‘White Album’ Tour Expands
News posted Friday, May 29 2009 at 12:00 AM.
Related: You Am I, Josh Pyke, Chris Cheney, Phil Jamieson.
Despite the $100+ price tag and the appearance of Grinspoon’s Phil Jamieson, initial response to the The White Album tour has been so positive organisers have had to add more dates.
The tour – which will see Jamieson, Josh Pyke, Tim Rogers and Chris Cheney perform The Beatles’ untitled 1968 epic (colloquially known as The White Album) in full – will now expand to Adelaide and Perth. A third Sydney show has also been announced.
The White Album songs will be performed in track order, starting with ‘Back in the USSR’ and closing with ‘Good Night’. The quartet of Rogers, Cheney, Pyke and Jamieson will be backed by a 17-piece band that may or may not (but probably will) include Davey Lane.

Mmm, dates.
Road trip anyone? Let's follow this shit RIGHT AROUND.
We should witness among Perthlings.
this is perhaps the stupidest idea i've ever heard.
i wonder how they'll tackle revolution 9.
I am going to start a rumour that the Perth show will feature Tex Perkins.
and james baker as uncle ernie
and renee geyer as the acid queen
FIDDLE ABOUT.
Who shall play the flugelhorn?
jane rutter
apparently they're not going to.
scaredy cats.
that's LAME
they should do it acoustically
well, you know...
heh, fair point
that's LAMER
or possibly EVEN MORE LAME
fucken language
Then it's not the fucking White Album.
LAMERER
INNIT
Will they subsequently cover Ciccone Youth's Whitey Album? I'd like to hear Tim Rogers covering Kim Gordon covering Robert Palmer.
Semi-indie turducken.
hmmm. Tim the songwriter is not Tim the singer. I don' really understand the choice of musican's; fame over appropriate vocal sound but not surprising considering the idea=cash.
LAAAAAAAAAAAAME
they'll do that boring good night one though, forsure. wimps.
what the FUCK is up with that banner ad?
is MLK on it to remind us of Helter Skelter?
If Def FX and Phish could cover Revolution 9 you would think this buncha cunce could.
jesus, akward much?
i know that pic of jet is meant to be a joke, but i think jet could definitely do this album way better than these four..
The real 'white' on this tour will be getting snorted up Phil Jamieson's nose. He's starting to look all drug-puffy.
it's the botox.
Get this shit the fuck outta here.
So did anyone go to this Saturday night?
Anyone goin' tonight?
I'm seeing it tomorrow night.....
Been kinda indifferent about it until now.... I'm lookin' forward to it all of a sudden!
id be very interested to hear how it goes.
I'll report back tomorrow night....
rogers excellent, cheney and jamieson good, pyke shocking.
highlights were rogers' happiness is a warm gun and me and my monkey, cheney's helter skelter, encore all-in hey bulldog.
lowlights were pyke's ruination of blackbird and mother nature's son.
Did they at least play a recording of revolution 9 in the appropriate spot?
I went along more out of curiosity than anything else but thoroughly enjoyed it!....
...for what sounded like a possible musical car crash on paper was wonderfully delivered. The performances were fun and the band, horn section and orchestra nailed the album perfectly... maybe too perfect, as there was no playful reworkings of songs, it was a note for note recreation, stunningly so - right down to every little nuance - they didn't miss a thing.
Timmy was the highlight - thankfully in fine vocal form (always a relief!) and delivered all his songs (except Revolution) without a guitar, which freed him up to be a more loose n' playful frontman - and of course, he won over the audience just with sheer force of his personality n' rogers charm - dancing, high kicks, just loving it himself and it showed.
The album was played in exact running order from the start to finish. I was kinda hoping someone would have a go at Revolution 9, but they just played a snippet of it before concluding with the final song.
Okay, here's who sang what....
Back In The USSR - Cheney
Dear Prudence - Jamieson
Glass Onion - Cheney
Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da - Pyke (joined by everybody)
Wild Honey Pie - Rogers
The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill - Rogers
While My Guitar Gently Weeps - Cheney
Happiness Is A Warm Gun - Rogers
Martha My Dear - Pyke
I'm So Tired - Jamieson
Blackbird - Pyke
Piggies - Rogers
Rocky Raccoon - Rogers & Pyke
Don't Pass Me By - Jamieson
Why Don't We Do It In The Road? - Cheney
I Will - Jamieson
Julia - Pyke
Birthday - Cheney
Yer Blues - Jamieson
Mother Nature's Son - Pyke
Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except Me and My Monkey - Rogers
Sexy Sadie - Jamieson
Long, Long, Long - Pyke
Revolution 1 - Rogers
Honey Pie - Jamieson
Savoy Truffle - Cheney
Cry Baby Cry - Pyke
Revolution 9 - (nobody sang it - was just played over the PA for a bit...)
Good Night - Rogers
...wow, can't believe I remembered that!
Highlights were unexpected... Tim covering Piggies worked really well, who knew that song would stand up live?! And Tim concluding with Goodnight was beautiful, complete with the string section it was stunning. He also delivered some fine rock moments with Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except Me and My Monkey and Happiness Is A Warm Gun.... and had great fun with Bungalow Bill, really hamming it up. '
The group performance of Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da, rather than be groan worthy, was an absolute success - the audience loved it/
Cheney played an awesome version of Helter Skelter, and a stunning version of While My Guitar Gently Weeps - of course, showing off his impressive guitar chops - but impressing me most with his vocals, free from The Living End he sounded relaxed and great.
A big surprise was Phil Jamieson, he sang really well and nailed his songs - especially Dear Prudence, I'm So Tired and Sexy Sadie. And he performed well too, enjoying himself and bringing the audience along with him... hey maybe there is life after Grinspoon after all?
I don't agree that Josh Pyke was shocking, he was left mainly to acoustic numbers - and I thought he did a fine job vocally. I really loved his versions of Long, Long, Long and Cry Baby Cry... and I thought he sang Blackbird perfectly (hey it even had Blackbird chirping noises just like on the LP!)...
Having exhausted the entire White Album, the encore consisted of a group performance of Revolution - but this time the rocking single version (Rogers had sung the acoustic LP version earlier) - then a reprise of Why Don't We Do It In The Road? sung by all - and finally a stunning group performance of Hey Bulldog (the only non White Album song of the night... but hey, like the White Album, Hey Bulldog was released in 1968 too so was kinda fitting).
So overall, a huge success!
so anyone else go?
Someone from my work went. I'll ask a bit later. She might still be cross that I said there was absolutely no point in anyone covering the Beatles and anyone who went to this was an idiot.
i too, had huge reservations 'bout this gig but ended up lovin' it
was great hearing songs i've listened to too all my life but never heard live... it was like a White Album ATP gig
I had front row on Saturday night. Hugely overpriced but awesome show.
nice goin'.... i was was in the fourth row from the front last night
yeah, considering how pricey it was i couldn't believe last night (the last of 3 shows) was sold out. man, if you build it... people really do show up eh?
does anyone know why they had 2 drummers at this gig?.... playing at the same time no less!
couldn't really see why.... looked like they were playing the same thing! two full identical drum kits being played simultaneously.... was odd!
Because Ringo's so good they needed two drumemrs to even slightly replicate him?
reading the review it certainly was a point of expansion for all involved.
What, no thread on the follow up tour
i'm surprised, especially with such a star studded cast!
4 shows at the opera house!
