do you volunteer?

freaksandgeeks  said about 5 years ago  or at  4:52PM on Wednesday, March 14 2007 in chat

As well as running programs for volunteers at work, I'm interested in doing some more volunteer work of my own.

Most of mine has been welfare kinda stuff, crisis counselling, CASA, running support groups etc etc. It would be nice to do something that didn't involve dealing with people's problems ( I do that at work). I've done a few radiothons and queer things but it would be nice to do something a bit more ongoing. Planting trees isn't really an option at the moment due to injuries...wouldn't mind teaching english.

If you volunteer, i'm interested in hearing what you do and why?

All the volunteer things I've tried to do have always involved me giving money in some way..
and when I've got the time to volunteer, I'm poor.

Volunteered at some Sydney City events. They're fun.

I used to be ms. super volunteer! - to the point where I was having difficulty paying rent - so the paid work had to overtake...

yep quite a bit actually

I'm living and working in Lao PDR as a volunteer right now ... for lots of reasons, the main one being that I won the lottery being born a white, caucasian male in a first world, industrialized country and I wanted to give something back.

freaksandgeeks  said about 5 years ago:

well if anyone has any suggestions...would be nice to do something which doesn't involve suicide interventions...

socks  said about 5 years ago:

I used to. Ran out of time. :-( I try and make up for it by donating monthly to currently four charitables/NGOs.

Ohyeah  said about 5 years ago:

why not volunteer for infrastruture type things freaks?

redlips  said about 5 years ago:

I'll go back to volunteering - just needed a break...

number none  said about 5 years ago:

I've done only a couple of small design things in the past for charity events. I wouldn't mind doing more of that if the cause outways the politics of it and I have time. Couldn't ever see myself manning the phones but thats just me

SheikYerbouti  said about 5 years ago:

I do about 12 hrs a week volunteer work, sometimes in summer if there are big fires I'll go for a week or two of 12 hr days, as a volunteer. I work in the same field so it's just something I do.

triptolemus  said about 5 years ago:

plant trees freaks (I forgot...MrsTripto & I have done that too).

svelteslacks  said about 5 years ago:

freaksandgeeks  said about 5 years ago:

SheikYerbouti  said about 5 years ago:

triptolemus  said about 5 years ago:

simmer down everyone. sometimes we write things without thinking things through. everything works out in the end.

kuroneko  said about 3 years ago:

Indeed, Ohyeah. This is a good thread for good people. Elaine - try this thread or perhaps this one.

Now, back to the volunteering....

On another note - to the girl that came over last night to ask if it was ok to pick nectarines off the tree in my neighbors yard, can i just say RAWR! She said she lives behind us across the laneway. I didn't even get her name.

Ehem after a year break, can we get back to Volunteering?
I would love to hear from those who have volunteered with the elderly, or more specifically with Wesley Do Care
The website is a little dated, and I've tried 3 different emails to get through (the first 2 bounced back)

shineslikerubies  said about 2 years ago:

project-rabbit, i can not help you with that.

but i have just started an all-girls mountain bike group in newcastle. am not sure whether it quite counts in this thread because it's not anything really official, but so far we have had one event where 12 girls - most of whom didn't know any of the others - turned out for a ride together.

working with the local mountain biking club, it looks like we are also going to get some help to run womens-specific skills clinics, and be able to do a few other things to continue to help this network grow.

the thing that i am really excited with this is that it's proving to be a really good vehicle for getting reasonably new mums whose partners all ride back into exercise and meeting new people. all their fellas are looking after the kids etc while these women come riding, so that their wives can do something a little bit good for themselves.

i don't know how it will develop, but i am really excited by the way it seems to be building into a really nice and inclusive network of and for women that might promote health, and community.

i did volunteer work for a mentally disabled kids a few years back. when i say i volunteered, i went on a wednesday for three weeks and played games with them. like that one where you put cards on the floor and then flip them over. it's a memory game. they played it on survivor last week i think. anyway, i had to stop on account of my good looks as i was getting hit on all the time by the dudes. all up it was pretty good for my self esteem.

Project-Rabbit  said about 2 years ago:

Rubies, congrats! That sounds awesome, we have a similar thing in Melbs set up by another chat, called Ladies who Leisure. Which I've wanted to go to but haven't yet...

ashthetenth  said about 2 years ago:

Kinda reluctant to bump this thread due to nastiness but...

I'm finally in a position where I have the same days off each week and every Saturday and Monday I'm free!

Anyone have any recommendations for places to volunteer? Looking into SAIL but wouldn't mind knowing what else is out there.

CryMeARiver  said about 2 years ago:

Whitelion
New Hope foundation

SAIL is a great program, know loads of young people who've been through the program and have really benefited.

JudyDickslap  said about 2 years ago:

My job pays so poorly that it feels like I'm volunteering.

Digital  said about 2 years ago:

I am doing after school homework support for kids at Auburn Youth Centre. No dramas so far. Waiting for my first to happen.

Mo  said about 2 years ago:

that's awesome digital - how did you get involved with that - i would love to do something like that

been looking into mentoring programs etc

Kaylene  said about 2 years ago:

I do unpaid work experience with a designer. I guess that's not quite so noble.

Digital  said about 2 years ago:

One of my friends is managing the place. It sort of started by me asking him because I was wallowing in shall i say, under-employedness.
It gets me out of the house, dealing with some interesting kids (a lot of somalian refugees), and i guess from a less than altruistic point of view, it can be added to my cv, as i'm looking to get a DipEd in the future.

Spidey  said about 1 year ago:

Saw a new Government advert on the telly box about volunteering and now fer some reason i cant find it on the internetz. Anyone ?
