Oh Mercy!

Another day, another Mercy Arms quit rumour. This time from the website of Loog Records, the influential UK indie founded by former NME editor James Oldham.

“We've been talking about the Mercy Arms for years on this site and we were all set to release their brilliant debut single next month. Unfortunately, just as we were about to press it up, they split ... nightmare!

“We don't have any more details yet, just that singer Thom Moore has sent us a handful of excellent solo demos and that he's determined to move over to the UK as soon as possible.”

The Loog announcement comes a month after manager Todd Wagstaff rubbished claims that the band had broken up. “[The past few months have seen] the usual dramas and the guys playing in lots of other projects,” he told M+N, “but Mercy Arms will continue when it’s ready”.

Will they? Won’t they? It’s all becoming a bit of a soap opera, really. Next week: Mercy Arms reform for a one-off show on the Apple Buildings rooftop.

Loog dropped the Duke Spirit too. And don't mention The Hiss or The Open.

Most of their bands get dropped or fall apart.

Hopefully The Horrors will be the exception.

elle-zo  said about 11 months ago:

except The Horrors are now on XL Recordings, so they got dropped by Loog already.

bummer, seeing as The Horrors suddenly appear to be rather good.

Problem with Loog is that they only see one way of promoting a band - via NME of course.

bit shortsighted I would think

So did their manager Todd Wagstaff tell a wee porky the other day or did he just not know what was going on within the band?

timewaster  said about 11 months ago:

BOTH.

i think it's a bit generous to call Loog an influential indie.
they're followers not leaders, and I thought they were funded by Universal but that may not be the case now

I heard that James Oldham is now a bigshot A & Rsehole for Polydor...

Their best band was The Duke Spirit. The Witnesses are cool too.

But Loog is often the kiss of death. Guaranteed love from the NME just ain't the magic bullet that it used to be....

yeah i think Tod told a wee porky.
