We're moving to a new place with an aviary set-up in the backyard and we're thinking of getting some chooks for free manure and eggs. All biodynamic n' shit.
Has anyone kept chooks before? Can you tame them? If you get an older chook from the RSPCA will it love you like a surrogate child?
Oh, and does anyone know anything about battery hen rescue in NSW - I'm thinking of emailing Animal Liberation about it but I fear that they might get militant vegan on my arse and berate me for keeping our feathered friends captive and growing large on their ovum.

i keep them in the fridge or freezer
i learned how to hypnotise them at school.
just walk into any battery farm and ask for the saddest looking chooks they have, a lady i know did this, the chooks she got couldnt even jump up on step for a few weeks cos they were so used to being cramped in and their muscles didnt work.. but its ok, they happy chooks now :)
Understood. I normally keep them in some sort of marinade with a lemon up their clacker, but I'm looking for advice on the more active variety at the moment.
have you eaten a bird straight from the farm scallywag? the difference between a steggles and farm bird is remarkable.
won't dumpi be in a constant state of chkkin lust?
it's ace fun, they do get to really like you
my friends parents used to keep them, whenever we'd go outside for a ciggie, they'd come and hang out and try and sit on yr lap
and they talk to you. constantly
Sharptooth: Probably yes, but at the moment his chikkinlust has been temporarily disabled by baykonlust and terkilust. We will keep him away from them anyway.
no i don't think so, but given the choice i will purchase a corn fed or free range bird over a steggles number.
did you know that until factory farming methods became prevalent in the industry, chickens were more expensive than lobster.
in fact, chicken is the only kind meat that has gotten relatively cheaper over time.
i did not know that.
Information:
I just read that you should get smaller chooks because the decrease in egg size is minimal compared to the amount of cashola you'll save on feed.
The end.
Information:
Kiwis produce by far the largest sized eggs in proportion to their body size
Thank you Inactivist. I am also concerned about the "flight risk" of smaller birds though, think I read somewhere that some of the bantam varieties can fly away and annoy neighbours?
I want Australorps I think. They lay lots of eggs and look stylin'.
they stink.
We had a bunch of Silky Bantems when i was a kid. Its best to get them from when they are chicks. Local pack of dogs killed them all though
bantams are good for egg production. my favorite chicken is the "rhode island red". my rhody loved bread and jam. i would have to make sure i put the jam tongue side down for her. used to sit in my lap and go to sleep. i used to dig in the garden and find all the good bugs for them. they used to chortle like crazy. apparently they only have a brain the size of a pea! they woz way clever tho'.
damselfly: awww.
you will only need one or two birds. too much cleaning and looking after. let them roam (safely) during the day and lock them up at night. make sure dogs and cats can't get them.
I want quiet chickens that won't annoy anyone apart from me and Dumpii.

i used to have a pig. they are very lovely animals.
well that was a nice story, toadphoney. very pleasant.
i used to go out with a bloke who had aspergers and he would ask me to do strange things and i would think, is that your aspergers and sometimes i would say, is that your aspergers talking?
I don't think I have aspergers.
well you bought it up.
*brought.
No fool, I mentioned autism. Aspergers is a form of autism. There is a vast spectrum of autistic behaviors, and some theories suggest that everyone is autistic in some way, to some degree.
So you might have rainman on one end, then IT guys on the other.
That is an amazing story toadphoney...seriously made my two minutes that it took to read it. I want party chicken.
try the double down.
9/10
rats? no.
sorry poor punk ass mice? NOT ANYMORE!
needed a watermelon trail
getting some birds today...
so picked up the three lil chicks yesterday...they're gorgeous. The way they huddle up together under the light, its just so..aww
Hutch building shall commence shortly...
The rats are 'ere.
but that could be due to the cold weather as they've breached the interior for the first time.
there is a focus of rat droppings quite close to where my ladies roost at night - and judging by the way they took to that mouse above i woulda thought they'd have a go at any rodent snatchin away at their food.
I had a dream that my chooks died last night... they got too close to a fire and died of smoke inhalation. It was utterly devastating. But then I took another look at them and they were all alive again. Rejoice!
they gettin their adult feathers yet?
just hope ya don't get three males.
Yeah I know, tell me about it. I want eggs goddammit!
They're getting a lot bigger, with the crusty adult feathers popping up. They remind me of pimple-covered teens. Amazing how quickly they grow.
yeah, the awkward gangly stage....
wipes tear from eye
Awkward gangly chickens are the cutest. Especially when they run around waving their wings because they're not used to how big the feathers are yet.
Sooo... two of our 'girls' turned out to be boys. We have a rooster if anyone would like a free one... one of them has already been promised to a good home. Probably going to buy a couple of ready made hens to replace them so Jocelyn Brown doesn't get lonely.
