Sydney’s ‘British’ Invasion

The Big British Sound, an annual series of shows, parties and mini-festivals started by clothing brand Ben Sherman in the UK, is making its way to Sydney. So at least you’d think they’d change the name? Nah ah. But at least they’d get some vaguely British-sounding bands on the bill? Negatory.
Save for The Cream-inspired Tame Impala, there’s nothing ostensibly ‘British’ about this bill: Little Red take their cues from American ’50s greasers; ART vs SCIENCE list French electro acts Justice and Daft Punk as influences; The Seabellies recall bombastic Canadian popsters The Arcade Fire (they even have an accordion for God’s sake); and Jack Ladder, well, who knows, but his bio says he’s like “Leonard Cohen driving through Detroit singing along to Little Richard on the radio” ie. not very British at all.
Then again, our head of state is still QE2, so there’s an argument to say we’re all British.
Tickets: $18 plus booking fees.
