The latest discovery by Stones Throw Records’ (home to Madlib, Aloe Blacc, J Dilla, Mayer Hawthorne and more), The Stepkids have an uncanny ability to distil the best parts of your record collection and make it in to something completely new, and they do it all with live instruments and stunning visuals.
Their debut self titled album is steadily winning fans across the country, whilst their live show has been described as one of the clear hits of the recent CMJ music conference, making this Connecticut trio the buzz band of the Summer season.

Not easily categorised (one of their greatest traits), people have tried and failed to come up with comparisons as diverse as Rotary Connection, ELO, Mizell Brothers produced Donald Byrd, Steve Miller circa ‘Fly Like An Eagle’ and yes, even The Beatles but The Stepkids pave their own way by forging a new sound that is greater than the sum of its parts. All three core members write and sing on the record and in the live surrounds and all have a wealth of experience playing for and with the likes of Alicia Keys and Lauryn Hill. The Stepkids groove is a fusion of punk and jazz, West African and 1960s folk, neo and classic soul, classic funk and 20th century classical. The band produce, engineer and record themselves on a reel-to-reel.
There’s no singular icon, no singular sound, and no singular way of making it happen for the Stepkids. It’s psychedelia for the 21st century, where the focus is on the whole. Don’t miss their debut tour of Australia before they blow up and write the book on what’s cool in 2012 and beyond.
