I was there last year 100s1000s, which coincided with the folsom street fair (which was 60,000 gay men and me). I have photos of street Bjs, street BJS I tells ya!!!

Haight ashbury is pretty cool, go to Recycled Records (I picked up Meet the Beatles and genuine White album for like 10 bucks), and theres another MASSIVE record store (like maybe an acre of shelving, or 3 JBs worth) on the corner of the main street (opposite the park).

in SF? Hang on, lemme find those links for the downtown hostels. North Shore is a fun neighbourhood but I only visited, didn't sleep there.

City Centre and Downtown were both cheap and non-dodgy when I stayed. The Downtown one was probably my favourite.

oh, the Chelsea International in NYC is crap, FYI. Good location, but unbelievably hot in summer and a real party hostel.

jason is in oakland, they don't have a very good football team compared to SF.

hmm .. even when i was staying way up on the upper west side, it wasn't THAT inconvenient ... sure, a 10 minute subway ride to get down to fun places, but oh well, the room was better than the whitehouse, and only $5 or $10 more expensive

Gershwin Hostel (as opposed to the Hotel attached to it) on the Upper East side was good too, horse.
