BBC says...

...The award, which recognises the best UK or Irish album of the past year, comes with a prize of £20,000. The winner will be revealed on 5 September....

Hazard_Man  said about 5 years ago:

Go Guillemots!!

But Arctic Monkeys will win it . . .

thegirlwhocrieddave  said about 5 years ago:

dull dull dull dull dull

predictable though...

HEB  said about 5 years ago:

My £10 is on Richard Hawley...

HEB  said about 5 years ago:

Bit of a hubbub that some of the BBC Sound of 2006 artists missed out on the final 12...

Particularly Plan B and Corinne Bailey Rae

It was also predicted that Lily Allen would get a nod.

The winner can be a bit left field, so the Monkeys aren't a shoe-in

tangy_zizzle  said about 5 years ago:

I'm surprised Plan B didn't make it. Thought the Burial album was in with a chance too.

HEB  said about 5 years ago:

Actually...

Where the f is Kate Bush - Aerial

Certainly a better LP than Thom Yorke's [which is a guilt inclusion as Radiohead ain't had much luck here]

buddychilzelski  said about 5 years ago:

I thought Sway were finished after It's never been a better time to rock n roll. Good on them for the nomination.

McGauz  said about 5 years ago:

carn Editors - The Back Room!

HEB  said about 5 years ago:

Editors won't win.

The LP came out 51 weeks ago. There's already complaints that it's too old for inclusion.

Also the fact they they re-released THREE singles from the LP has really put people off them. When you've had seven singles, all on a major(ish) label, but only four different songs, makes people think poorly of you

anonymous  said about 5 years ago:

lou rhodes could be a dark horse, mercury like female acts, and she's the former singer of lamb.

anonymous  said about 5 years ago:

can't see the token urban act this year, but the last years been pretty so so for that genre.

though roots manuva's newie could have got a nod.

McGauz  said about 5 years ago:

ah well.. can't help my enthusiasm.. didn't realise it was that old.

i just hope it's not the artic monkeys

Goodbye_beret!  said about 5 years ago:

I'm glad DIZZEE RASCAL got a gong.

ProDelgado  said about 5 years ago:

Out of those lot, my favourite was probably Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan...

Inactivist  said about 5 years ago:

Did I get the wrong idea that the Mercury Prize is kinda more of a Best New Artist thing? Muse? Thom? Scritti MF Politti?

whatwhat  said about 2 years ago:

she worked with muph & plutonic on the album in melbourne.

timewaster  said about 2 years ago:

So she won the award because she's a black female MC doing the South London grime sound, not necessarily because she made the 'best' album. The judges wanted to make a politically correct statement, so they elected not give the award to popular acts who are signed to major labels (ie. Bat For Lashes, Glasvegas, Kasabian).

Oh well. Whatever. Who really gives a shit anyway?

shaun  said about 2 years ago:

Yeah, no shit given here, I gave up on this shitty award when they rewarded borecore kings Elbow over Burial's far superior album.

timewaster  said about 2 years ago:

'Borecore'.

That's a great name for Elbow's musical genre. I'm gonna use that term. Also applies to The Whitlams and any music played on Radio National.

astrousersasmind  said about 2 years ago:

They couldn't have given it to Burial though right, I thought no one knew who he was. No one collecting the award = bad TV = bad ratings = less advertising = less $.

shaun  said about 2 years ago:

No, he revealed himself a few months prior to the award ceremony.

tinyman  said about 2 years ago:

aw bollocks. Radio National has mad music. Tim Richie rocks.

tinyman  said about 2 years ago:

they televise the Mercury prize? they just got the one award/novelty sized cheque to handout. that's gonna take 5minutes max!

timewaster  said about 2 years ago:

Nah. All the nominated bands play a song.

tinyman  said about 2 years ago:

aw. if they played a set each it could've been the best annual music festival. especially that year with the Spice Girls nominated.

HEB  said about 2 years ago:

No adverts on Aunty

tihstar  said about 2 years ago:

Yawn. She'll sell a few more records now and then dissapear ala Ms Dynamite. Well done to her I suppose. It was rather amusing reading the freebie papers this morning about how 'revolutionary' her sound is... check it out and it's bog standard jazzy hip pop... the kind of stuff that artists like Roots and Common have been churning out of a much higher quality for years.

Still glad that La Roux didn't win. She makes me stabby.

2010 shortlist!

* Biffy Clyro – Only Revolutions
* Corinne Bailey Rae – The Sea
* Dizzee Rascal – Tongue n' Cheek
* Kit Downes Trio – Golden
* Foals – Total Life Forever
* I Am Kloot – Sky at Night
* Laura Marling – I Speak Because I Can
* Mumford & Sons – Sigh No More
* Paul Weller – Wake Up the Nation
* Villagers – Becoming a Jackal
* Wild Beasts – Two Dancers
* The xx – xx

HEB  said about 1 year ago:

What do you mean the best album didn't win?

Oh, the best nominated album didn't win either?

Sorry, but I'm not surprised

astrousersasmind  said about 1 year ago:

Well I'm just glad that nowhere else in the world seems to be under the thrall of Mumford and Sons. Would have liked to see Wild Beasts get it but XX are hardly the worst on that list.

whatwhat  said about 1 year ago:

the xx are probably the worst live band on that list tho. terrible.

astrousersasmind  said about 1 year ago:

You'd seriously rather listen to Sigh No More or a Biffy Clyro record than XX?

whatwhat  said about 1 year ago:

absolutely not. hate mumford, have no interest in biffy.

but the xx at laneway were shocking.

mrmagoo  said about 1 year ago:

great album, deserved winner
