Not all are bad - here are some remakes of classic films that i think cut the proverbial mustard.
The Departed
Breathless
Dawn of the Dead
The Postman Always Rings Twice
Cape Fear
Nosferatu
Solaris
The Beat my Heart Skipped (French movie) taken from an old US film
solaris had so much potential, but something was missing. something big. it wasnt haunting enough or something.
i don't think the remake of solaris is in anyway as good as the original, but i liked that they didn't set out to mimic the original but rather flesh out some of the themes in Tarkovsky's original.
but it could have been sooo much more. the plot is really good. to me it felt like they just tried to get way too arty instead of just making a good movie.
perhaps soderbergh was being too unambitious. i guess i responded to the atmosphere of the film. if a film has a mood to it i will sometimes forgive it its shortcomings. what impressed me most in the remake was soderbergh's use of cross cutting (which rivalled nicholas roeg for visual poetry.)
ive only seen half of the original.
king kong was shit
Hitchcock's second remake of 39 steps was ace.
the hard thing with remakes is that you will always compare them to the original. i think once you compare a movie or raise an expectation it is never going to live up to it.
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake looks pretty awful. So bad that I haven't seen it, because the original is a bit of a fave.
Good Remake - Precinct 13.
yep stay away from the texas chainsaw ones. yukky.
I thought The Omen remake wasn't too bad either.
i dont understand why they remake these movies. why cant they just write new ones?
hollywood isn't creative enough anymore, so they return to the classics and add more special effects. Instant box office hit, because everyone goes to see it, they make billions in the first few days before word gets around that it's really crap.
All those remakes of Japanese horror stuff too (the Ring etc)
wasnt so keen on those japanese remakes myself.
Charlie And The Chocolate Factory.
Crap.
I rest my case.
well, OK, I get the Burton-ness of it, but it just should never have been remade.
ill put a stop to this right now - THE WICKER MAN with NICHOLAS CAGE!!!!!
Paul W S Anderson - what a hack!
When Paul presented his creative vision for this project, we were instantly convinced that this is a story that could be successfully refreshed, yet leave the integrity of the original intact.
Translation: £££££££££$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
I've never seen the original Casino Royale, but I dig the new one.
Ditto for Oceans Eleven
The 60's version of Casino Royale isn't really a proper Bond film. It's more a spoof that uses Bond as the central character. The new version is more faithful to Ian Flemming's book and to the James Bond franchise.
And I haven't seen it but apparantly the original rat pack Oceans Eleven is pretty cheesy (but it couldn't possibly be worse than Oceans 12)
The Famous Five - as adults
Didn't The Comic Strip kill this off?
Someone should do a remake of ''The One Armed Boxer Vs. Flying Guillotine''.

Selma Blair is to star in a US version of Australian comedy Kath and Kim. An initial six episodes will be made for NBC with Blair as daughter Kim and Molly Shannon as mother Kath. The show, whose Australian incarnation has aired on BBC Two, is about the pair's dysfunctional relationship.
NBC had plans to order a pilot first. Channel co-chairman Ben Silverman explained it was instead getting a full season under a new straight-to-series approach aimed at cutting wastage. He said: ''This hilarious new series exemplifies how we are changing the pilot process by ordering shows that we believe in and green-lighting them straight to series. We are confident that this proven international hit will effortlessly translate to American audiences and we couldn't be more excited that Molly and Selma will be playing the leads.''
The series will be produced by Reveille and Universal Media Studios. Gina Riley and Jane Turner, who created and starred in the original, will executive produce with writer Michelle Nader, Rick McKenna and director Paul Feig.

Classic drama Minder could be making a television comeback, with actor Shane Richie ''tipped'' to star in it, a spokesman for TV channel Five has said. Scripts for the show are currently being developed, with a view to commissioning a series later this year.
George Cole, who played dodgy salesman Arthur Daley, and actor Dennis Waterman starred in the original ITV series. Richie's agent Phil Dale said: ''I am currently in negotiations and unable to discuss this further.''
The London-based show, which at its peak was one of ITV's most popular programmes, ran for 15 years. The original theme tune, I Could Be So Good For You, was written by Waterman's then-wife, Patricia, and Gerard Kenny. The track, sung by Waterman himself, went on to reach number three in the UK Top 40 charts in 1980.

werner is absolutely adamant that this isnt a remake. but i think he is just being a dick.
Werner Herzog remaking an Abel Ferrara film with Nicholas Cage?
The mind boggles.
Someone remade the Wicker Man with Nic Cage. I still can't quite comprehend that.
Keanu as Klaatu? This makes me sad.

The showrunner of the forthcoming Survivors remake has stated that the show will address current concerns. Adrian Hodges, who also oversees Primeval, told Sci Fi Wire: ''It confronts our deepest fears when everything else is stripped away. Do you fall apart or fight or retreat?''
The original incarnation of Survivors, which is set in a virus-ravaged Earth, was written by Dalek creator Terry Nation and first shown in 1975. The remake, written by Hodges, will feature Doctor Who actress Freema Agyeman, Bonekickers' Julie Graham and Hotel Babylon's Max Beesley.
Hodges added: ''We completed the pilot and it's ready to premiere, and we're well into shooting the second block.'' Survivors will be screened on BBC One in late 2008.

Fox has commissioned an American version of Jennifer Saunders's sitcom Absolutely Fabulous. The project will be scripted by Saturday Night Live's Christine Zander, while Saunders and Ian Moffitt will be executive producers. It will transport the lead characters Patsy and Edina to Los Angeles, but will follow ''the basic template of the original'', according to Variety.
Rosanne Barr and Carrie Fisher attempted to redo the show for ABC a decade ago but failed, while CBS's short-lived sitcom High Society also alluded to the British series. Absolutely Fabulous, which starred Joanna Lumley, June Whitfield and Julia Sawalha, ran as a regular show in the UK between 1992 and 1995. Further episodes aired in 1996, 2001 and 2003.
'Survivors' begins on BBC1 on 23 November 2008
has anyone seen the original version of the women??? i can't believe anyone had the nerve to touch it - a 1956 remake bombed and i'm guessing the 2008 one will too!
