Liddiard To Crits: ‘Do Something Useful’

Despite nearly a decade of slobbering reviews, The Drones’ Gareth Liddiard still doesn’t think much of the humble rock critic.

In the first issue of new literary journal ampersand, Liddiard fired off some Axl Rose-style barbs at music writers, describing them as “mild-mannered primary school teachers trying to control their bitchy little charges”.

“Blogging has cut the balls off music criticism,” he wrote in a piece titled, “Oxford Men’s Colleges Entrance Exam Questions 1957-1967 As Answered By Contemporary Musicians”.

“But even when critics are being cool it's still weird. Rock’n’roll is pretty retarded and writing about it is really scraping the literary barrel. Why would you bother? Do something useful for fuck's sake.”

What? Like dance to architecture?

Perhaps Liddiard was still miffed about this.
