The Mess Hall have been announced as the surprise winners of this years Australian Music Prize, beating a strong field of contenders which included the likes of Midnight Juggernauts, The Devastations and Architecture In Helsinki. They join the esteemed companionship of Augie March and The Drones as winners of the award, and thus a canon that is quickly shaping up as the truer representation of quality Australian music; unfussed by record sales, industry meddling, or a history involving sharing management with John Farnham at any point in their career. The Sydney duo receives $25,000 for their troubles.
Earlier in proceedings Sydney funk-pop outfit Blue Juice were announced as the winners of the $15,000 Red Bull 'Outstanding Potential' award, and Melbourne based New Buffalo was the recipient of the MySpace Public Vote award, for which she apparently receives $50,000 worth of promotional support on the site. A bittersweet victory then as New Buffalo basically won more 'friends' than Blue Juice and The Mess Hall have combined!
