Espy Celebrates 130 Years

In 1878, you’d be hard-pressed to catch a grindcore, twee-pop or thrash show in Melbourne, but you could grab a beer at St Kilda’s The Esplanade Hotel.

The iconic pub will celebrate 130 years this weekend with an impressive line-up of bands performing over two days. On Saturday night (November 29), The Drones, Rocket Science, Sand Pebbles and Lady Strangelove will grace the refurbished Gershwin Room stage, while Sunday is a more low-key affair with acts including soul diva Renee Geyer, pop oddity Kate Miller-Heidke and Triple J outcasts The Basics performing for free in the front bar.

Still, if you had any doubts about the historical significance of the place, consider this: a year before The Espy was founded, Melbourne didn’t even have a name.
