M&N's new edgy reviewing style

angelic_layer  said about 5 years ago  or at  11:52AM on Wednesday, March 28 2007 in chat

I been reading some of these reviews...hmm seems a new schitck has hit the m&N reviewers..I dunno..seems a bit negative..like for example..the Laura review..I mean Post rock is post rock yeah? so why teach us the history of post rock? I mean do I need a history lesson? Its like the reviewer read our rantings from 2 years ago and now needs to qualify their understanding of the form..boring. I just wanna know were they good? did it happen? I think I just get an understanding that something happened..apart from an understanding of the reviewers understanding of post rock as a form..

anyone else got a wind of a certain 'style' permeating the new reviews of late?

angelic_layer  said about 5 years ago:

and the drones one?

I tell ya the drones should cover 'Its only rock and roll' as a backlash to this kind of thing..what are they meant to fall down every gig? I think the stones summed it up in that old classic song..

T J Honeysuckle  said about 5 years ago:

That Drones one is a bit short for my taste. What, Demi Dero didn't play?

angelic_layer  said about 5 years ago:

that drones review is the most stupid bag of shit I've read in ages. Poor sook..just buy the friggin t shirt if ya want it in a girls size and give it to ya girlfriend. sheesh...

mipearson  said about 5 years ago:

Didn't we have a whinge a while back about live reviews that were more about the reviewer than the actual band? I cbf DAFSFSFS but I know it's there.

That Drones review reads like a textbook example of that. I was expecting to see what he ate for dinner in the middle of it.

All I got out of it was "They were tight, but the vibe wasn't there, but that could have been because I was depressed".

Alright  said about 5 years ago:

well at least they aint as wanky as the reviews in pfork.

how bout just using a 5 star rating system, i cant be bothered reading the review, i just wanna know if its great or shit.

T J Honeysuckle  said about 5 years ago:

At Lowcut they rate them AND say "If you dig....." as well. Handy.

angelic_layer  said about 5 years ago:

man..that's why I never read em before..they really suck..there's at least 50 posters on this forum I'd trust thir opinions over those fucking reviews..terrible..

and re T shirts : look dude (reviewer) are they fucking 'Poison'? maybe they ran out of T shirts, what you expect the merc truck to be parked out the back of the annandale and funnel the punters through it on their way out? so ya can get ya fucking T shirt for the memorys? FFS.. grow up.

scallywag  said about 5 years ago:

> there's at least 50 posters on this forum I'd trust thir opinions over those fucking reviews

however, each one of those reviewers posts on this forum - now there's a mind fuck for you angelic

blake3030  said about 5 years ago:

I don't bother with the reviews really, it's like reading someone practicing their writing technique, seeing how different they can be to a standard review, trying to set themselves apart.... no matter who it is.

I also vote for a 5 star system.

angelic_layer  said about 5 years ago:

damnation!!
haha

mipearson  said about 5 years ago:

We totally need him to get a M&N messageboard account and weigh in.

That said I couldn't write a review to save my life. I'll give it a try.

Deloris at Revolver, some time ago!

The sound was a bit off where I was standing and they let in this bloody annoying English backpacker who tried her best to ruin the gig for me. That said, Marcus and co were in fine form and shouted and strummed their way through their new album and a few golden oldies too. I think I had pizza for dinner that evening. There was a keyboard onstage but it was only used for one song, and only then for background noise, which was dissapointing. Every band should be a piano band. The end.

blake3030  said about 5 years ago:

I like that review mipearson. I'd appreciate regular reviews like that. Short, to the point.

angelic_layer  said about 5 years ago:

exactly blake. It's like they are silently waiting for that magical call from US rolling stone 'We been watching your work, we need you in LA, heres the ticket..the money, come now!!'

shunt  said about 5 years ago:

i like the drones review. perhaps works moreso as a piece of prose, than a review. but tradtional rock show reviewing is a mighty boring sport anyway

mipearson  said about 5 years ago:

blake: orright. here's another.

Augie March, a Bloody Long Time Ago Somewhere in Melbourne, it Might Have Been The Corner:

It was all going really well until the horn section dropped a chord in Blackpool and Glenn stumbled a lyric and had a bit of a yell. I felt embarrased for my mates I'd dragged along. I hear that their live show has improved since then but their ticket prices have increased along with it and there's only so much I'll pay to see a band I've seen ten times before. The traffic, I remember, was really shithouse but I can't remember what I had for dinner. I can't remember if there was some dick in the crowd yelling out "Future Seal!" but there usually is, so that happened too. The End.

scallywag  said about 5 years ago:

wipey should be doing gig reviews for m&n

his work for eatability.com is par excellence !!

__v  said about 5 years ago:

that drones review was a bit sad, i thought.

using an uptight audience member in a supre dress as an illustration of... what, exactly?

that a band has achieved a little bit of success and thus widened their appeal beyond coolsies?

it read like a slightly more poetic expression of stock standard boring indie elitism. "aw, my personal secret band got big and now all the Wrong Sort of People are going to the gigs and ruining the vibe for the True Fans".

i thought some of the observations about the band were interesting and insightful. but i'm not sure that grumbling about the audience illuminates anything other than the writer's "issues".

ChrisBrimstone  said about 5 years ago:

> i like the drones review. perhaps works moreso as a piece of prose, than a review. but tradtional rock > show reviewing is a mighty boring sport anyway

Yeah but you gotta find a balance between 'good piece of prose' and 'tell the people what the show felt like'. I got a sense of the vibe at the Drones show, but my real question - what was Demi Dero like - wasn't answered. I try to catch supports when i'm reviewing, especially if they're international.....

mathieson  said about 5 years ago:

"at least 50 posters on this forum I'd trust thir opinions over those fucking reviews..terrible.."

Then send those 50 posters your CDs and not us.

Of course, the lack of a review for your music has nothing to do with your latest stupid rant.

mipearson  said about 5 years ago:

mathieson: I'm pretty sure benji reviewed angelic's work.

And I reckon there'll be some chats there when he plays a gig

hey, an angelic thread!

i'm just wondering why this website reviews the same bands OVER AND OVER AND OVER again? are reviewers sent to gigs, or is it just off their own bat? does money change hands? just curious. the lack of breadth is remarkable!

not so much having a whinge as passing comment on something that really jumps out at me.

anonymous  said about 4 years ago:

i'd say its off their own bat, so with the same range of reviewers, they go see things they wanna see, which can lead to some repetition.

wanna see something else, review it yerself?

andyr  said about 4 years ago:

A flick through the first 30 reviews shows only 2 repetitions.

That's not too bad.

T J Honeysuckle  said about 4 years ago:

bites tongue

andyr  said about 4 years ago:

You don't need to do that TJ, I won't yell. :P

michael_horse  said about 4 years ago:

YEAH, WHERE ARE ALL THE Y35.3 REVIEWS ?????

paulie  said about 4 years ago:

mess and noise is totally on the take from missy higgins and shannon noll.

TransientRandom  said about 4 years ago:

i guess those are some pretty point disprovingly moderate stats, andy. this site has definite favourites. is money involved? i'm curious!

''wanna see something else, review it yerself?''

this doesn't relate to my point or question at all.

andyr  said about 4 years ago:

Yes it does have favourites.

Is money involved as in do bands pay to be reviewed? Er, no.

anonymous  said about 4 years ago:

but but, i answered a question with a question, its the perfect defense.

I think any bias or favoritism (and theres probably some trends) is due to the people involved having biases towards certains bands or music, don't think you'd want to go to too many shows of stuff you wouldn't like off your own bat.

emmy hennings  said about 4 years ago:

is money involved? i'm curious!

A lot of the gigs I review (not that I've been reviewing much, lately) are ones that I've paid to get into just like anyone else. There's a token payment per review but it ain't much. Enough to buy you bread and milk for the week, perhaps.

andyr  said about 4 years ago:

Transient, if you want, why don't you start a thread with a list of other bands we should review.

TransientRandom  said about 4 years ago:

haha, smart move... pick on the most articulate subgroup of people here.. :)

sorry, this is not a fight or an attack, there is no agenda, as a member of this board i feel no ''ownership'' or sense of care about what this publication chooses to review. it's just a personal observation and something that has piqued my curiousity for a while.

so it's a personal choice. the bands that the reviewers like the best are reviewed more. that makes perfect sense, and is a great ideology for a publication, in my opinion (and a rare one going by my experience in various outlets of the media in which i have been involved). thanks for answering.

anonymous  said about 4 years ago:

it would make some sense if the mag/site was upfront and forward with it, but i could easily see how that would come off as being wanky and shite. Fine line I guess.

probably just keep bringing it up whenever someone questions it. :)

filterfeed  said about 4 years ago:

the laurels are going to get a scathing review just for that.

kandos  said about 4 years ago:

i disagree.

there is a conspiracy. it involves alex papps, unicorns and metamucil. can't remember the rest of it, but it is undeniably evil.

andyr  said about 4 years ago:

Transient, if you want, why don't you start a thread with a list of other bands we should review.

I was serious about this..

TransientRandom  said about 4 years ago:

i'd be very disappointed if the laurels were reviewed again. it would run contrary to the premise of my original comment.

i'm the last person to ask, andyr. i really only go to my own gigs and spend most of that time smoking outside. i haven't seen anything new for months. i haven't really read about anything new that i've wanted to see either.

Casiopias  said about 4 years ago:

I think it was this thread that got the reviewers hating

:) boo hoo

learn to write then guys.

Casiopias  said about 4 years ago:

ooh they really fucking hate me.

twas worth it.

the price was worth it.
