iPod advice

Passions  said about 1 year ago  or at  10:17PM on Monday, February 26 2007.

i am too tired to trawl through the manual right now, so i'm lazily poking in the direction of the m&n hyper-nerd brains' trust instead.

i want to be able to compile a playlist for impending celebratory mahem using the 'on-the-go' playlist function on the iPod (thus enabling me to accomplish this task on public transport to and from work). unfortunately, it seems that each time the iPod switches off any playlist i've saved is lost.

what am i doing wrong? is there another way of doing this? or do i have to spend hours on my computer at home using Anapod to accomplish the playlist task?

blake3030  said about 1 year ago:

Hmmm, mine is different. If I make an on the go playlist and then switch it off it will be saved as "on the go" and if I try to make a new one it will call itself "on the go 1" and the next "on the go 2" and so on.

Can't help sorry.

astralwerkor  said about 1 year ago:

same as blake. you lose the playlist every time passions?

Passions  said about 1 year ago:

yup, every time. it now just says 'on the go' and when i try to go in, hoping against hope that the list's hidden somewhere, it mocks me by giving the instructions for selecting songs.

tell me i'm doing something obvious wrong. it's highly likely.

Passions  said about 1 year ago:

i put together a whole wack of music before noticing this issue. bugger fuck, wot.

kuroneko  said about 1 year ago:

I don't even have an iPod, but I assume you're doing this:

  1. Create an On-The-Go playlist by selecting a song, genre, artist, composer, or album and press and hold the iPod’s middle Select button until you see the entry blink.

  2. Travel to the Playlists screen, select the On-The-Go entry at the bottom of the screen, and press Select.

  3. Scroll to the bottom of the resulting On-The-Go screen, select Save Playlist, and press the Select button.

  4. In the Save screen that appears, select Save Playlist, and press Select.

The playlist will be saved as Playlist 1. Subsequent playlists created in this way will increment by one—Playlist 2, Playlist 3, Playlist 4, and so on. You’re now ready to create a new On-The-Go playlist and save it in the manner described above.

Make sure to save the playlist after you create it on your iPod. While there is a Save Playlist command, you need to play a song--any song--for iPod to save the list to its hard disk. If you don't save the playlist by playing a song, it could be lost if you don't use iPod for more than 36 hours.

williammiller  said about 1 year ago:

Um, is it called something else? I think the On the Go list just the instructions. The playlist becomes On the Go 1 or something.

svelteslacks  said about 1 year ago:

ha, i love kuro's disclaimer in the beginning, then her launch into the most technical answer yet.

you be wise lady.

i think this is the answer - this is the only part of the process i wasn't doing. will try tomorrow.

thank you so much Kuro! you... light up my life... etc.

Passions  said about 1 year ago:

nup - still not working. the playlist 'saves', but then if i put my iPod to recharge, the playlist is lost.

i am losing valuable compilation-making time here, peoples.

any other solutions?

hyperfuzz  said about 1 year ago:

i remember on the older ipods you couldn't save on the go playlists... but that's probably not it. what generation is it? and is the firmware updated to the latest model?

selttiks  said about 1 year ago:

there's an 'on-the-go' playlist?!

hmm.. serves me right for never reading the instructions.

sorry to be of no help :(

Passions  said about 1 year ago:

5th gen, hyperfuzz.

what the dickens is 'firmware'?

i went to stay in an Amish community and all i got was this lousy ludditis

hyperfuzz  said about 1 year ago:

like, the software that runs on the ipod... i think itunes tells you if you need to... anyway, you can always try saving the playlist on the ipod, then (before you recharge it), jump onto itunes and change the names of the playlists, or something...

are they just dissapearing if the ipod goes to sleep?

yrspiritflares  said about 1 year ago:

hmmm, odd. did you check williammiller's suggestion?

there are different on-the-go playlists - on-the-go 1,2,3,etc. the initial on-the-go list only ever shows instructions.

not sure, but i think each time you sync to iTunes the on-the-go list no. increments.

recharging shouldn't affect it.

Passions  said about 1 year ago:

i have anapod

the playlist doesn't show when i fire anapod up

i cannot find the playlists saved anywhere else on the ipod

i am doomed

and angry

and a little pissed (work function, no food)

AND STILL AT WORK

greentypewriter  said about 1 year ago:

does anybody know a place that does ipod repairs in melbourne? hi passions!

Passions  said about 1 year ago:

i don't, but surely some other nerdinista will.

hi greentypewriter!!

MidnightMinnie  said about 1 year ago:

No idea where my instruction booklet is - but excuse my ignorance - what is the diff between a normal playlist and 'On the Go'?

Passions  said about 1 year ago:

'on the go' is constructed 'on the go'.

helpful, huh.

no, really, you can construct an 'on the go' playlist just by using your iPod wherever you are (ie without having to plug the ruddy thing into a computer and use iTunes / Anapod etc).

DOA = dead on arrival

richieramone  said about 2 months ago:

So, just to recap and ensure we’ve got the best solution (feel free to comment / provide another solution, yeah yeah “stop DJing crap music etc”) to the following situation:

I do some regular DJing and partly want the iPod so I don't have to carry so many bloody records and CDs with me each time. Unfortunately, much of the music I play whilst DJing is stuff I'm not at all interested in hearing. Ever. Again.

I'm wondering - if I have these crap songs / albums in my iTunes and therefore my iPod, is there some way I can keep them in a folder or something similar, ensuring I don't have to see them when I scroll through the iPod?

The 3 suggestions to date have been:

Anonymous - prepending everything thats shite with ''zzz'' at the front (for albums, songs and artists) so when you scroll through it normally, they're at the bottom.
Also mucking around with smart playlists will help, long as when you're on shuffle for personal usage, you're shuffling within the playlist.

CONS - only problem with not using smart playlists is that you'll end up with your crap mixing with your non crap if you pick shuffle.

Adam - Another way would be to rename the ''artist'' field for all the crap to the same thing in iTunes, like ''SHITE''.
Then, when you go into yr ipod it'll all be in the same folder. Problem will be that you'll have to rename the ''song'' field to something like ''Artist - Song''.

Hillsong - there's a setting on the iPod called ''hide compilations'' or something like that - when you view things by artist, it's used to avoid polluting the list with innumerable artists from compilations. To make it work you have to mark the mp3s as part of a compilation on iTunes. I reckon you can just use this setting for your purposes.
Oh yeah I forgot about hide compilations. Just select all the shite, and mark the ''Album'' field the same thing so it appears to be a compilation. Anon, wouldn't it just come up as one massive, shitty compilation?

CONS (from Anon) - won't that break actual compilations?

I think Hillsong’s “hide compilations” suggestion might be the front-runner to date. Any other suggestions?

What will the sound quality of your mp3s be like through a big system, compared to CDs? Especially if they're at 192kps or less? iPod can't play wav/flac or other lossless audio formats can it?

tabula rasa  said about 2 months ago:

Following on from what anon said above re smart playlists, here's a method Richie:

  • Create 2 smart playlists like DJ Stuff and _My Music
  • Make the rule for the DJ Stuff smart playlist something like ''and comments contains DJ''
  • Make the rule for the _My Music playlist ''and comments does not contain DJ''
  • Put the letters DJ into the comments section of the songs/albums that belong in your DJ Stuff list

and voilà, you'll never see any DJ Stuff when you browse via your _My Music playlist in iTunes or iPod

i feel so materialistic wanting a new ipod when my 30gb is still working perfectly fine, but overfilled and now i've lost that magical ability to call up ANY song i could think of and own.

trueschoolalumni  said about 2 months ago:

Would not recommend DJing with an iPod. Unless you're ripping at 320kps, will sound shit on a good system.

littlearch  said about 2 months ago:

asthma said 19 hours ago: ugh.

same to you. why don't you just ''borrow'' someone else's?

I'm sure he said it was sounding shit regardless of compression or sound system.

richieramone  said about 2 months ago:

Haha tinyman!
Thanks all (you too Tabula) for your suggestions.
I was planning on using EAC V0 or at least 256kps for rips.

shaun  said about 1 month ago:

I had a problem with my ipod a few days ago. The headphone port was damaged so music was only coming from one earpiece on my headphones. So I took it to be repaired (in warranty) and they just replaced it! Surely something like that is very simple to fix?

tinyman  said about 1 month ago:

i had an apple mighty mouse where the trackball was a bit wonky and they replaced the whole thing too. probably just needed to open it up and clean the insides.

Digital  said about 1 month ago:

shaun, they will probably use the other parts for refurbs, they don't just chuck it in the bin. They swap it over mostly for your convenience.

richieramone, i would suggest mucking around with genres ie. 2 genres, 1 ''shit'', 2 ''good :)'' and using the browser to select either to listen to music.
