Hobart + Music = Yeah! started in January 2009 as a one-day festival designed to showcase underground local bands. The first event was held at the Fern Tree Community Centre and featured ten local acts and one international artist, all spanning multiple genres including rock and blues, lo-fi folk, pop and experimental.
The second installment of the festival was granted funding from Arts Tasmania as part of Amplified 2009, Tasmania’s very own music industry summit, and was held at Salamanca Arts Centre’s Venue and Courtyard. The increased budget allowed us to showcase interstate as well as local artists, with the focus on forging strong and long-lasting relationships with Hobart musicians’ mainland counterparts.
Hobart + Music = Yeah! 2010 is again set to coincide with Amplified 2010. This time the focus is on the development and advocacy of grass-roots music practices through the utilisation of creative partnerships with non-traditional music venues, visual artists and multimedia producers. It’s about creating a realistic and down-to-earth infrastructure for musicians that is consistent in its approach and hence reaps gradual reward over time.
We are teaming up with local label and online blog Clones and Clones, who concern themselves with underground music scenes and DIY aesthetics, and have recently been focusing on the relationship between Hobart arts culture and that of our interstate counterparts.
The chosen artists for Hobart + Music = Yeah! 2010 all possess specific traits: their creativity shines through above all else, and success is measured not in dollars but in artistic vision.
