Field Music - Tones of Town

russiancaravan  said about 5 years ago  or at  11:41PM on Wednesday, February 21 2007 in music

I downloaded Field Music's latest album Tones of Town from emusic after reading some glowing reviews but it's not doing it for me yet.

Drowned in Sound called it "ridiculously clever, catchy as hell and as perfect a pop album as you’re ever likely to hear."

Anyone else heard it? Does it just need a few more listens or is the hype unjustified?

I'm a huge Field Music fan caravan. Love their debut album. Haven't heard Tones of Town yet but I saw a video for the single on youtube. Have to say also that it didn't do much for me first time around. Last year I was raving to everyone about the last album... We'll see.

hiponion  said about 5 years ago:

Pretty fine album. Definitely some great tunes on there.

paraphernalia74  said about 5 years ago:

Hate to sound old fashioned but can I buy it yet? Or do I have to Download it?

russiancaravan  said about 5 years ago:

Mushroom website says Oz release 3 March, paraphernalia, so not too many sleeps to go. I'm listening to it now. I'm kind of digging "In Context".

Cool, I'll try tracking down the first album on your recommendation.

paraphernalia74  said about 5 years ago:

The first album is incredible caravan. Not one bad song on the album. I went to see them when I was at SXSW last year and their show was cancelled. Very disappointing.

russiancaravan  said about 5 years ago:

That would have sucked (the cancellation, I mean, not SXSW). Maybe if the success this album seems to be having O/S is repeated here, they'll pay us a visit.

russiancaravan  said about 5 years ago:

worksafe, you got any faves on T of T for repeated listening? I want to like this, damnit. I need an album that will make me smile and want to listen it endlessly.

paraphernalia74  said about 5 years ago:

Sorry to butt in Russian, but if you want an album to smile to get "Love and Youth" by Jenny Wilson (presuming you don't already have it). Such a great album.

russiancaravan  said about 5 years ago:

Hey, not at all, p, I appreciate the suggestion. I do have "Love and Youth" and that was a grower too, I have to say. Some fantastic, beautiful songs on there like "Common Around Here". If you haven't seen it, check out the video for "Let my Shoes lead me Forward" on YouTube.

Ha ha, I'm x posting in my own thread!

No more Field Music (the band)?

** There's been a great deal of talk...

...regarding the future of Field Music, and very little of it has come directly from us. Contrary to some of the things that have been ''quoted'' (ahem!), we're not sick of our music, we're not sick of each other (''the cracks are beginning to show!'') and we're not ''splitting up'', mostly because it just doesn't work like that. What I can say with some certainty is that we're not greatly enamoured of the machinations and mechanisms which go along with being tagged as an indie band, and with the expectations which follow as a result. (It's maybe worth pointing out that that dissatisfaction applies both to the word ''indie'' and the word ''band''.) It just so happens that in order to play our songs to all you folks out there, we became a band, which has been a lot of fun at times (and led to us making a better second record). However, the restrictions inherent in such a situation can begin to chafe a little bit, especially when those restrictions include a dose or two of compromise and/or conformity, and also when they greatly affect how much time the three of us can spend writing songs, working on new ideas and generally getting better at what we do.

So, we've decided simply not to make any immediate plans for Field Music The Band. We're still going to make music together, because we like doing that, but we've no intention of sticking to any strict format with regards to what we record and what we release. In essence, Field Music is just the name of a company, whose directors happens to be me, Peter and Andy - there doesn't seem to be any reason why Field Music the company can't produce and release records that aren't necessarily by Field Music The Band. And we're hoping that Field Music The Company can be much more productive than Field Music The Band ever managed to be.

Even though we've only just begun to pass the last of the engagements clogging up the Field Music diary, we've already managed to get our hands very dirty with a bunch of new projects. I've said in a couple of interviews this year that our big ambition is to find a way to get into the habit of being creative. Being a band in the traditional sense made that very difficult but we're all confident that this new sideways-stepping venture will mean that we manage to produce more really good music than we would otherwise have been able to do. And then, when we run out of money and ideas we'll do a huge reunion tour and make a shit comeback album.

Cheers all

**

From their myspace site.

Earl Brutus  said about 2 years ago:

Seems their 'demise' was a tad premature. Field Music are back on the road in Nov/Dec/Jan with a brand new album 'Field Music (Measure)' due for release on 15th February 2010 (16th in the US).
Awesome

ProDelgado  said about 2 years ago:

Yup, my mate joined them...

New album has leaked now.

Earl Brutus  said about 2 years ago:

fuck measure is awesome.

Urquhart Bluff  said about 2 years ago:

I thought it was called measure not fuck measure.

Arthurly  said about 2 years ago:

single on Rage right now!

Arthurly  said about 2 years ago:

my 3 yr old was singing along with this album the other day...'tis great

BurtBacharach  said about 2 years ago:

Late introduction to Field Music...coming to Measure for the first time tonight. Brilliant stuff.

hillsonghoods  said about 2 years ago:

Thoroughly agree Burt! Probably my favourite album of the year so far. Doesn't ''Measure'' the song sound like it comes straight from Apple Venus Vol 1?

black wasp!  said about 2 years ago:

I oscillated between being obsessed with this band (and Tones of Town) and being just plain bored/embarrassed by the tweeness of it all. Curious about Measure though.

BurtBacharach  said about 2 years ago:

Yeah, I can hear that hillbong

daveyaviator  said about 2 years ago:

I'm a newcomer to Field Music...enjoying immensely!! How would a seasoned listener compare Tones of Town with the latest album?

whatwhat  said about 2 years ago:

new album reminds me heaps of roxy music.

hillsonghoods  said about 2 years ago:

davey! yay, measure is awesome. measure has a bit more led zeppelin to it than previous field music, more groove and riffs. tones of town to me has a bit more of earlyish XTC to it, is a bit less adventurous. but it still has odd rhythms and clever lyrics, etc.

daveyaviator  said about 2 years ago:

yeah, I hear a bit of XTC in measure, but it's kinda the middle ground between their eccentricity and say, Wilco's more po-faced leanings towards vintage 70's prog...vocals sound nothing like Tweedy of course, just the guitar tones and licks are similar - a friend of mine actually mentioned Split Enz as well, which I can hear in a few tracks definitely.

My favourite song would have to be Effortlessy, the most accessible track probably, but pretty much a perfect pop song.

Arthurly  said about 2 years ago:

I hear a lot of Pink Floyd/prog influence on the new album. I haven't gotten into it as much as the first album yet.

Arthurly  said about 2 years ago:

on a similar, albiet twee-er tip, try Norweigian poppers Love Dance's album from 2007 Results

anok  said about 2 years ago:

guess i need to re-introduce myself to this band. been a while.

Urquhart Bluff  said about 2 years ago:

Their debut album is still my favourite.

Earl Brutus  said about 2 years ago:

mine too^. that love dance album is awesome ^^^.

mr.suit  said about 2 years ago:

measure might just be my album of the year. sounds like loose fur's 'born again in the usa' to these ears which ain't no crime. Saw Field Music play an instore at Amoeba Records just recently. Blown away by how tight they were, the drumming in particular was phenomenal.

daveyaviator  said about 2 years ago:

yeah, definitely hear a bit of O'Rourke in there, suit man - yeah, I'd love to see the drumming live...real snappy and tasty pop fills

Earl Brutus  said about 5 months ago:

yay

yay.
