Thought I'd restart a Serge Gainsbourg thread from the old M & N. Has anyone seen the D'Autres Nouvelles Des Etoiles dvd set? I love the first dvd but the second dvd definitely veers off into some dodgy territory, like Nazi Rock or Charlotte For Ever for example. However, the Melody Nelson clips alone are enough reason to watch the DVDs as are the late 60's clips.
I just bought Vu de L'exterieur as well. Considering Rock Around the Bunker was the album after this, I was a bit worried this would be quite dodgy but was pleasantly surprised.

Mondo hereby shows appreciation.

Mondo - your profile pic is great!
Bigstar where are you?
He's a huge Gainsbourg fan. He recently translated the lyrics from Historie de Melody Nelson into English. I must get them onto the web somehow so that people can access them.
Two Gitanes up from me, as well. Sometimes I even enjoy Rock Around the Bunker (the song, not the album) if I'm dans le mood.
the DVD set is brilliant!
anyone know what film the 'Requiem pour un con' clip is from? That guitarist looks suspicious..
i need to some, Serge is good at soothing broken hearts
is this where i wank on about seeing Jane Birken last year?
I need the DVD! Anyone who needs to catch up on all the birthday and Xmas presents you missed buying me, cough up.
djbollocks - could you please???
I just bought a biography the other day "A Fistful of Gitanes" - has anyone read it?
Must get the DVD set..I wouldn't be leaving the house for quite some time.
The "Requiem Pour Un Con" clip is from a film called Le Pacha. Damn it looks good, Serge looks so damn cool standing there in the studio.
Littlerach - you saw Jane Birkin? Did she perform many of Serge's songs or was it more recent stuff?
I read the bio a while back, but it's probably a good time to revisit.
I found I had a deeper appreciation after listening to Mick Harvey's interpretations on 'Intoxiocated Man' and 'Pink Elephants'. His are some of the best English translations and versions I've heard, so much love went into those records. Those versions shit all over the recent Cat Power / Karen Elson cover of 'Je t'aime'.
If I ever marry, I want Serge and Destroy to be be the band that plays at my wedding.
all of serge's songs
she has the body of a 19 year old, the face of a hag and the vocabulary of an upper class twit but she was ace
with the band arabesque, who were amazing
"A Fistful of Gitanes" is a great read, lots of interview quotes from Jane Birkin. I read my copy far too fast though so will have to read it again at a more subdued pace.
Those versions shit all over the recent Cat Power / Karen Elson cover of 'Je t'aime'.
i can't believe anyone let those two fucking idiots anywhere near that song
They have to be a step up from Abigail though.
I've never heard of Serge and Destroy, where are they based?
The Brian Molko cover of "Requiem ..." is awful. I don't mind Jarvis Cocker's version "je suis venu te dire que je m'en vais" though. The Mick Harvey covers are pretty good translations.
only ever seen them once, at a friend's birthday party. Melb based, but don't know that they play that often. Basically a great Serge cover band.
i reckon abigail has more professionalism and class than fucking cat power
i can't believe i just said that
Ooh, check this:
"A documentary / archive project dedicated to cover versions of Serge Gainsbourg's most famous song. The current collection stands at 121 versions and a ninety-minute documentary containing extracts from 64 versions was premiered on Valentine's Day 2003"
http://www.ouhypo.org/jetaime/index.html#
121 versions and neither Abigail nor Kim Salmon are there.
I love the idea of a Serge covers band. Do they sing in French or have they translated the songs?

has anyone been to his house in Paris?
Alors, Gainsbourg news.
Jane Birkin is touring again, this time as part of Adelaide Festival.
Jane Birkin Sings Serge Gainsbourg
In a powerful homage to her partner and mentor, the style icon and darling of the French avant-garde presents a special concert of Gainsbourg’s music to mark 20 years since his death.
Lulu Gainsbourg (Serge and Bambou's son Lucien) releases his debut album From Gainsbourg To Lulu in November.
''...the artist invited some of the biggest names in music such as Marianne Faithfull, Iggy Pop, Shane MacGowan, Rufus Wainwright, Vanessa Paradis, Richard Bona and Angelo Debarre, and also big stars from the movies such as Johnny Depp, Scarlett Johansson and Melanie Thierry.''
''Lulu rewrote some classics of rock, chanson and the soundtracks of his father such as ''Initials B.B.'' (performed by Iggy Pop), ''Bonnie & Clyde'' (Johansson), ''Ne Dis Rien'' (Thierry), ''Ballade de Melody Nelson'' (Paradis and Depp) and ''Sous Le Soleil Exactement'' (MacGowan), and also delves into his greatest weakness: jazz. With the help of Debarre and his gipsy group, he has reconstructed ''Poinçonneur Des Lilas'' in jazz manouche style, and with the help of Bona, he reworked ''La Javanaise'' with an Afro-Cuban rhythm.''
Hi. Lol.
Jane Birkin! Is it likely that there'll be shows in other states, or is it an exclusive?
It looks like her show will be 3 days before the 21st annivrsary of Serge's death.
Is it likely that there'll be shows in other states
Hope so. She was great a few years back at Hamer Hall.
I really want to see her again.
Saw her doing the Arabesque thing few years ago. Not as awesome as French Pop styles...
very likely
Here is Lulu and Scarlett Johansson singing Bonnie and Clyde!
Haha. I think I've figured Scarlett Johansson out!
I thought people here were a-sexual?
Amaaaayzing!
reeeeeeeeeally hoping sydney gets this.

yeah boy! SERGE is the password. Summer is nuts so i just got $55 tickets but you can specify level 2 (in Sydney), the seats look good (just above the front of the stage)
Pretty excited that there's a Brisbane show. I wasn't expecting that.
thanks esquared
How come the tickets are cheaper in the front than in the back????
Okay. they are lower than ground level.
Jane Birkin's Australian shows start tomorrow night? Who's going? $85 is a hell of a lot of money to pay, but I think it must be done.
(unnecessary question mark?)
Argh, alas. I just can't afford it. She was great last time out here - I'd love to see the whole set of Gainsbourg songs, not just the few she sung in 'Arabesque'.
Is Melbourne sold out? Recital centre says this show is not for sale.
