AMP Shortlist Announced

The shortlist for the Australian Music Prize (AMP) was announced at The St Kilda Festival on Sunday evening. And there were some surprise inclusions – and a couple glaring omissions – among the nine nominees.

Cut Copy, however, wasn’t one of them. Their nod for In Ghost Colours, their acclaimed sophomore release, was announced early to drum up a bit of PR for the shortlist. Other expected selections included The Presets for their ARIA Award-winning Apocalypso, Eddy Current Suppression Ring for Primary Colours, Beaches for their self-titled debut and The Drones for Havilah. The latter three featured in the top five of M+N’s 2008 critics poll.

There was no love, however, for critics poll winner Snowman, art-punk minimalists My Disco or Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds, whose Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!! topped several end-of-year lists. CW Stoneking’s Jungle Blues, Jack Ladder’s Love Is Gone, Ross McLennan’s Sympathy For the New World and Presque Vu by Tom Cooney rounded out the list.

Cooney’s nod was perhaps the most surprising. The Brisbane singer-songwriter’s debut was released to little fanfare in October last year. You can read our review of it here.

The nominees were selected by a 23-strong judging panel that includes members of the media, musicians and retailers. The winner of the AMP’s $30,000 cash prize will be announced on March 13.

The Amp is unique in Australia – a critically judged award which honours contemporary Australian artists based on their creative excellence.

From their website. Explains why Mr. Cave didn't make the list.
