The Clientele appreciation thread

russiancaravan  said about 5 years ago  or at  2:06AM on Friday, March 16 2007 in music news

Any love for the Clientele?

I stumbled across Strange Geometry last year and still can't stop playing it. So lush and beautiful.

New album, God Save the Clientele, out 8 May in the US. Will Popfrenzy be doing the honours again locally?

More here.

I do like the Clientele. Although their sound doesn't really go anywhere, in the same way you could say that about the Sea and Cake. Still good.

russiancaravan  said about 5 years ago:

Yeah, I guess a little bit samey but when you're on a good thing...

goingblank  said about 5 years ago:

Really enjoyed Strange Geometry. Perfect for listening to in the middle of summer with all the windows open.

shaun  said about 5 years ago:

Strange Geometry was good but there were a few throwaways

popfrenzyhq  said about 5 years ago:

yeah we're releasing their upcoming album here. it sounds wonderful and there's talk of a tour too. the clientele continue to make some of the most beautiful music heard anywhere.

hillsonghoods  said about 5 years ago:

talk of a tour!

i really like the clientele. they really get a mood going. fantastic musicians.

boyleastlikelyto  said about 5 years ago:

Yay. Look forward to the new album and possible tour. If they do come, make sure they swing by Auckland. But you guys at Pop Frenzy are always good with that.

Strange Geometry is an amazing album. I was just listening to it 2 days ago. I always tend to pop it on when I'm sitting on my couch trying to do work.

elvez.  said about 5 years ago:

They are an amazing band. First saw them in 2001, and about to see 'em this wednesday at the 100 club in London. Strange Geometry is their most accomplished album i reckon!

emmy hennings  said about 5 years ago:

Plenty o' love for The Clientele over here. Pulled <em>The Violet Hour</em> off my shelf for the first time in a long while this week. They're the perfect autumn band.

emmy hennings  said about 5 years ago:

mmmm, now why did I do that italic as an html tag? I'm losing my mind.

Cracker!

Temet  said about 5 years ago:

Since K Got Over Me is almost perfect.

pc  said about 5 years ago:

Make sure you track down the song "Summer Crowds in Europe" which is on their Ariadne EP.

southernbelle  said about 5 years ago:

I saw alasdair maclean at the hopetoun a few years ago. he was amazing but the place was EMPTY. such a crime.

columbo  said about 5 years ago:

yeah, the tune 'Since K got over me' is awesome, even if it does borrow heavily from 'Waterloo Sunset' by the Kinks

everyone else is ripping off the classics - why can't these guys, huh?

hillsonghoods  said about 5 years ago:

I can't really hear the Waterloo Sunset in that song, columbo, except kind of vaguely - if it's a ripoff, it's not as obvious as the Flaming Lips' "Fight Test" and "Father and Son".

shunt  said about 5 years ago:

i love his voice more than anything

columbo  said about 5 years ago:

hmm...it's there. but i'm cool with it, 'know?

for me the descending part just before he sings 'i don't think i'll be happy anyway...' always triggers the memory of the descending progression at the start of "waterloo sunset'. it's like i wanna burst into song with "dirty old river..."

which is cool, y'know?...

hillsonghoods  said about 5 years ago:

oh i see what you mean. i guess lots of songs have those kind of descending parts though.

columbo  said about 5 years ago:

yeah, take Mercury Rev's 'deserter's songs' foe example...it's like they went into the writing of that record saying "okay, every song's gotta be like John Lennon's 'mind games' alright?"

uh, which is cool...

Psyclops  said about 3 years ago:

new ep is great - kinda jauntier than previous stuff.

russiancaravan  said about 3 years ago:

Here's the general Clientele one - I found it cos it was in my 'threads started' list.

kazpatafta  said about 1 year ago:

Someone bring them back out please

tugboat  said about 1 year ago:

Yeah, so me and Mel can have candle light dinner, wine and...

TransientRandom  said about 1 year ago:

''When she's tired of dancing'' came on my shuffle this morn. What an awesome song!

kazpatafta  said about 1 year ago:

I was just thinking, for me they haven't released a poor record yet after five of them. Don't know many other bands like that.

Arthurly  said about 1 year ago:

new ep!

Arthurly  said about 1 year ago:

horry shit..''Can't Seem To make You Mine'' is on the telly - as the opening track to some terrible Keanu/Sandra Bollocks flick!

columbo  said about 1 year ago:

absolutely adoring this band at the moment - just last week I found myself putting people onto this band too, who I thought might have already been in the know - and they were totally bowled over.

Winter On Victoria Street playing now :)

columbo  said about 1 year ago:

I'm stunned by how sweet & immaculate No Dreams Last Night is

kazpatafta  said about 1 year ago:

First song up here of Alisdair's new side project with Lupe Núñez-Fernández of Pipas, the album features Damon & Naomi, and Gary Olson (who's playing tonight with The Clean)

columbo  said about 1 year ago:

cool - thanks for the heads-up :)

Arthurly  said about 1 year ago:

From label: Amor de Días (Spanish for “love of days”) is the name of the until-now secret supergroup formed by Alasdair MacLean of the Clientele and Lupe Núñez-Fernández of Pipas.
Over the course of three years, they quietly put together their debut record during evenings and weekends as they called in local friends (Louis Philippe) and visiting musicians (Damon and Naomi, Gary Olson) for sessions, building up the songs’ multifaceted arrangements and vocal harmonies with harps, bouzoukis, strings, recorders, and brass over the core of dual Spanish guitars and the dream imagery of their bilingual lyrics.
The result is a focused, cohesive jewel of chamber pop that reflects a little of Gal Costa and Caetano Veloso’s elegant brand of bossa nova, a bit of Erik Satie’s haunting night music, and a large dose of spooky psychedelic folk. But the beautiful harmony that sings throughout the record makes it all their own.
At times spare and empty, at times rich with instrumental texture, and at times jazz-tinged and hypnotic, Street of the Love of Days rivals anything either Alasdair or Lupe has recorded before.

__v  said about 1 year ago:

thanks arthury/kazpatafta - listening to a track now, sounds sweet

i don't listen to the clientele enough, now's a great time of year to do it

froginasock  said about 1 year ago:

Been listening to a lot of Bonfires On The Heath in the car lately, definitely the right time of year.

__v  said about 1 year ago:

this morning i listened to the violet hour with the songs on shuffle (by accident) and it sounded better than the proper track listing

gonna give bonfires on the heath a go this evening

tugboat  said about 1 year ago:

Alasdair and Lupe joined Damon & Naomi live! Ghost's passport was stolen so they got alasdair to play some guitar.
