always wanted to get into these dudes. best starting point?>
good shit. deryck canyon worded me up on these lot.
they were an amazing band
albums...um - "wammo" or "capsul" maybe? "solar3" is incredible - and "vortura" is older but is kind of the record that set them on their way.
"b.e.i.p" and "photon" EPs are awesome
true true
saw them at the Annandale once, around '96 or '97 after "wammo" came out.
saw them at Macquarie Uni Bar the following night. awesome, awesome, awesome...nothing like it.
i'd go wammo for accessible. got vortura and robot world as well. they had a best-of type thing (self-titled i think) out through flying nun a few years ago, probably the easiest to find.
whammo/capsul are untouchable.
awesome, awesome band.
they are rad, but seriously, as important as VU?
moreso OhYeah.
for mine, anyway.

that was a great show. so loud.

i know where columbo is coming from.
they're playing again you know. apparently they played a low hum fest in feb. oh man, i so wanted to go bailterspace: totally worth pitching a tent in a frosty windtunnel ah hour from the nearest convenience in a foreign country for! even if it's not the 90s anymore..
i would like to see bailterspace play IN a frosty windtunnel! some like one of those 'ice bars' but with industrial strength fans blowing at the same time.
They will never be as good as they were as The Gordons.
they're playing again you know.
Oh, such good news.
The Punters Club show back in the olden days was one of the best gigs I've ever been to.
And yes, very loud.
no no! somewhere warm with nice cocktails!
Tru Texaco, but maybe never as important as The Gordons as far as influencing a slew of NZ bands and other international bands.
Literally, Vortura changed the way I isten to music, I rememeber walking into Echo records in Dunedin when Vortura was released, bought it, loved it and progressed in my musical education. Still in my top five bands.
They are rumoured to be recording/releasing again this year.
I want to walk through snow and stand around in a fur lined parker!
Maybe while listening to The Chills playing Pink Frost?
One of the first bands I saw live that were truly menacing, haunting and beautifully loud. Saw them at the Gluepot in AKL NZ on the Thermos tour early 91. I didn't really like the mid 90's stuff from round the time they based themselves in NY. Got a bit jangly poppy for my liking, early shit is insane.

Love the guitar and bass tones on Wammo.
That mad warped tremolo on the guitars on Zapped is so mental.
Anyone got a copy of any of their albums?
Yes, several. I heartily recommend them!
They're all out of print I think outey. You can pick up pretty cheap cd copies online though.
I've the complete collection. Absolutely wonderful band. Their Ep's are overlooked but really worth tracking down as well, especially The Aim.
I was talking to someone who saw them play at the Prince of Wales in '93 I think. He said there was hardly anyone there but it was one of the best gigs he'd ever seen.
Robot World was my introduction, so that will always be my fave. They kinda fizzled out at the end...
sadface.
first time I saw them was 95 or 96 at the Annandale - then again the following night at Macquarie Uni. both were 2 of the best gigs I've ever been to!
my experience at the Mac Uni gig may have been enhanced by the sharing of some mystery form of medication by a friendly stranger/femme-fatale
Drummer Brent McLachlan says he and Alister Parker have been working on new material/album at Brent's studio in NYC.
Hurry up!
There's a best of compilation that's easily available. Some of the others might start coming back, now that Flying Nun have reverted to their original owner they seemed to have switched back from just keeping best of comps in print to bringing back original albums, though I've not heard anything specific about Bailterspace.
Alternatively try Slow Boat records in Wellington, they sell loads of OOP NZ stuff online.
The best of is fine for an intro anyway though.
i found my bootleg!
Columbo, how are we gonna get that tape digitized and into my computer? I would love to listen to that recording.
hey, i'll get it done & i'll be in touch soon :)
:]
I'd love to have a listen to that one! They played the next night at the Corner Hotel, but I missed it as my band had a gig at the Arthouse. Funny too, our support on the night at the Arthouse was a little known band playing their first show...Augie March.
From memory 1996 marked where Alister Parker started changing the way he sang so more songs had the sort of whiny ''Stop wasting our ti-ime...'' delivery of Splat as opposed to the smooth delivery of X or Shadow, etc.
I think 1997 was the last time I saw them play.
Hahahaha.. poor Alister.. did anyone happen to see any of his solo shows in NZ a year or two back?
there's one bit in this (bootleg) gig where Alistair starts mouthing off at the loud & disinterested Frenzal Rhomb people just outside the window at the side of the stage
