The Cold Chisel Thread

williammiller  said about 5 years ago  or at  1:34AM on Saturday, February 24 2007 in music

How is it this thread does not already exist?

Chorgirl just came on the ipod. An amazing track.

There's a Chisel tribute out soon. I'd love to hear it.

I could listen to Mossy play guitar all day. One of the greatest, most tasteful guitar players Australia has ever produced.

Did jimmy die from the operation?

williammiller  said about 5 years ago:

I think Barnesy pisses on this legacy. Chisel were like the Faces to Barnsey's Rod.

So many great songs. Such amazing musicianship. Four Walls!!!

Charles  said about 5 years ago:

Good thread this one.

All you indie left wingers hate Cold Chisel but you really just don't like Barnes' solo career and the fucking song Khe Sahn. Can't say I blame you really.

But don't forget the great music this band made, pinkos. Its buried away on all those Mushroom releases! Ian Moss is a true musician. As is Don Walker and Steve Prestwich.

So get fucked all you snot haired Brunswick poofters because Cold Chisel made some brilliant music.

mkhammer  said about 5 years ago:

Quit honestly, I think barnsey and cold chisel suck ass!!! I was just trying to make conversation.

Charles  said about 5 years ago:

And they made much better music and touched a lot more hearts than you faggots will ever do....put together and multiplied by some huge figure that only Mapooz and Modi could understand.

So fuck the lot of you Chisel bashers.

mkhammer  said about 5 years ago:

I don't come from brunswick.

Charles  said about 5 years ago:

Yeah, standard form chat responses...one or two words. BFW you poorly educated fucking slackjawed knuckle dragging chowderheaded yokels.

mkhammer  said about 5 years ago:

I'm not educated, What gave you that idea. I just know good music when i hear it.

williammiller  said about 5 years ago:

Yeah I don't care if you hate them. I hate bogan culture as much as anyone, but I don't see it in Cold Chisel. They never promoted that bullshit so caricultured by Working Class Man.

The film clip for Cheap Wine is one of the greatest things ever

mkhammer  said about 5 years ago:

Hey will, I don't mind some of cold chisel. I think it's jimmy barnes i hate.

bxckxtrxdxr  said about 5 years ago:

charles dwad = getfucked.

plenny of chisel threads on monoszzzzzzzzzz

bxckxtrxdxr  said about 5 years ago:

Cold Chisel:

Ian Moss sounds like Donny Hathaway when he sings "Rosaline"

And, get this, fucking Jimmy "heartbypass2bottlesovvoddyaday" Barnes sounds like Aretha Franklin when he sings "Just How Many Times"!!!

No bullshit, fuckers!

williammiller  said about 5 years ago:

that's understandable. I hate Barnsey too

I also hate Liam Gallagher, rod stewart, david lee roth, vince neil...

all those dudes were on fire and at their best when they fronted great bands (and didn't pretend to be songwriters - just fucking kick ass front men who fucking belted it out).

mkhammer  said about 5 years ago:

I do believe that bxck. But i can't stand his voice so I'm not going to find out. He should of died in surgery. Wait a minute, that's a bit harsh he should of lost his voice.

bxckxtrxdxr  said about 5 years ago:

yeah, that dude is shit, but, because of this thread, i just put early chisel on the puter, and you should hear barnesey's sweetasfuk voice!

bxckxtrxdxr  said about 5 years ago:

on the records up to East i guess.

When he cuts in from Mossy on "One Long Day" FFS!!!

Cold Chisel return with new drummer

  • Ross Purdie

COLD Chisel have drafted in American musician Charley Drayton to help record new material following the death of drummer Steve Prestwich in January.

The Australian rockers announced today that they are ready to return to the studio with a view to completing their first album since 1998's The Last Wave Of Summer with Drayton, also drummer for Aussie rock band the Divinyls and husband of lead singer Chrissy Amphlett.

Confirming recording sessions for late March and June, Cold Chisel keyboardist Don Walker painted a tough few months, but said Prestwich, who died from a brain tumour on January 16 aged 56, would be pleased the band is moving on.

''We'd already recorded a number of new songs with Steve prior to his passing plus all five of us have written songs over the summer with the intention of recording more this year,'' Walker said.

''Hopefully Charley can help us complete the work we began together. Steve was totally into everything we'd been planning for 2011 so while the last few months have been very difficult to deal with, we all feel that he would want us to complete the plans we made together.''

Drayton has also played drums for some of the world's leading musicians including Keith Richards, Iggy Pop, Simon & Garfunkel, the B-52s and Neil Young.

While he is a friend of Cold Chisel's remaining members - Walker, Jimmy Barnes, Ian Moss and Phil Small - the band say their earnings will continue to be split five ways, with Prestwich's share going to his children.

Cold Chisel are planning a major re-release of their back catalogue over winter including the first digital release of their recorded works.

''As part of that we will also include some great things from back in the day that haven't been released before,'' said Barnes in a statement issued from the band's label Warner Music.

''And if these new tunes come together in the way that we're hoping we will make a plan for their release sometime later.''

Chisel set to rip it up again
Karl Quinn
June 27, 2011 - 4:00PM

Australian rock legends Cold Chisel will release 56 new and/or rare tracks when they reissue their entire back catalogue next month.

Previously unheard (on record) tracks include covers of The Doors’ Light My Fire, the 1950s track Rip It Up (first released in 1956 by both Bill Hailey and The Comets and Little Richard), and Randy Newman’s Guilty — all sourced from bootleg fan recordings — plus a raft of demo tracks and a Live at the Wireless recording for 2JJ (precursor to Triple J) in 1977.

There is also one particular rarity, a song called Bal A Versailles that features chief songwriter and keyboardist Don Walker on lead vocals.

Trawling through the archive of material has been enlightening for the four remaining band members, Walker, singer Jimmy Barnes, guitarist Ian Moss and bassist Phil Small (drummer Steve Prestwich died of a brain tumour in January).

‘‘There are songs and performances we’d completely forgotten about,’’ Barnes said via press release today. ‘‘There were times we said, ‘Did we really play that?’ Some tracks here we only ever played once or twice and there are demos of songs that turned into something else. It’s been a real trip through our past and reminded us that we were OK for a rock and roll band.’’

Cold Chisel formed in the working-class Adelaide suburb of Elizabeth in 1973, and released their self-titled debut album in 1978. Among its stand-out tracks was the single Khe Sanh, which commercial radio refused to play because the line ‘‘Their legs are often open/But their minds are always closed’’ was deemed offensive. The songs has since become an unofficial national anthem in certain circles, including the dressing room of the Australian cricket team.

The band’s first major commercial success came with their third album, East, in 1980.

The 1981 double album Swingshift captured much of the band’s ferocious live energy and was followed by the equally successful Circus Animals in 1982.

In 1983, shortly before the release of their Twentieth Century album, the band broke up, but reformed briefly in the late 1990s for the Last Wave of Summer album and tour. It has since reformed for occasional one-off gigs, including the Boxing Day tsunami benefit concert in 2005.

The band’s albums have sold more than 3 million copies since 1983 and will now be reissued, including in downloadable digital form for the first time.

The physical versions will include a CD of remastered songs plus a second disc featuring bonus video material of the band — including live performances, interviews and the band’s infamous appearance on the 1981 Countdown awards, when it utterly destroyed the set — from the period in which the albums were recorded.

No announcement has yet been made, but the band is expected to release a new album in the next year, with a tour likely to follow.
