anyone going to see these guys? some people write them off as little more than a thinking man's coldplay, but i reckon there's more soul in one song of guy garvey's treacly voice and incisive lyrics than in la martin's whole back catalogue. every Elbow album is great, though Leaders of The Free World is a bit patchy. one of my favourite bands.
Should be a tits show at the POW.
"You little sod, i love your eyes... be everything to me tonight."

Seen em twice.
First time was great, second time was boring.
i've only seen them in an in-store, acoustic.
very keen for this, me.
wow, no love for some of manchester's most awesome songwriters.
is there no chat going to this tonight?
I'm going sunday.
Hardly know their stuff
I hope I'm pleasantly surprised
current album patchy-good (but has some of their best ever tracks in Station Approach and Mexican Standoff) first two albums pure gold from start to finish.
i'll go out on a limb and say i reckon guy garvey is the best lyricist (when writing about relationships) in the UK today. he also has a sky-filling voice that is soulful without any of that manipulative, bullshit melodramatic over-emotionalism that you hear in contemporary 'R&B', say.
the production and arrangements on their albums are just beautiful, understated, too.

I did the same thing. I was. Beautiful live. But I still don't know their stuff, so I decided not to go again.
Nicko, what was their breakthrough hit?
Is it on the first or second album?
Hmm, never had a big 'hit' but JJJ used to flog 'Any Day Now' from debut 'Asleep In The Back' - great, great album, btw. took them 8 years in all to release, as their studio burnt to the ground halfway through recording...
they started life as subsub, who had an early 90s hit with 'Ain't No Love, Ain't No Use'.
thankfully, they had a sharp direction change.
Any Day Now and Newborn were the hits of the first album Asleep In The Back
Sub Sub became doves, not Elbow
They are closely linked though; Guy Garvey sang backing vocals on the Some Cities LP, and Elbow supported doves on their UK tour for that album.
yeah, Newborn is one of my favourite songs of all time - desert island top five, easily.
didn't think it got much attention here, though.
do they still have a profile in the UK, HEB? last i saw them was as one of the (ahem) stopgaps in the appaling Winterbottom shag-flick, 9 Songs.
oops, re- doves; love them, too. prob why i was confused.
they've both worked a lot with Andy Votel, haven't they?
...and the studio burning down thing was the doves too. Maybe we need an underrated Mancurian band thread.
Independent Woman - covered by **Elbow
i have an elbow 7" but i don't like it. i didn't realise they were still going.
oops.
i was sure that was elbow...
gah. loved em both, discovered them both around the same time - sorry for the confuzzlement.
def two of my favourite bands. i thought the doves show at the forum a couple years back was pretty great.
In the UK they've not been around much, as they've been recording the fourth LP, which is due out in the next few months.
I wonder if Johnny Elbow's mum will let him go and see them?
Sub Sub
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sub Sub were a British dance act from Manchester, England, comprising Jimi Goodwin, Andy Williams and Jez Williams.
The threesome met at school and became regulars at The Hacienda. They had moderate success in the early 1990s, including the single "Ain't No Love (Ain't No Use)" (featuring guest vocalist Melanie Williams) which reached #3 in the UK Singles Chart. After a fire destroyed their recording studio in 1996 they started anew as the more indie-oriented act Doves in 1998.
TITS!
that is something to look forward to, cheers HEB.
(obvs know this information is out there, just don't actually trawl a lot of music sites.)

Only thing stopping me from buying tickets. And being an old bastard who doesn't think he'll cope backing up Elbow with Pulp the next night.
$80 is a bit rich too.
Whinge, whinge.
anyone got spares/unusables for tonight? Changed my mind and have to see them again, bugger the venue.
Had free tickets offered and then had the rug pulled from under my feet. Not happy ''Palace'' Theatre. Really not not happy.
Note to self, when playing at said venue in August, vomit wherever you can.
saw them last night, they were awesome, the sound was great.
Last night at the enmore was AMAZIBG. I'm not even going to correct that.
Best shows I have seen - so,so good. Hopefully someone brings them back out again and soon!

Seen them on all four previous tours, but a bit too pricey for my tastes, considering they haven't released anything in the time since their most recent visit.
Elbow With The BBC Concert Orchestra
Sunday, January 29 2012, 11:15pm
ABC2 now
Recorded in the world famous Abbey Road Studios, critically acclaimed band Elbow teamed up with the BBC Concert Orchestra to perform their entire award-winning album 'The Seldom Seen Kid'.
This is an amazing concert - beautifully arranged! Would have loved to have been in the audience. Might have to watch it again to warm up for March!
That was lovely to fall asleep to last night. Although, I wish I didn't have to look at Elbow.
2nd show announced at tivoli sun 25th march
Odd, considering the first show hasn't sold out after being on sale for two months. Or perhaps not, cause now I'm thinking of going twice.
