Eddy Current: ARIA Nod 'Hilarious'

If there were any doubts about Eddy Current Suppression Ring’s ability to crack the mainstream, they dissipated with an ARIA nomination on Wednesday (September 10).

But the Melbourne art-garage four-piece will have to beat out stiff competition to land their first ARIA award. They’re up against Faker, Gyroscope, Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds and The Living End in the best rock album category.

Speaking to Mess+Noise on Wednesday, guitarist Mikey Young said the nomination was something “cool” to tell his parents.

“I care a bit I guess. It's nice but mainly hilarious for some reason,” he said. “I don't rate our chances really and don't think I can justify the ticket price to go. It would be damn funny though. Or boring as all hell -- I'm not sure. All in all, it made me smile so that's good.”

Eddy Current were among an eclectic bunch of first-time nominees including other Mess+Noise favourites the Midnight Juggernauts (best breakthrough artist) and the Panics, strangely, for best adult contemporary album.

Other nominees include the Presets, Cut Copy, British India, Operator Please and Robert Forster. Sixteen-year-old singer Gabriella Cilmi received the most nods (six), with nominations to Delta, John Butler Trio and Silverchair – none of whom released an album this year –maintaining the status quo.

The awards will be held on October 19 at Acer Arena, Sydney Olympic Park.
