ECSR Makes Christgau’s Grade

The self-anointed dean of American rock crits Robert Christgau has given Eddy Current high praise in his influential Consumer Guide.

Writing on MSN Music – the column’s new home after more than 35 years at the Village Voice – Christgau gave the band’s second LP Primary Colours a commendable “A minus”.

“Three-plus decades after the initial dispensation, one more punk band out of the blue (Melbourne, but it could be anywhere in the English-speaking world) does the same thing punk bands have always done, only not exactly,” wrote Christgau. “Some are no longer susceptible to this recurrent miracle [punk]. Too bad for them.”

A master of the short-form review and one of America’s foremost critical voices, Christgau spent 37 years as music editor for The Village Voice before he was fired reportedly “for taste”. He became a contributing editor at Rolling Stone and later took up the position of co-chief music critic at Blender.

I've heard Christgau described as the 'self-anointed dean' of music critics so many times I kinda feel sorry for him. He's great. I think we, the people, should anoint him in an arms-length, sacramental anointing ceremony. We'll wear robes.

JRB  said about 10 months ago:

I've got books of Christgau's consumer guides that I used to read on the train. He's usually pretty much on the money and even when he's not he gives you a good idea of what he liked/hated about a particularly awesome/shit album.

I thought Thurston Moore killed Christgau with his Big Fucking Dick

Rufus  said about 10 months ago:

he's not always on the money tho

he did give Moby's Play (1999) an A+ back in the day

i bet he regrets that now

JRB  said about 10 months ago:

You know, Play isn't actually that bad a record.

Fuck, I've lost all credibility now, haven't I?

Rufus  said about 10 months ago:

well, it's catchy

but not A+

Get a new photo already!

i think they're smart to avoid band photos wherever possible. it's next to impossible not to look like a douchebag in a band photo.

crimpies  said about 10 months ago:

Good call Rigid. Wasn't really aimed at the band though, more at M+N for using the same ONE again and again.

Pretty sure one time I saw another photo of ECSR! (It's not like they're Robert Johnson...)

Personally I like this one:

dixiegrrl  said about 10 months ago:

wow, that really is a killer pic!

actually, I thought Tim Warren killed Christgau.. or at least three weeks after he stuck that voodoo drawing in this thing up in his ceiling, Christgau got canned from the Village Voice... after what, 20 something years or more?

rigid  said about 10 months ago:

i think rigid just answered the reason why we do this here:
