HAPPY MONDAYS

JunkiePhil  said about 5 years ago  or at  10:15AM on Thursday, July 13 2006 in music

I never bothered with this band as everyone said they were shit.

Then Cumboots made me listen to Pills'n'Thrills & Bellyaches.

It's not too Bad! Kinky Afro is a great dance song as is Loose Fit.

I know nothing about this band apart from what I've seen in 24 Party people.

Tell me some more good songs + Tales of Shauns drug filled antics.

JunkiePhil  said about 5 years ago:

Guess no one does like this band after all.

I want a BEZ in me band. Any takers?

kandos  said about 5 years ago:

you're BEZ enough for your band, JP.

Bittervictorian  said about 5 years ago:

They are great!!! Well, they are on record - I saw Shaun Ryder at Good Vibrations Festival last year and his lifestyle has definitely taken a toll!!!

JunkiePhil  said about 5 years ago:

Yeah, Same old....All good, One day, one of ya friends kicks the bucket ....the next..... their popping out babys???!!?? Crazy week.

I'm up your way on the 28th for Camel Club.

PelicanGodOfJupiter  said about 5 years ago:

I know fuck all too.

They played a BDO a few years back and I always regretted not seeing them. I have a best of and a Black Grape album (note - Black Grape - Stupid Stupid Stupid kicks arse) (note #2 - Shawn Ryder was in Black Grape).

I did see Shawn Ryder DJ at Good Vibrations earlier this year though. I took some photos of him and NOBODY seemed to know who he was except me, another photographer and one girl in the front row who kept screaming at us "THAT'S SHAWN RYDER!!!"

NB - his name could be "Shaun" or "Shawn", but you get the idea.

JunkiePhil  said about 5 years ago:

That Best of is sooo shit.

I got it thinking it'd be a good place to start but it's basicaly Pills'n'thrills with a few remixes. Waste of money!

HEB  said about 5 years ago:

Am I the only person in the world who loved Amateur Night In The Big Top - the album Shaun did in Perth [WA] about three years ago with Kirk Malinder of Cabaret Voltaire?

kandos  said about 5 years ago:

Camel Club, huh?
28th huh?

busy night

freaksandgeeks  said about 5 years ago:

Subtle way of saying were all drug fucked?

JunkiePhil  said about 5 years ago:

"I can't stand the needy "

Haha!

Kit  said about 5 years ago:

the Mondays have three or four best-ofs, a couple of them are good-ish. but they really need either a thorough non-LP singles and b-sides collection, or a reissue series to get them all stuck on bonus discs. Michael Jackson's broke now, we should be able to get the original tracklist back on the first album!

the version of the band that toured Australia a few years ago was pretty bogus, just Shaun and the drummer and Bez, plus the guitarist from Paris Angels who played live with Black Grape, and a bunch of session blokes (and a drugbuddy of Shaun's with a second mic). Shaun had barred Knobhead and Cow from the reformation completely (the FOOL, Day's guitar is the second-most essential element of the Mondays after Shaun's lyrics), and Bez, Paul Ryder and Rowetta had all quit when Shaun called Rowetta a nigger on the way to a UK festival. Bez was convinced to do the tour because he needed the money, Rowetta was paid to record her vocals (they had Kirsty MacColl on tape for Hallelujah too) and Paul apparently hasn't spoken to his brother since.

I saw the Metro show, and Shaun spent half the set sitting on the side of the drum riser reading lyrics off a teleprompter.

I agree ...the Vince Clarke mix of WFL is the bizness. One of the best tracks ever to greet the dancefloor. The clip is cool as well.

I repeat though....DO NOT SEE THEM LIVE ANYMORE.

puretokyo  said about 2 years ago:

''Lie down beside ya, fill ya full of JUNK'' or

''Lie down beside ya, fill ya full of SHAUN''?

Shaun has released his autobiography. It's called 'Twisting my Melon'.

Check out his interview with the Guardian: http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2011/sep/15/shaun-ryder-happy-mondays-caricature

''I suppose I have been a cunt. I know I have ...'' He pauses. ''But I've always tried to be fair.''

taken from the age :

The original line-up of the Happy Mondays is set to re-form for a huge tour, according to a UK report.
The band was among the acts which emerged from the Manchester, England music scene in the late 1980s, but split in 1993.
New reincarnations of the group got back together in 1999 and 2004, and frontman Shaun Ryder has performed under the Mondays mantle for several gigs.
Advertisement: Story continues below
Ryder's brother Paul has not performed with the group since a bitter split in 2000.
But a source tells Britain's The Sun the siblings have now reportedly healed the rift and made plans for a comeback, following in the footsteps of recently reformed fellow Manchester rockers The Stone Roses.
''After the success of The Stone Roses reunion, there's a real clamour to get the group back on the road and document it properly.
''Shaun and his brother Paul have a notoriously patchy relationship but they're willing to sort things out for the sake of the band.
''There will be gigs next summer and a re-release of their classic album Pills 'n' Thrills And Bellyaches. A DVD will also be released of the comeback shows and the documentary.''

despite the fact that 'happy mondays live'' has to be one of the worst things i've ever paid money for, if they tour i'm there!

HEB  said about 4 months ago:

Bez for hire...

In keeping with his eclectic musical upbringing, BEZ takes to the decks for a unique, anything goes DJ set. His set is something of a musical journey, incorporating indie, dance, funk, dubstep, acid, dancefloor classics and even some vintage Mondays material.

Pure ACID HOUSE SETS also available!

HEB  said about 4 months ago:

Whole band for hire...

Shaun Ryder, Paul Ryder, Gary Whelan, Bez and Rowetta Satchell, along with former members Mark Day and Paul Davis (not included in the 1999 reformation) are currently taking bookings for gigs and festival appearances.

''The rumours are true... Happy Mondays, the seminal Manchester band who changed musical culture forever has reformed and will be available for select live gigs across 2012''.

electricsound  said about 4 months ago:

i wonder how much it would cost to get them to play just the forty five and freaky dancing singles and nothing else

Ghostface  said about 4 months ago:

The club where I used to dj booked him when he was here for Splendour 3 years ago. He mainly ran around on the dancefloor with a cowbell. There was no djing done. He did grab the mic from time to time but it was mainly unintelligable gibberish

Coz  said about 4 months ago:

I wonder how much it cost him to get his teeth done?
