MOR rockers Birds of Tokyo were the big winners at this year’s WAMi Awards, which were announced last night (May 7) at a ceremony in Perth.
The quartet were nominated for five awards, winning them all including Most Popular Act, Most Popular Album, Most Popular Live Act and the industry voted awards for Best Rock Act and Best Male Vocalist (Ian Kenny).
Despite notching up 10 nominations, psych-pop wunderkinds Tame Impala only landed three: Most Popular Single/EP, Favourite Newcomer and Most Promising New Act beating out Apricot Rail, Boys Boys Boys! and the Scotch of St James.
In the publicly voted award categories, M+N sister site Faster Louder won their first WAMi for Most Popular Music Website and popular Fremantle hangout the Fly By Night Musicians Club scored the gong for Most Popular Music Venue. The WAMi for Most Popular Music Video went to Downsyde for their single ‘Fortune and Fame’ and the folks at Sunset Events took home the award for Most Popular Music Event for their festival, Southbound.
Hosted by rock icon Tex Perkins, the evening saw performances by WA artists including The Typhoons and local favourites The Kill Devil Hills (pictured above).
