I've DAFSFFS.
New movie with the big doofus from Flight Of The Conchords. Could be hilarious (see last bit of trailer), could be the New Zulland 'Napolean Dynamite'.

taika waititi = awesome
Who is that, by the way?
he's made a few shorts and acted in small roles in new zealand. he pretended he was asleep at the oscars while his nomination was called out for best short film.
Cute. So no one into the idea of this movie? Granted, it could be a massively self-conscious nerd-hero flick. But it could be real good.
hmmm
a dvdrip of this would be nice, thanks!
Hmm... waits for Napoleon Dynamite comparisons
This film is currently my favourite!
Everything about it is hilarious and charming.
So many Charmcore movies these days.
I strongly disagree. this movie is dull, self-consciously quirky and far too long.
the only funny bits were in the trailer. I was deeply disappointed and did not laugh once.
one and a half stars.
margaret?
I fear every charmcore release that comes out, because if its obviously too self aware, it's fucking horrible.
I fear this movie would be like that, but who knows. That photo makes me angry.
That's a bummer, thad. I laughed through the whole thing, and even when I watched it for the third time I picked up on things I previously missed.
i completely agree with all of the criticism directed at E vs. S being self-concious and a bit too long, but i really found it adorable
i'd like to own a copy just because loren horsley is such a dear in it
taika waititi made this beautiful short called Two Cars, One NIght that I saw late on sbs one night and it's just charming
this film is quite a bit different from that tho
I really liked it. Come awwn the dress as your favourite animal party was rad. The apple core animation part kind of confused me...and reminded me of the animated hamburger part in 'Better Off Dead'. Spose it's sort of art or something.
Phoenix Foundation made a nice soundtrack.
I finally saw this last night and found it very charming and also very different from both his shorts. Well why would you want to do the same sheet all the time?
And he proves you can do a romantic comedy without it being too heavy on the cheese.
The lead chicka (dangerous person) is absolutely fantastic.
For a debut feature, I say I heart Taika.
Yeah, although it was not what I had expected, it still resonated with me a lot when I saw it last week. Pretty unexpectedly heartfelt in places.
''OK people, let's make this hippen.''
I passed a small amount of urine at this point.
Yeah. I saw it at MIFF last year and it was hilarious.
It does help to watch it with a room full of hyped-up Kiwis though.
Really, there are some totally GOLD parts in it. Like the cinema with the teeth coming out of the pavement in front that people keep tripping over and the porn that keeps popping up on his pals computer when they're trying to have a serious conversation. Ha!
i agree with this completely.
was really pretty shit.
I thought it felt like they had filmed the first draft script. Some nice moments, but the story, characters and relationships needed serious development. I love FOTC, but I found Jemaine's character in this really unlikeable. I've got no problem with socially inept cantankerous weirdos generally (being one, myself) - there just wasn't much that was redeeming about the character - I just didn't buy why she would even be bothered hanging around him. Shame, as seemed like their were the seeds of some really great ideas in it.
Their = there.
... ugh.
yeah, I know what you mean by first draft script. it did seem at least very rushed in that process. I found the jokes came fast enough to not let me notice about how little we were lead to care about Jermaine's character. Good point though, and I can see why a lot of people thought this was a rubbish film. Kind of relies a lot on you finding the jokes funny.
collaterly - i agree with your comments about jemaine's character being unlikeable. there needed to be something that he did or said that redeemed him. it was like there was a cute moment missing
but loren horsely - what a joy she is
i still want to own this
She was good, agreed. But that scene towards the end where she follows this big morose grump around the hillside did make me want to slap her for being such a deluded sap. I got no sense that Jemaine's character even really liked her during most of the film. The whole thing at the end with him picking her the flowers seemed a bit of a tacked-on rom-com cliche in order to solve the lack of development in his character and in the relationship.
I'm probably over-analysing - but I think this could've been so much better than it was.
he was just trying to please his dad and be the good alive son and fucked everything in the process. he was all bravado. the fact he was trying so hard was endearing to me, even though he was a cripple punching dick.
dangerous person had the horn for him and then must have found him endearing also and could see his family was a bit fucked unlike hers. so she gave him a bit of latitude. cos she was pretty lonely too.
it possibly could have been a much better film with more money, maybe not. anyway it's out there now. More please Taika Waititi.
more money & more time*
i liked this movie. i am not sure i found it overly funny, but i did find it sweet and endearing. and it made me wish i was still acting. i want to see it again (not on the pixelated inter-rip), and think i could happily just sit and enjoy it for a while longer.
Horse
damn
damn
It wasn't hilarious and I reckon it's probably easy to discount as just another kitsch indie flick but give it a shot and you might find there's more to it than meets the eye. Very sweet film. I really liked the cast.
I wasn't sure whether to like it or hate it as I was wathcing. Overall though, I thought it was OK.
saw this last night. i wanted to like it, but this movie should've been a blowjob.
This is on SBs in half an hour. Not sure if I wanna watch it or watch Tannenbaums on DVD.
Tenenbaums. Always go Tenenbaums.
im enjoying it.
Horse.
I really enjoyed ''Nerd vs Dork''- I guess I was in the mood for it. I loved the brother. There are plenty of movies it reminded me of and I can easily see how someone wouldn't be able to stomach it. Tennenbaums another night.
And also, Boy, from the same writer/director, just came out in cinemas. And is really good, and loses the Napoleon Dynamite-ish tone which was occasionally on the nose.
dangerous person
