Another Drone On The Barbie?

Twelve Australian acts will showcase their wares to the world at the Aussie BBQ at South By Southwest (SxSW) in Austin on March 20.

The Drones, Youth Group, Gabriella Cilmi, The Grates, Birds of Tokyo, Josh Pyke, Temper Trap, My Disco, Infusion, The Fumes, The Boat People and Red Riders will perform at the event, held annually since 2003.

Run by Stage Mothers, a support service for Australian musicians attending overseas music conventions, the Aussie BBQ is fully catered with complimentary snags and booze. As a result, it’s been voted the number one “day party” at SxSW by industry, media and bloggers for the past three years.

Acts who have played the barbecue in the past include Paul Kelly, Hoodoo Gurus, Powderfinger, John Butler Trio, The Living End, You Am I and The Vines.

Running from midday-7.30pm, the invite-only event will be held in Brush Square Park (opposite the Austin Convention Centre) in downtown Austin, Texas.

Playing times:

12.15-12.40pm The Boat People
12.50-1.15pm Red Riders
1.25-1.50pm The Fumes
2.00-2.25pm Gabriella Cilmi
2.35-3.00pm Josh Pyke
3.10-3.35pm The Grates
3.50-4.15pm Temper Trap
4.30-4.55pm The Drones
5.05-5.30pm Youth Group
5.40-6.05pm My Disco

interesting article about this in the age today..

If you had a band 'to aussie BBQ or not to aussie BBQ.'

I would go the modular route and avoid it at all costs - Paul Kelly, Hoodoo Gurus, Powderfinger, John Butler Trio, The Living End, You Am I have hardly dominated overseas.

what's the point in playing to a bunch of ex-pats? apparently Andrew G was there too....eeek

Why on earth are the lovely Drones 'supporting' Birds of Tokyo? I'm going to see to it that some minion gets shot for such an outrageous decision.

SpiderCrab  said about 2 years ago:

I second that. F### Birds of Tokyo.

timewaster  said about 2 years ago:

The Drones are not supporting the horrendous Birds of Tokyo.

It's not a Birds of Tokyo headline gig. The Drones have a better time slot, because they are on in the afternoon and would have less competition from a hundred other 'name' bands.

It's okay Holly. Don't organise a protest of the Muso Mafia down Brunswick St.

Would just like to point out that JBT are actually pretty big OS... they do big shows both in the states and Euro, they are just not a headline band ala WM...

But yes, I agree with you. Unless you need to see some of your mates, Aussie BBQ is a waste of time.

The Living End are big overseas too. They play good-sized venues. Green Day's endorsement must help.

I think that SXSW isn't worth it in general. Too many bands in the same place, all at once.

I was sitting in a French pub when they decided to play a live John Butler set.

FUCK

The best fucking set you ever saw, where's SXSW my invite.

Oh really? Must have missed that gig.... ha ha!

Well now that the showcases have closed and the streets are swept, the bands that scored well on the music biz front--based on media coverage and industry friends) are Temper Trap, Boat People ( I saw them and liked them), Dappled Cities, the Grates again, Birds of Tokyo, The Fumes, Josh Pyke, An Horse, The Drones, Gabriella Cilmi and Kara Grainger. Even though not an official showcaser, Guy Sebastian surprised all with his delivery and his presence at this crucial event with his manager and Sony backing will pay off well.
