Jet To ‘Self-Release’ New Album

After stints with Atlantic and Elektra, Jet will got it alone for album number three … sorta.

The Melbourne four-piece will release Shaka Rock on their newly created Real Horrorshow Records locally on August 21, but that doesn’t mean they’re licking stamps, concocting viral marketing strategies, pestering the media or doing whatever it is major labels do themselves. The album will be released through Five Seven Music – an imprint founded by the band’s manager Allen Kovac – with worldwide distribution through EMI, who helped Jet break into the US market in 2003.

Jet will now receive support from EMI’s promotion, merchandising, digital and physical distribution, licensing, synchronisation and brand partnerships teams. Still, singer Chris Cester maintains that – for the first time in their career – the band are in complete control.

“I can say that the band are thrilled with Shaka Rock in every conceivable way, and excited to know that we are 100 percent in control of every element of our career at this point with the new set-up.”

what an extraordinarily fine post, mother and father

I award Mother and Father the post of the day.

Very droll, Humphrey.

Ditto  said about 1 year ago:

self-release = dropped! Someone at label told me they spent over a million dollars on the album and it sounds like crap, so they got dropped...

monkeyman  said about 1 year ago:

A million dollars? Who produced it? Where was it recorded?

beercan  said about 1 year ago:

I heard the same. They recorded the album in Texas and spent over a million bucks. Atlantic rejected it and tried to get them to go and write new songs. Jet refused so they were dropped. Judging by the singles so far, I think Atlantic made a wise move.

neopleuromasterdon  said about 1 year ago:

how the hell can one spend 1 million on a an album? can anyone have a wild stab at a cost breakdown?

Fielding Mellish  said about 1 year ago:

I like the new video. The werewolf one.

Ditto  said about 1 year ago:

hey Black Wasp, does Chris have a mangina?

timewaster  said about 1 year ago:

A million dollars spent on Jet's new album?

That's $200 000 on recording, $800 000 on the powdery white stuff disappearing up Chris' nose. Easy.

Gee, the music 'industry' is amazing. Think about it. Five years ago, Jet were supposed to be the biggest thing ever. Who would have predicted that The Presets or Cut Copy would be way more popular than Jet?

Who would have predicted that Bliss n' Eso or Hilltop Hoods would be headlining bigger venues than Jet?

loveparade  said about 1 year ago:

five years is a long time in music. think about the differences between any five year gap in the history of popular music. jet absolutely bloew up in their hey-day. but music trends come and go...i'm sure they aren't the least bit bitter about the fact that sounding like the faces isn't the in-thing at the moment.

loveparade  said about 1 year ago:

and another thing-a jet thread that has been on mess and noise for almost a month only has 40 comments???!?!?!?!

why, back in my day.....

nic.rulz  said about 1 year ago:

WHAT, NOBODY TOLD ME JET SOUND LIKE THE FACES!!! (*runs out of house to buy all their albums)

JonBonJovial  said about 1 year ago:

Since when is Chris Cester the singer? Isn't he just the one that gets into fights with Lily Allen?

timewaster  said about 1 year ago:

Why are Jet advertising their gig on Mess and Noise? Surely this is the wrong place for that (unless they are trying to inspire a 200 post thread of vitriol)

annehelena  said about 1 year ago:

I'm QCing ''She's A Genius'' right now.

Sounds like a Jet song.

anonymous  said about 1 year ago:

The result is their most diverse effort yet. There are two excellent ballads, a couple of rock-radio-friendly mid-tempo tracks, a lyrically dexterous beatsmith track featuring a half-spoken, half-rapped bridge, a pedal steel-based lament written by Muncey, and the first track in the band’s history for which all members receive a writing credit. This time, too, the introspection comes from Chris contemplating life’s changes from age 17 to 27.

Yeah that is a fair point.

annehelena  said about 1 year ago:

While cataloguing Shaka Rock just now, I had a peek at the full band photo inside the sleeve.

How did the fat one become the hot one? And like, really hot, too.

annehelena  said about 1 year ago:

Yes yes; I know the answer's coke.

andydepressant  said about 1 year ago:

I saw them do She's a genius on Letterman last night. Chorus does what a chorus is supposed to do etc. What seemed weird was the guitarist that doesn't sing - I won't call him a lead guitarist - looked kinda frozen on stage. It honesty looked like either he was frightened stiff or that he was concentrating real hard to play the uber simple riff and progression he had been relegated. Either that or he has starved himself so thin that he was about to feint. ROCK.

andydepressant  said about 1 year ago:

I assumed that was a different guy?

annehelena  said about 1 year ago:

Nope, same guy.

gabbo  said about 1 year ago:

that's muncey, right?

annehelena  said about 1 year ago:

Nah, Wilson.

Rod of Justice  said about 1 year ago:

I self release on albums all the time and nobody writes a press release about me!

Ditto  said about 1 year ago:

self released = dropped by their record label!

andydepressant  said about 1 year ago:

From the one song I've heard I can't understand how a label would put out the first two then balk at this one. They all sound like Jet - derivative, catchy and simple.
