Splendour Round One

Festival ever-presents The Midnight Juggernauts, folk-pop veterans Augie March and grunge wash-ups Grinspoon are some of the big-name Australian acts confirmed for this year’s Splendour In The Grass festival. They will join Jane’s Addiction, The Flaming Lips, Bloc Party, The Specials and Meredith disappointments MGMT at Byron Bay’s Belongil Fields over the final weekend in July.

Other Australian acts confirmed include Sarah Blasko, Josh Pyke, Little Birdy, Bob Evans, Kram, Yves Klein Blue, Decoder Ring, Lost Valentinos, Jack Ladder and Spunk Singles Club alumni Leader Cheetah and The Middle East.

All this for a measly $240 plus booking fee (add $132 if you’re planning on camping). But hey, Dave Navarro’s rider doesn’t come cheap. Tickets go on sale at www.qjump.com.au from 9am on May 14.

They do know we're in the middle of a recession right? This is kind of ridiculous.

Temet  said about 2 years ago:

I dislike Grinspoon as much as the next chat, but can we keep the commentary out of news articles? It's getting a bit tired.

shaun  said about 2 years ago:

there's a comments section for a reason, Temet.

jimmy hutspah  said about 2 years ago:

worst. line. up. ever.

Rufus  said about 2 years ago:

why does commentary have to be kept out of news articles?

i don't understand

Ohyeah  said about 2 years ago:

there shouldn't be a comment box then.

kuroneko  said about 2 years ago:

I think Temet means comments within the actual article.

shaun  said about 2 years ago:

haha, right

Rufus  said about 2 years ago:

oh so he does...

i didn't read the article!

Shademan  said about 2 years ago:

$372 plus travel, plus, food & plus booze.... Who are they kidding! ... AND GRINSPOON! thats just insulting.

big rumour is Animal Collective for it

CaptainFez  said about 2 years ago:

But it's EDGY to be critical, innit?

Temet  said about 2 years ago:

Yes, I meant comments as in opinion.

I like M&N's cross between wit and snarkiness, but as pointed out by several others it's turning up in a lot more news posts and isn't really necessary.

Ohyeah  said about 2 years ago:

or were they merely being factual?

CaptainFez  said about 2 years ago:

By stating an opinion? Hmmmm.

Ohyeah  said about 2 years ago:

well if the crowd was disappointed in MGMT, then that is a fact, not an opinion.

jimmy hutspah  said about 2 years ago:

Grinspoon are washed up, he's right, it is a fact.

CaptainFez  said about 2 years ago:

Uniformly? Each and every one? Categorically?

Ohyeah  said about 2 years ago:

yep. mainly becuase generalisations rock.

shaun  said about 2 years ago:

can't you guys just face it that Grinspoon suck, as do MGMT, and most of us feel a little better having these facts reinforced by M+N?

Ohyeah  said about 2 years ago:

i prefer a bit of moxy in reviews, so happy with comments, bitchy or otherwise. we are forgetting the most important fact outlined in the above news item. the original line up of janes addiction is touring.

bungle  said about 2 years ago:

M+N just snarkily and subjectively commented on this thread on twitter!

CaptainFez  said about 2 years ago:

Wow, how meta.

pumpkin  said about 2 years ago:

how much did it cost last year?

tihstar  said about 2 years ago:

That's pretty insane for a two day festival with that sort of lineup.

timewaster  said about 2 years ago:

$240

Is that a joke?

Is it because Bloc Party and MGMT are playing exclusively at Splendour?

fucking hell.

By the way, I saw MGMT last time and I thought they were good.

HEB  said about 2 years ago:

V is two days and costs more tha AUD$240...

Coz  said about 2 years ago:

Out of the three main headliners, I've seen two within the last year and will be seeing the other in a couple of months time. So I don't think I'd be tempted to head to Byron for that price.

I thought the strength of the Splendour lineup is usually that they bring out awesome bands who haven't toured in aaages? Or maybe my memory is failing.

steveholt  said about 2 years ago:

They know it will sell out so don't really have to put too much effort into the line-up.

But that is a fucking joke.

Orange Julius  said about 2 years ago:

I swear to god YYYs will be added to the bill. I wouldn't be surprised if Animal Collective show up either.

King_Rat  said about 2 years ago:

Splendour in my ass

intruder  said about 2 years ago:

Taking advantage of recently economically stimulated festival lovers i'm guessing. $240 is do-able when you've just been given $900.

timewaster  said about 2 years ago:

YYY will not be added to the bill. Look at their tour dates. They're busy in July.

lowercase  said about 2 years ago:

How so? A gig in Ireland on July 11 and noting else until New Jersey on the 31st?
I reckon they can get to Byron in 20 days. In fact - I reckon they can play every city in Oz as well.

Crazy facts I know.

They've got 3 haven't they - the flaming lips, jane's addiction and the specials.. how many do you need?

and crap aussie bands play every aussie festival, i dont' know how you can all be so shocked..

Coz  said about 2 years ago:

Okay, maybe I should have said ''bring out exclusively for the festival'', which is what I meant.

blake3030  said about 2 years ago:

I heard they were playing one of the Japanese fests on exactly the same dates and were no chance.

Plus, judging by this and the past few line-ups... Splendour wouldn't have been that smart.

blake3030  said about 2 years ago:

I didn't see them, but I haven't seen one positive comment out of many through various forums on the net over all of their shows. Not jsut on their Australian tour too. The general consensus seems to be that they didn't live up to the hype in a live setting. I think it's pretty safe to add that in there.
