Lee Memorial Launch

From the ashes of Sodastream comes Lee Memorial, the new outfit from Karl Smith.

Named after a guesthouse in Kolkatta, where Smith used to holiday as a child (he lived in Bangladesh and India until he was 13), Lee Memorial is a supergroup of sorts featuring Laura MacFarlane (Sleater-Kinney, Ninety Nine), Tom Lyngcoln (Nation Blue), Steve Thomas (Zond), Matt Bailey (Paradise Motel) and Madeline Spawton, who “has no ragged pedigree … but plays clarinet and cello”.

The band will launch their first single, ‘Berlin’, at The Tote tonight (March 13) with Lakes and that other Melbourne supergroup St Helens. The track is the first taste of their debut album, The Lives Of Lee Memorial, which will be released on March 28 on Dot Dash.

Ha ha. Laura would hate Sleater Kinney being mentioned over Ninetynine, I reckon.

Just had an odd flashback to seeing Sleater Kinney play an in-store at Polyester Records with Laura playing drums in 1995 or thereabouts (round about the time they recorded their debut album with Nick Carrol in Nth Melbourne). There were about 8 people in attendance. Crazy!

Hmm. That Berlin song is pretty damn fine. It's like they've taken all the best elements of their regular bands and combined them to create some kind of uber-indie-pop.

I likes.
