Bugsy.  said about 4 years ago  or at  6:09PM on Monday, March 26 2007 in chat

on public transport

so i was busted without a ticket on a tram at 11 :15 at night a few weeks ago. i had no change and was going to to flinders street station to catch a train where i planned to buy a ticket.

have any of the legal types around here got any advice on getting out of paying these
is it possible? i really cant afford $158 dollar fine at the moment

michael_horse  said about 4 years ago:

there's a clause in the charter that says you're allowed to buy a ticket at the end of your journey

look it up, write a letter back, quoting it

you might get off

Bugsy.  said about 4 years ago:

thanks
which charter is this ?

michael_horse  said about 4 years ago:

Note: Passengers who do not have a valid ticket because they were running late for their train or did not have sufficient change to purchase one will not be excused on ‘reasonable opportunity’ grounds.

or maybe not

As michael horse wisely said words to the effect of a while back, you knew the law and you chose to break it so you should take responsibility for your actions and deal with the consequences

lordsnot  said about 4 years ago:

step 1: pretend search desperately for your ticket. pat yourself down, rummage through your bag, "i know it's here somewhere" kinda thing.

step 2: accept fine with good grace

step 3: buy a daily zone one and two ticket

step 4: canvas platform trying to find someone with a ticket validated BEFORE time of offence and offer a swap plus any other monetry compensation if needed.

step 5: photocopy ticket and include this with your letter of protestation saying "see i did have one and i eventually found it"

step 6: bask in glee and piss the $158 up the wall

michael_horse  said about 4 years ago:

oh, and advice for next time .. carry unvalidated tickets with you .. easier to rush and validate when they come on... you still might get caught, but better chance

cheezel  said about 4 years ago:

Bugsy-you did the crime, now do the time..............it's the same as a speeding fine, what can you do!?! just wear it:(

Bugsy.  said about 4 years ago:

but it was at 11:15 at night there were no shops around where i could get change or buy a ticket
what was supposed to do? walk

Modi  said about 4 years ago:

I appealed my fine for not having a VALID ticket.

I got a letter back informing me there's no excuse they will accept for not having one, it's just all bureaucratic nonsense.

Bugsy.  said about 4 years ago:

so you didnt get out of paying it then modi

tihstar  said about 4 years ago:

That's what Yarra Trams would have you do, yes.

cheezel  said about 4 years ago:

Bugsy-tell it to the judge............bitch.

SGH  said about 4 years ago:

Yeah, I've sent a letter to them detailing how they failed to uphold their end of the bargain in regards to the service that's supposed to be provided, and it's a standard form letter (which of course detailed none of the issues concerning my particular case) back saying that if I wanted to take it further it's court time.

zooey  said about 4 years ago:

you might be able to tell them you're a student and can't afford the $158 up front and request a payment plan of $10 per week or something like that. i've heard it can happen.

Godzilla  said about 4 years ago:

i remember when visiting melb once, there were signe at the tram stops emphasising the need to have the right money for the ticket machines on the trams, but no indication of what the fare was.

How can you have the right money when they don't tell you what the fare is?

Clive  said about 4 years ago:

last time i got busted for not having a ticket was last year.
I was convinced i had no money so didnt even bother attempting to buy a ticket. turned out i had $20 in $2 coins in my pocket.
silly me

rosiefantail  said about 4 years ago:

I usually carry unvalidated tickets and make sure I sit within easy reach of a validator.

The other day the inspectors gave a really hard time to some guy they saw rushing over to the validator ("If you didn't have anything to hide, then why did you rush over when you saw us?")

Given that the fuckers will fine you pretty much whatever you do, I find the most dignified thing is to say, when they ask why you have no valid ticket, "I'm a fare evader." And when they probe for further information, you say "I'm a fare evader. I enjoy riding trams for free."

mipearson  said about 4 years ago:

benji: sorry mate you're screwed. If you want to take it further the $158 will seem like small change compared to the court costs.

I carry unvalidated tix and sit next to the validator, mostly.

i love zooming down nicholson st on the tram, in the dedicated lane, leaving behind the cars clogged there .... and i love not having to pay for parking in the city

I love zooming out of the city while everyone else is stuck in gridlock on their way in. I wave to them on the Calder.

bwahahahahahahahahaaaaaar.

And free parking too.... ;)

adam  said about 4 years ago:

^^ me too!

HOWEVER. I get speeding fines, and I will hit the next person who says:

"you should have obeyed the law, so neener neener neener"

Fuck y'all.

golden-frown  said about 4 years ago:

i've been fined dozens of times. i just don't buy tickets

as soon as i get infringement notices i just throw them in the bin.

at first i paid one or two fines, but then the court notices came, and then i threw them in the bin as well.

NOTHING HAS EVER HAPPENED TO ME,

nobody has come to my door, nobody has come to take my property away from me.
i've never been arrested, i've never been deported.

if you never pay the fine, nothing will happen and eventually it will just go away through the statute of limitations.

i hope this helps. i'm being serious by the way.

adam  said about 4 years ago:

You fucking legend.... wish i had your cajones!

aleks and the ramps  said about 4 years ago:

you can also buy an unvalidated ticket and put a massive crease down the magnetic strip so it won't validate. if inspectors get on tell them the guy at the 7-11 sold you a dodgey ticket and you paid good money for that damn thing and ain't gonna buy another..

or you can pretend that you can't speak english.

mipearson  said about 4 years ago:

hate to see your credit rating there, goldie.

yeah i've been told this as well, apparently if you avoid it for 5 years it automatically gets wiped.

I'm pretty sure all that stuff sits on your record and if you come to the cops' attention at any point they'll fuck ya with it. (Not sure about the statute of limitations bit.)

I did exactly this, and still didn't get off. They said they couldn't prove the ticket was mine. So I moved house and they didn't catch up with me.

well i recently went for a job and got a police check done...it came up all clear. as for poor credit, i recently applied for a credit card with a reasonable limit, and it got approved...

im sure it must catch with you somehow, sometime... but so far so good.

YarraTramsAreRubbis  said about 1 year ago:

Hey all,

I was googling mad as I got a ticket recently as was sweating madly about it and got some good advice from here so would like to pass on my experience to help my fellow city dwellers.

Well 2 actually as I didnt give out my address and was detained at the station till the police arrived, all a joke, had only been in Oz a week. I felt I was assaulted so I phoned them the next day and registered a complaint, this was rejected as suprisingly my side of the story was different to the 5 inspectors who held me (was pissed as a fart so they kind of took advantage, any other day would have thumped someone who did that to me) but I appealed the tickets, I mean 2 tickets at $172 (1 for no ticket and 1 for not giving my address out, I was staying with a friend and didnt have the address with me) each is a joke and I got let off with a warning which was a huge relief. I enclosed copies of other tickets I bought and orginals of others I had used. I had also recently arrived from the UK and quoted this and reiterated my earlier complaint, and I didnt know how ur system worked here, I had a ticket on me but hadnt validated it.

I since learnt the system and now carry a citysaver with me, a 10 stop multi journey ticket and a weekend saver as well, also got a Miki but that hasnt started yet. So I have to carry 3 types of tickets on me, cant imagine what its like for someone who doesnt speak English, all a bit of a disaster and I really dont like organisations like that, seen the way those inspectors act is shocking, they are not even on commision?! Just jumped up twats who are failures in life and this is the only kick they get, they are to be pitied!

I hate trams, they are so slow and stop everywhere and the ticket inspectors are Nazis so I bought a bike and cycle everywhere and have lost some weight which is good. Sadly it will just get worse so walk with ur feet, get a bike, travel while ur working out and saving money!
