Mercy Arms Split?

Well, according to their collaboratively edited Wikipedia page they have:

“Mercy Arms broke up in February 2009 after touring with the Big Day Out for the second time in two years. This is mainly credited to [Kirin J. Callinan] and [Thom] Moore's creative differences. Side projects include Fashion Launchers Rocket Launchers, The Nevada Strange and Kirin J. Callinan.”

If the rumours are true, it brings to a close an eventful four years for the Sydney quartet of Thom Moore (vocals/guitar), Kirin J. Callinan (guitar), Ash Moss (bass) and Julian Sudek (drums). Formed in 2005, the band were subject to a bidding war before signing with Capitol Records in 2006. The deal was shortlived, however, and the band were one of the casualties of Capitol’s restructure in 2007.

The band signed to Levi’s offshoot Levity later that year, releasing their Kept Low EP. In August 2008, they released their debut self-titled LP independently.

shame if true. their debut was a corker, and best song ''quit your fooling'' will remain unreleased, i guess.

Well, that ruined my Monday morning.

goldbuttons  said about 1 year ago:

Saw Fashion Launches Rocket Launches the other night and they were really good, so that's something at least.

mathieson  said about 1 year ago:

Damn. Well at least their album is a keeper.

moke  said about 1 year ago:

That's rubbish, but not really a surprise. At least Kirin's still out and about doing stuff. His gig a few weeks ago at the Mercat Basement was astounding.

That Thom bloke has the herp, just in case any of you were prepared to have him ream you cleanly in the buttocks

MichaelDudikoff  said about 1 year ago:

Quit your fooling is on the Half Right single, isn't it ?

timewaster  said about 1 year ago:

It's true. It's a shame.

Come see Fashion Lanches Rocket Launches.

MichaelDudikoff  said about 1 year ago:

Who is in that, TW ? The Myspace is particularly uninformative.

ffarff, esq  said about 1 year ago:

They were one of my favourite Australian bands, but i found out their side projects kirins solo stuff and The Nevada Strange are way more exciting. So im happy and sad at the same time.

kazpatafta  said about 1 year ago:

This pleases me if true. Kirin solo is awesome, hope he releases something at some point. (incidentally, I told Lindy Morrison the other week about his cover of Apology Accepted and she seemed pretty chuffed, I wanna show it to her!). Plus all my pals that have seen FLRL say they're fantastic too, I gotta see 'em next time.

Have Nevada Strange broken up too?

timewaster  said about 1 year ago:

Fashion Lanches Rocket Launches is Kirin and Jules from Mercy Arms, plus Jono from Valentinos and Dan Stricker from Midnight Juggernauts.

Kirin's also doing his solo gigs...he's doing some upcoming gigs with Mission Control and The Process. I guess the Nevada Strange are playing gigs, doing their Birthday Partyish noise thing.

Mercy Arms could have been massive. I mean, MASSIVE. They had the sound, the songs, the stage presence, the buzz, everything. A & Rseholes were flying en masse from the US and UK to see them. The buzz was that they were the next Coldplay. If Capitol had put them in a studio with a bigshot producer like Eno or Lanois, they would have made that kind of 'crossover' record.

OK, it's not gonna be on the nightly news. But it's a real shame they broke up. The two guitarists couldn't get along. Just too much, too soon...

Incidentally, the Slam Volume One skateboarding DVD features two Mercy Arms tracks. They're the only good songs on the soundtrack.

MichaelDudikoff  said about 1 year ago:

Interesting. Thanks.

It's fucked they broke up, they were a great band.

timewaster  said about 1 year ago:

They recently had an offer from Loog on the table in the UK. They had unreleased tracks produced by Dave Sitek from TVOTR, and they still broke up. What a shame...

quinton  said about 1 year ago:

They were shit! Slowly all the fashion bands are disappearing!

Lets get some good bands back in the limelight in oz

timewaster  said about 1 year ago:

Ha ha ha...did actually you listen to them? They looked fashionable, but they weren't a 'fashion' band. They wrote great songs.

celluloid hero  said about 1 year ago:

people liked these guys??

quinton  said about 1 year ago:

Yeah some of the tracks have an ambient pyshc feel that i dig - however my little 13 year brother as a synth and garage band...big woop

However you go and do remixes with acts such as Cut Copy and your
already watering down your band.

Trying to use other acts to propell themselves forward without first earning
respect from fans and the music public

Does anyone remember a band called dukes of windsor...... tv rock?

Lol

I just feel that the bands these days want instant sucess and will sell their souls to be famous...... and music listeners and lovers are not stupid and have stop buying music....in all forms

they may look the part, get a root after the show but they are shhit

Whose turn is it to buy the popcorn?

timewaster  said about 1 year ago:

That's bullshit. Dan from Cutters offered to do their remix. Mercy Arms didn't get the Cut Copy remix as a publicity stunt. Hoey played guitar for Mercy Arms on tour in Europe, because he digs the band. Besides, the Cutters remix wasn't even on the album.

I haven't had Kettle Chips for a while. Ta, Frankie.

spaceman1  said about 1 year ago:

shit news. really liked this band and was hoping to catch them again soon. last melbourne club gig was a bit flat. awesome debut album which was criminally ignored.

sparky  said about 1 year ago:

it's no surprise. they've been talking about breaking up for ages.

MichaelDudikoff  said about 1 year ago:

I've been killing the EP all day after a long break. Such a fucking waste.

There's more ideas on that EP (both successful and unsuccessful) than most bands can come up with in career.

Shot. Right. Down.
