60's Surf Music

MidnightMinnie  said about 5 years ago  or at  7:08AM on Sunday, March 4 2007 in chat

What were the best / hit surf songs of the 1960's? I know there are so many but I can't remember the names off the top of my head...

I know The Atlantics and Dick Dale were some of the best artists of that genre, but can't remember the titles of their hits (besides Misirlou)..

Reverb  said about 5 years ago:

don't forget the Ventures!

MidnightMinnie  said about 5 years ago:

P.S.: Im talking about the (mostly instrumental) songs that had that twangy guitar... not stuff like The Beach Boys.

Reverb  said about 5 years ago:

wiki says -

* Misirlou, Dick Dale, 1962.
* Walk Don't Run '64, The Ventures, 1964.
* Apache, The Shadows, 1960.
* Pipeline, The Chantays, 1963.
* Bombora (single), The Atlantics, 1963.
* Wipe Out, The Surfaris, 1962.
* Bulldog, The Fireballs, 1959.

i love this stuff, i've only got two compilations that my uncle made for me, neither have track-listings so i don't know the who's who of it

if there were more of it around it might become one of my favouritest genres

los straitjackets are good, not sure if 60's.

santo & johnny sleep walk is a great great song!

Modi  said about 5 years ago:

And the Atlantics are Aussies. I saw them play a coupleof years ago. Okay, maybe ten... Fuck I'm old.

Saw Dick Dale too, touringon the back of Pulp Fiction.

runoutgroove  said about 5 years ago:

mrs runoutgroove and i used to do a surf music radio show - there were tons of really cheap compilation CDs with stacks of really great old instrumental tracks. The Surf & Drag one is pretty good but there are plenty more.

there was also a guy from Gladesville (?) in Sydney who used to produce these books/magazines with more obscure artists. really great stuff and some of the books are amazing (self published things just photcopies and bound). some of the magazines came with compilation CDs too.

i'll try and dig out some details if you're interested.

They might not be from the 60's but The Bambi Molesters finally have a new album coming out. New song is very Morricone.

coolestjerk  said about 2 years ago:

The Venutres aren't a surf band, they're an instrumental band!

Bruce Johnston (who ended up replacing Brian Wilson on bass in the live version of the Beach Boys) has a pretty decent solo surf record called Surfin Round the World.
The Atlantics get really good when they play weirder surf shit on the later two LPs (Now It's Stompin Time and The Explosive Sound of..). The singles after that when they had vocalists are totally devoid of surf sounds but still awesome - they made a pretty good tough garage and tough instruental group as much as they did as a surf band. They never really nailed psychedelia, except on the the track Take a Trip un der the name The Gift of Love.

I'll listen through some 45s and think of more awesome surf tunes.

Pex  said about 2 years ago:

Bambi Molesters are awesome!

for some reason there was heaps of surf bands in former Yugoslavia in the 60s, all of them heavily influenced by the Shadows...

if you track one record down, make sure it's the first 7''EP by Zlatni Decaci - 4 tracks of pure surf gold!

buddychilzelski  said about 2 years ago:

Pex - below is a link to a 6CD box set that came out a few years ago that compiles a lot of those bands.

Pex  said about 2 years ago:

I've got it already, not in the box set format, if you know what I mean ;)

some trully great stuff there...

Bambis just played in Belgrade, I'm trying to get some recording of it...

goldfoot  said about 1 year ago:

If you like instrumental surf music check out this new EP by Sydney band The Atom Bombs

http://atombombs.bandcamp.com/album/atom-bombs-7

rigid  said about 1 year ago:

You should all check out the Strummin' Mental comps. There's 5 LPs or 2 CDs that gather most of the LPs. Volume 5 is incredible. Worth it just for Ron Thompson's ''Switchblade'' and Alfredo Mendietta's berserk cover of Link's ''Chicken Run''. It totally kills the original!

Godzilla  said about 1 year ago:

I'm guessing that those Farm tracks that Hazardman listed is the band that changed it's name to midnight oil after the singer got rid of his long hair
