Bushfire Benefit Bonanza

Australia’s music community has rallied around Victoria’s bushfire victims with a series of benefit gigs scheduled over the next few weeks.

At Melbourne’s Corner Hotel on March 1, bands including Rocket Science, X, Even, The Casanovas, The Gun Street Girls (the new outfit from Dallas Crane’s Dave Larkin), The Basics, The Pictures and Hot Little Hands will perform at a benefit gig hosted by Julia Zemiro from Rockwiz. All profits from ticket sales will go to the Salvation Army Victorian Bushfire Appeal with The Corner also donating a portion of bar takings (so drink up). Bands kick off at 6pm with a sausage sizzle upstairs. Tickets: $30 on the door/$20 for CFA members/$25 (plus booking fee) through the Corner’s website.

On the same day at Fitzroy’s Birmingham Hotel, a slew of local bands will help raise funds for the Australian Red Cross Victorian Bushfire Appeal. Bands playing include Pets With Pets, This City Sunrise, The Sharks, They Bite!, Zebras Can't Be Tigers, Pistons Misfire and Green Green Green. Festivities will run from 4pm-11pm and will include a veg-friendly barbecue. Entry: $10 on the door.

Over in Brisvegas on March 6, Powderfinger, The Grates, Robert Forster, The John Steel Singers, The Boat People and Dan Parsons will perform at
“Fire and Flood” at the Tivoli. All proceeds raised will be donated to the Red Cross appeal, as well as the Premier’s Flood Disaster Relief Appeal in response to the recent Queensland floods. Tickets, which are $60 plus booking fees (what’s with the booking fees for benefit gigs?), go on sale on February 27 from Ticketek.

And finally, the big one: two stadium benefit shows scheduled to run simultaneously at the MCG and SCG on March 14. Rival promoters Michael Gudinski and Michael Chugg have joined forces for “Sound Relief”, which will raise funds for victims of the Victorian bushfires and the Queensland floods. In Melbourne, Midnight Oil, Split Enz, Augie March, Hunters & Collectors and Paul Kelly are some of the big Australian acts confirmed. In Sydney, Icehouse, Hoodoo Gurus, Eskimo Joe, Josh Pyke, The Presets and You Am I will perform. Jet and Wolfmother are somehow performing at both gigs.

Tickets are $75 (plus booking fees, of course) and will go on sale from Ticketek on March 4. All of the profits from the Melbourne concert will be donated to the Red Cross bushfire appeal, while Sydney will see a split between the Red Cross and the Premier's Disaster Relief Fund Appeal in QLD.
