Their album Y has finally been reissued after only being available on Japanese import for years.
Any Pop Group fans out there?

Yep - shame about their shitty progeny, though!
who?
who's reissued it?
Rhino (who else?)
There's a short interview with Gareth Sager in May's Uncut:
...I got a perverse laugh out of everyone raving about Joy Division and Gang of Bore -basically stuff that was half an inch on from the Doors, Iggy's The Idiot and Dr Feelgood - knowing that if they ever heard us, they'd know there was a lot more going on at that time
love it
ever since i heard "she is beyond good and evil" on (old, sydney-only) JJJ many years ago
many many years ago
Count me in. An old friend gave me his original copy of For How Much Longer Do We Tolerate Mass Murder? on extended loan once. I was secretly hoping that he'd forget he ever lent it to me.
What bad progeny, socks? Rip Rig & Panic weren't so great, but Maximum Joy I really like.
I've got that Mark Stewart record Learning to Cope With Cowardice too.
what are you talking about Socks? Y is fucking amazing.
Stewart solo album 'As The Veneer Of Democracy Starts To Fade' is freakin awesome.
AND features Sugarhill Gang backing band members! Playing fucked up punk/dub with infinite delay!
yes yes, goddamn this shit has made my day, it'd be even better if i had the money to buy it.
well at least you won't have to fork out the big bucks for the japanese import anymore.
yeah stewart solo is the boss
that recent soul jazz comp is unbelievable
listening to stewart right now
fuck he's good
shitty progeny!
wash your mouth out socks.
I particularly like Rip Rig and Panic - Neneh Cherry is a great singer.
But also I love New Age Steppers.
but yes, i liked the pop group very much.
Just dug out ''Learning To Cope With Cowardice'' by Mark Stewart + Maffia. Haven't listened to it for yonks and yonks. I'll be so bold to say, that it's even better than Y. The scope of the record is amazing. From Moroccan trance rhythms, to dub-disco, and fragmented cut up beats, classical samples..it's all there in one fucking glorious mess of a record. Spooky, raw, dubby, in places it sounds like a soundtrack to an early eighties UK hardboiled cop drama. Although it's co-produced by Mark, this is gotta be Adrian Sherwood's finest hour behind the knobs.
ok, rant over.
''we are all prostitutes'' is the craziest jam ever!
everyone has their price.
some great bootlegs here
including an awesome cover of 'shake the foundations'
I remember seeing Mark Stewart at the Metro in Melbourne years ago (can't remember when, but Audio Active were on the bill too). I love Mark Stewart & Mafia as well as The Pop Group and Tackhead etc, so to see him play live (to not many people) was a real treat.
I really love the Pop Group.
I was actually searching for a thread on Maximum Joy or Bristol post-punk, but this'll have to do.
About 80% of my bedroom dancing playlist for 2006/7 was post-Pop Group;
''Stretch'', ''Building Bridges'', and ''Searching for a Feeling'' by*** Maximum Joy***
''Papa's Got a New Pigbag'' by uh.. Pigbag
''Bob Hope Takes Risks'' by Rip Rig and Panic
Upbeat as, I wish more music was uplifting/positive like the above (even though the Pop Group itself wasn't)
i like you already!
awww! grins quietly
Good soundtrack right now.
that dennis bovell thread made me think of mark. this is rather amusing:
mark stewart mini doco
Apparently the Pop Group are set to reform with a new album, The Alternate.

Prophetic! There's a great episode of Ashes to Ashes which refers to The Pop Group a lot. A suspect wears a ''We Are All Prostitutes'' tee and has a poster on the wall. The song plays. Early eighties UK hardboiled cop drama ensues.
black eyes - pop group for the 21st century
