This is a top notch album of the freak-folk variety.

not that freaky though.

but GOOD!

hiponion  said about 5 years ago:

correct, sir

top-notch album, quite, rather

blake3030  said about 5 years ago:

This is a seriously accomplished album.

I was listening again last night and felt an excitement for music that I hadn't felt in quite some time. Some of these songs are just perfect.

Unconventional song structures, great sounds and awesome vocal play.

This is gonna be a top 5'er for sure.

hiponion  said about 5 years ago:

You know what, it's probably top ten for me right now too. Exceptional songs, you're right, sounds very accomplished.

But there's been a lot of stuff this year I've really been diggin' - best year for new music in quite a while.

blake3030  said about 5 years ago:

Nothing really grabbed me until about June to be honest.

hughsie  said about 5 years ago:

hmm. i must'nt have really given it a chance because i thought it was pretty limp on first listen. will give it another go when i get back from uni.

overground  said about 5 years ago:

how does the new album compare to the first one? I really liked that one. a friend saw them in NYC a year or so ago and came back raving about them. Now that they're on Warp, will be get a local release?

From what I've heard of Our Brother The Native (Fat Cat) they sound a little like GB too with perhaps a little more Animal Collective influence.

blake3030  said about 5 years ago:

I like this more and more as days go by

Now Glenn Richards is in there doing a cameo

I finally bought Vekatimekatamenstakka and yeah I got an Augie March record with a few of them Grizzly Bear hits that are easily found elsewhere. RIPPED OFF. This is why downloading before buying is a good thing.

Thank you Volkswagen ad here in the states for ruining this band for me. Its on every fucking ad break!

theparisend  said about 1 year ago:

just heard this band

pretty grounding to see the 'started three years ago by blake3030', but not all that surprising

that boy has taste...

think this is the album i should start with.

out on warp too

timewaster  said about 1 year ago:

Grizzly Bear are a fine band. Excellent musicians. No hate to them.

But can anybody explain why they're so damn loved? Why they're the hipster belle du jour? They're decent, but they don't have the catchy big singles of an MGMT or a Strokes.

If Grizzly Bear were from Melbourne, they would be signed to a local indie. The national broadcaster would completely ignore them. They would play to 100 people with Gaslight Radio or The Sand Pebbles. But they're from Brooklyn, so the blogs go bananas and they play a 5000 seat room...

Some things never change.

theparisend  said about 1 year ago:

honestly?

i think it's the name

it's pitched nicely between the real-reason-for-wearing flanelette of the early seattle days and the fey folksiness of iron and wine/palace

they just look like your next favourite band... somehow

plus, playing atp pavement curated would help them

bebop  said about 1 year ago:

Plus they're gay!

theparisend  said about 1 year ago:

got the whole album. very agreeable

theparisend  said about 1 year ago:

and noticed they're featured on the soundtrack to the second twilight film...

could account for newfound popularity amongst certain circles

Ha, this is where your post fell apart.

timewaster  said about 1 year ago:

No, it's true.

andydepressant  said about 1 year ago:

I agree. The only fault with the analogy is that, given the technical and vocal ability of the musicians, I kinda doubt a band like this would form in oz. Our cities aren't that big that enough like minded and gifted vocalists/musicians would start a band together. Not that I think they are particularly gifted in the song dept but...

timewaster  said about 1 year ago:

Didn't Grizzly Bear study music at a New York university? Isn't that where they met?

There's heaps of technically brilliant musicians at Australian universities. But they mostly play jazz, classical or fusion. They don't wanna play indie rock. It's too easy for them.

Although ocassionally, they become session musos for Farnsy and Barnsy.

andydepressant  said about 1 year ago:

Thirsty Merc!!!!!

Though what your saying proves my point I reckon.

Zaphod  said about 1 year ago:

Really? I would've thought they were one of the newer ''indie'' (#8 debut for Vek on Billboard kind of makes this label a bit redundant) bands who would've appealed to your brand of pop writing AD.. Ito their popularity - they write really nice, sweet, catchy pop tunes that aren't necessarily cased in production you'd typically associate with pop music - the melody appeals to the broader market while the more leaning to avant garde elements (note: leaning to; e.g. bass player's noise loops) give something for the hipster wanker to bang on about after a few too many. Same story with the last 2x Animal Collective LP/EPs, and the Panda Bear record. The list goes on. Catchy pop music, interesting or at least non-standard/traditional production/arrangement, Pitchfork/Stereogum masturbation.

I've used this a bit recently in a few different contexts and been asked WTF.

LOL.

andydepressant  said about 1 year ago:

I can't really remember or sing any of their songs besides humming a few bars here and there. No narrative is the main thing. ''Think it over, take it easy'' guitar lick, piano bit, choral vocal bit, some other bit. All bits nice but yeh not lodged in my head as a whole.

Zaphod  said about 1 year ago:

Fair nuff - most of my post was directed at timewaster questioning why they are popular.. I get yours is a taste thing. That being said, having been up the front in January I'm not racing back to see them at the Enmore again..

theparisend  said about 1 year ago:

the track that loops in my head is Easier.

and the last track is a nice one too

all in all i don't think it holds my attention as an album, but it's still in the pile of oftenlistens
