The greatest living author.

history  said about 1 year ago:

I don't think this thread will ever get a reply but fuck it, I guess most great authors are only discovered after they're dead.

MountainMan  said about 1 year ago:

no, he's not.

history  said about 1 year ago:

yes, he is

T J Honeysuckle  said about 1 year ago:

He got a bit of a run in this thread, history
Oh, and yes he is, MM.

Simon_Sez  said about 1 year ago:

Hmm...read a couple of his books.

A friend of mine is quite obsessed with ol Cormac.

'Greatest living author'; I don't know about that, though.

Interferon  said about 1 year ago:

Cited by Mark Linkous as a major influence.

history  said about 1 year ago:

Looking forward to seeing how the Coen's do No Country For Old Men, I really loved that book. It was a grisly tale though.

MountainMan  said about 1 year ago:

gabriel garcia marquez is still alive.

it's all personal preference, surely.

T J Honeysuckle  said about 1 year ago:

If he isn't the best, then who would you nominate?

yer right mounty, it's all personal preference, but I've found Cormac's stuff to be basically flawless all the way through.

mulligan  said about 1 year ago:

sutree
awesome book
that is all

sum1  said about 1 year ago:

Blood Meridian for mine. The Road is also awesome. Everything I've read of his is magnificent.

yrspiritflares  said about 1 year ago:

Reading the Road now. Half-way through it. First book of his I've read.

Like it a lot. Mainly for the descriptiveness - trees, snow, outdoors, etc. Might like it a heap more by the end.

Quietly hysterical (typically American?) 'end-of-the-world' theme tho' which I'm a bit suss about at the moment.

astralwerkor  said about 1 year ago:

Just finished The Road, also first of his I've read. Loved it, had an underlying intensity which flared in parts and was threatening to flare in others. Emotionally it creeps up on you too.

Quietly hysterical (typically American?) 'end-of-the-world' theme tho' which I'm a bit suss about at the moment.

The reason for the destruction is never actually stated, which I think legitimises the premises. If it had been revealed, well then sure, you could view it as a contextual book time wise, but as it is I think the focus is less on the importance of the event that precipitated it all.

astralwerkor  said about 1 year ago:

Oh, and where should I go from here?

outerspacextrapnel  said about 1 year ago:

I just read All The Pretty Horses. Good, but I don't really see what the fuss is about. I'd like to read The Road though.

ed  said about 1 year ago:

the one required mccarthy is blood meridian. don't finish with this guy until you've tried that. the pretty horses trilogy is patchy.

FrankieTeardrop  said about 1 year ago:

Blood Meridian is a fucking awesome book. Probably the most full-on nihilistic, hallucinatory account of the ''Wild West'' ever.

His other books, while worthy., don't really stack up in comparison. Except for Sutree, which another kind of thing altogether.

puretokyo  said about 1 year ago:

either my number one or number two author

love him

am halfway through blood meridian, have been reading in stops and starts. it's hard and brilliant. makes all the pretty horses -> the road look like sweet valley high novels.

good choice of director, i reckon, TJ.

yes, all the pretty horses was made into a movie, whatwhat. with matt damon and penelope cruz. didn't see it, but it was supposed to be a bit hit and miss.

MountainMan  said about 1 year ago:

fark. i gotta write faster.

T J Honeysuckle  said about 1 year ago:

All his books are optioned as movies.
I want someone - Alex Cox? Quentin Tarantin? to finally make ''Blood Meridian.

ed  said about 1 year ago:

tommy lee jones owns the rights to all of cormac's books, i think. i can't remember who is directing but blood meridian is in pre-production. it's doubtful to make the same impression as the book. the real power of it is in the sheer language and description of violence and hate.

ed  said about 1 year ago:

just imdb-ed it. ridley scott. fuck.

cheezel  said about 1 year ago:

he's no steven king!

astralwerkor  said about 1 year ago:

Man, I can't wait for the film version of The Road. I'm still pushing through with Blood Meridian, but I've left it so long between sittings that it has lost a little of power and emotion and continuity. I'm still to read No Country For Old Men, but it is certainly on my to-do list before the Cohen brothers movie, which looks fantastic.

SheikYerbouti  said about 1 year ago:

Astral, re the cellar episode in the Road, there's something in that bit I didn't get... do I post or risk it being a spoiler?

astralwerkor  said about 1 year ago:

PM me sheik.

astralwerkor  said about 1 year ago:

I'm still waiting to accomodate your inquiry sheik.

And John Hillcoat is apparently going to film ''The Road''.

nikkster  said about 10 months ago:

my favourites are blood meridian and the crossing. I did enjoy The Road immensely, i felt he was trying something slightly new and it worked well - can't wait to see the movie

whatwhat  said about 4 months ago:

re-reading all the pretty horses so that i can read the sequels, which i never got around to when i read all the pretty horses the first time around.

what's the best soundtrack for reading his schtuff? i'm thinking richmond fontaine or sommat.

books  said about 4 months ago:

Nick Cave's soundtracks to The Proposition and the Assassination of Jesse James (the latter especially does it for me)

101010101010101  said about 4 months ago:

Cormac has no regard for grammar and neither should you hes a great author though

MountainMan  said about 4 months ago:

you can't write his novels without a great command of what you're doing, grammar and punctuation wise.
