is it possible to get broadband internet without having a home phone connected?
we pay $25 in line rental a month but only spend about $5 in phone calls. I wanna get rid of it but wanna keep the net.
know any company that can do this for me?

um why not?..land line is retrogressive. It's a cable /ring telstra.
you need a working phone line that has a dial tone. but there was that thing about wireless..
you could get cable i guess.
i'm going to shut up now.
poison idea
you can get broadband wireless which is expensive, slower and higher latency than adsl
or suck it up and pay the line rental
cable doesn't need a phone, neither does wireless, (or sat, but you ain't going to get that)
i just hate payin line rental for somethin i dont use.
save me!
change your line rental plan so its cheaper
You can get cable but it costs a bit more than the line rental.
You can change telstra plans and switch to a $18 line rental plan instead. Just means calls are more expensive.
Wireless broadband is absolutely awful. Don't go there.
Is Unbundled Local Loop still on the way??
that's when you start using VoIP if you can.
you can get telstra homeline budget- or if you can prove you are hell poor, get an "in place" service- no outgoing calls (000 obviously included), but you get dial tone. Just DON'T get telstra broadband as that will disqualify you from in place service. you have to ask for this- it is not offered.
or go prepaid home line
get foxtel for ya phone line and a cable for internerd
I would love this.
Cable would be sweet.
I'm itching to switch to ADSL2
Telstra Wireless Broadband really isn't so bad.
in fact the prepaid homeline is ideal for share houses..
Can others in my house also start a Telstra Pre-Paid Home service?
Yes, a great feature of Telstra Pre-Paid Home is that other members of your household can easily purchase their own starter pack and connect their Telstra Pre-Paid Home account to the same phone line. Each account holder gets control over their calling costs, so you can avoid arguments and hassles associated with sharing a phone account.
(It just isn't fast, and it's more expensive than ADSL. But beggars can't be choosers.)
get foxtel for ya phone line and a cable for internerd
this makes no sense.

this afternoon i bought a mobile broadband dongle from three for $129 and started an account for 6GB / $39 month NO PLAN - you buy from month to month and can get out any time. if yr usage is lower you can scale down at any point.
excellent deal.
came home and was up and running in 5 minutes.
speed is a HUGE improvement on my previous broadband through bigpond.
what's the fucking catch?
I think I saw the TV ad for this. I thought it looked good.
can't think why there would be a catch..technology moves on, things get cheaper etc?
Loady, did you ever discover a catch?
Is anyone else using mobile broadband through 3 or Vodafone?
My mobile phone use fluctuates, my landline phone use is hardly a blip these days (as opposed to my teenage years... ''Shazza said WHAT to Gazza? gigglegigglegiggle'') but I'd appreciate being able to internet wherever with my laptop. As long as the bees don't get lost in the microwaves.
Okay kids... feeling like it's time to move away from iinet after a few years.. their deals are more expensive than others and their changes to their peak/off peak times were the final straw.
Can anyone recommend a better carrier?
I'm thinking TPG? NAKED ADSL2.. we need at least 60 gig peak a month.
Currently paying $69.99 for 50gig peak/50gig offpeak.. though the off peak is redundent cause who wan't a computer running all night??
TPG are great if you don't need your hand held during the setup process. And don't even bother calling their support line.
Having said that, I've used them for six years and never had a major issue.
hmmm
Internode comparison for their cheapest plans:
10GB ADSL2+ bundled with phone: $60 pm + call costs
10GB ADSL2+ naked: $50 pm
10GB ADSL2+ naked + VOIP: from $55 pm + call costs
Hmmm
expensive. Just signed with TPG..churned on 18month contract for free..
Super Fast / 180GB5(90GB+90GB) $49.99 per month.
shaped to 1Mbps/1Mbps
What are their peak/off peak times, knomadix? And do they count uploads?
hey knomadix, did you have to have a phone line installed ?
we've got bigpond naked dsl at the moment and no phone line. complete rip off. looking into optus phone + 120gb = $80. that looks decent.. but that deal looks better.
fail... can't churn naked adsl to naked adsl...only normal adsl.
Lozz we have naked adsl.
waiting for a call back but I'm betting on some downtime in the changeover.
Yeah, we discovered that. iiNet will waive the payout fee, but you have to pay a reconnection fee. There'll be downtime for sure.
so there will still be a connection fee of $79.95 for naked ADSL2+
Naked ADSL2+ 180GB (90GB peak+90GB offpeak) $59.99per month on 18 Months contract with $79.95 setup.
10-20 days downtime!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Do they count uploads, knomadix? And what are the peak/off-peak times?
I've stuck with iinet now.. they just added an extra 10 gig on and 10 gig off to their existing plans. (not announced) Still not the best deal but I can't go that long with no net in a house of 4.
here is your TPG deals for naked adsl
assuming if you need to enter your phone number you do need a phone line to begin with.. grrr
no.. you'll always have a phone number allocated to the line. should be the same number it's always been
You'll be lucky if it's only that. I had a fucking horror reconection gap of about three months, once.
