Eddy Win An AMP

Eddy Current Suppression Ring have won this year’s $30,000 Australian Music Prize (AMP).

The band, who were nominated for their second album Primary Colours, beat out a strong field that included The Presets, Beaches, inaugural AMP winners The Drones, Cut Copy, C.W Stoneking, Jack Ladder, Tom Cooney and Ross McLennan. They were presented with the award at a gala ceremony in Sydney today (March 20).

Jack Ladder won the Red Bull Award In Recognition Of Outstanding Potential, a $15,000 cash prize awarded this year for the first time, for his album Love Is Gone.

Speaking to M+N before the announcement, ECSR's Mikey Young said the band planned to spend the cash on either a trip to Hawaii, cheap tailored suits in Bali or a studio space for practice and recording themselves and other bands. Let's hope it's the latter.

Established in 2005, the AMP is selected by a 23-strong judging panel that includes members of the media, musicians and retailers. Past winners include the aforementioned Drones, as well as Augie March (2006) and the Mess Hall (2007).

Shtick, image, look...whatever.... I'm talking about the judges' perception of ECSR. I know that ESCR don't have a 'marketing strategy' and the guys aren't being moulded into anything fake. I like their band.

FrankieTeardrop  said about 2 years ago:

I still don't get it. ECSR are the most uncharismatic band ever. I don't see how they can be tagged with having a ''look''. Three quarters of the band you wouldn't recognise if they served you at the K-Mart checkouts. Their music is terminally uncool. What 18 year old hipster remembers all of The Kinks' non-hits?

kuroneko  said about 2 years ago:

Aw, come on Frankie. Timewaster's an industry insider. He knows how it all works, man. He's met Pav and everything!

rigid  said about 2 years ago:

i like how timewaster presents opinions as facts. how can cut copy have made the best record of the year when it's totally unlistenable?

kuroneko  said about 2 years ago:

Shouldn't you be on a plane to Hawaii about now, rigid?

celluloid hero  said about 2 years ago:

my post was to enimsay

timewaster  said about 2 years ago:

I don't think that Cut Copy made the best record of the year. I just think it was the best record from the nominated shortlist.

ESCR do not have a 'look'. But that IS their 'look'.

Y'know what I mean? Every popular band has an image, intentionally or not. ESCR look like totally regular guys that you would meet at the pub. That's their image, although it's unintended. And obviously the critics like it, because it's so Aussie and unpretentious.

rigid  said about 2 years ago:

i know what you mean. it's also true that no matter how sick and tired you get of people creating images and talking about images and you really just want to put all that to the side and be in a band with no image and play music, the first thing image obsessed people do is turn around and say, ''nice image, people like that image.'' it's like the thief who doesn't trust anyone.

timewaster  said about 2 years ago:

I'm not obsessed with image. Have you met me? I look like a cross between Laurie Oakes and a dead beached whale.

I respect bands who don't intentionally craft their image, like Evermore, Jet or The Galvatrons.

rigid  said about 2 years ago:

it wasn't necessarily aimed at you, it's a universal truth.

but we've met, so it could've been aimed at you.

i'd like to see that cruising around on a skateboard

eastside  said about 2 years ago:

contrived or not ECSR do have an ''image'' ..... the lead singer's Peter Garrett moves in his Michael Jackson gloves

anyways well done to the band, i hope the $30k goes a long way

timewaster  said about 2 years ago:

OK, I'm exaggerating. I'm not fat. I look like a cross between the Pauline Hanson lookalike's arse and a plate of dog food.

timewaster  said about 2 years ago:

So I have met 'Rigid'. Hmmmm.....I'm thinking about all the people who hate me, wondering who you might be...

eastside  said about 2 years ago:

i don't think rigid would even be bothered to hate you, he has plenty of more pressing concerns..... but if forced i'd take an educated guess that he met you in your previous musical guise

rigid  said about 2 years ago:

hey man i don't hate anyone. i saw your old band play once and yet i gave your new band it's first gig ever. for that, i apologise to the australian public.

rigid  said about 2 years ago:

(at least i think that's the case. i could be wrong.)

timewaster  said about 2 years ago:

Ahhhh, I know!

I probably met RIgid when I was touring with the Injectors. Those were the days... the fame, the appearances on 'Hey Hey', the time that I bumjacked Jennifer Keyte and she had to discretely visit the hospital.

Then I decided to use my real name, Mark Lizotte. But the fans never came! So it's back to Diesel for me. Good thing that Gudinski has stuck with me, even though my hair hasn't....
