Kamikaze Trio
The Greyhound, Melbourne

Friday February 08, 2008 with 0 Mess+Noise champion in attendance.

"It doesn't matter where you go, you're not gonna end up anywhere" says the trio's Sam Agostino during a pause in tonight's set. Is this an oblique reference to drummer Andy Moore's impending relocation to Europe? What is for sure is that Moore's move has put two of Melbourne's finest, the Kamikaze Trio and Digger & the Pussycats, on hold indefinitely.

And while the Pussycats are winding up with a full-blown tour, the Trio is being put to bed with a handful of more low key shows, including tonight's rare trip across the river.

Set up on the floor, with room to move and an appreciative crowd, the band are clearly happy to be here and as physical as ever. They cut loose with a set that, while based on tracks from their album, often feels more like watching a jam or rehearsal. Songs are pulled out of shape; middle eights are stretched into fresh territory. At times they seem to be focused inwards, watching each other closely, before reaching a point where they all decide to break outwards - especially noticeable on "My Demons", which positively explodes.

They close with a thundering version of the venomous "7 to 1", Snoop Mitchell shirtless and sweaty, beating his bass into submission. It's not often you get the chance to see a band leaving the game in peak condition. You've got a few chances left to catch them - four, to be precise - miss out and regret it.
