what happened?

anyone else like tricky?

Nik De Car  said about 1 year ago:

VULNERABLE was ok..no Maxinquaye or Pre-Millenium Tension but certainly better than the the carbon copy artists that followed him.

Nik De Car  said about 1 year ago:

Check out Martina Topley-Bird's QUIXOTIC. ( his ex who sang on Christiansands etc)

Thrummmer  said about 1 year ago:

Cripples by a massive smack addiction. Pre-Millenium Tension is a beautifully dark album.

meg  said about 1 year ago:

I actually really enjoyed BlowBack!

Jasper  said about 1 year ago:

pre millenium tension and nearly god are my favourites. juxtapose was okay in parts and god awful in others. I have Quixotic. Its not bad.

Has anyopne heard his stuff with The Wild Bunch when he was 'Tricky Kid'?

columbo  said about 1 year ago:

columbo  said about 1 year ago:

i liked that track that was on Rage for ages ()bout 10 yrs ago) too - called "Poems". I think Tricky was a guest vocalist in some other guy's project for that..

Tricky played at the Annandale once y'know...

Jasper  said about 1 year ago:

dub3000  said about 1 year ago:

columbo  said about 1 year ago:

Nik De Car  said about 1 year ago:

They just bust out with ''HOW IS ITTT?'' at one point in the song ... towards the end I think.

ie: It's Tricky to rock a rhyme, to rock a rhyme that's right on time It's Tricky!
HOW IS ITTTT?
Tricky, tricky, tricky, tricky!

tinyman  said about 5 months ago:

c'mon Melbournites, back to last night. what were the set list highlights?

postergirl  said about 5 months ago:

For me, Christiansands. The new stuff sounded pretty good too. Black Steel was a bit underwhelming as girl singer's (name?) voice was really out of place in such a tuff track.

The_Tupelo_Flash  said about 5 months ago:

Some of the tracks from the new album were highlights - in particular Council Estate which Tricky threw himself into full force and delivered with a crazed kinetic fury. Also, Joseph from the the new album was so powerful live and moving in many ways. The band sounded great throughout but were sometime let down by the new female vocalist (anyone know her name?!)... she sounded better on the new tracks but oddly whenever she sang an old Martina vocal her voice lost volume! This was especially noticeable on Black Steel... and yeah, like postergirl said her voice lacked a vulnerability and emotional connection that Martina had.

Overall I really enjoyed Tricky's performance - just watching him is interesting! - but I was impressed with how engaging he was and his vocals were awesome.

postergirl  said about 5 months ago:

Just found this on my computer ... a review I wrote after seeing Tricky's 1996 show. It never appeared anywhere; I didn't have the balls to approach publications back then.

TRICKY- PRINCE OF WALES, MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA 26 JANUARY 1996

Tricky, Martina and band walked on to a stage bathed in an obscuring red glow which, although frustrating for those who wanted a better look, helped to retain the all- important mystique of the Bristol-bred act. The huge, percussive sound of opening track ''Ponderosa'' paved the way for a performance which duplicated the close, introspective feel of the album ''Maxinquaye'' while at the same time creating an encompassing, compelling soundscape appropriate to the live setting. The decision to use a band rather than relying entirely on samples gave the performance a rich texture and immediacy which is often missing from live performances of music of this genre.

Highlights included a pulsating ''Brand New You're Retro'' and a sublime ''Hell is Round the Corner'', with its eerie, swirling keyboard line and Martina's warm, crumbling vocals. ''Black Steel'' was even more powerful than on record and even inspired some moshing (Australian audiences just can't help themselves, can they?). ''Pumpkin'' showcased Martina's idiosyncratic voice once again and ''Strugglin'', in some ways Tricky's signature tune, was disturbing in its evocation of his personal frustration.

The wistful, hopeful ''Feed Me'' featuring a breathtaking vocal from Martina was abruptly cut short after the first verse when Tricky declared it ''boring''. Martina remained impassive after this denial of an opportunity to shine; she appeared to be resigned to the whims of her mercurial partner. Tricky then launched into some new tracks which showed an abandonment of the ''trip hop'' style in favour of a harder rock edge. A current of aggression and barely repressed violence pervaded many of these tracks, with Tricky rapping in insistent, guttural tones while moving on the spot with a weird contained energy. His frightening mantra of ''Damn me Jesus'', which seemed to last an eternity, combined with the declaration that he was sending negative energy to an audience member evoked thoughts of a possible violent, Altamont- style catastrophe. Fortunately this did not eventuate, but a certain edginess was apparent in the crowd.

One of the mellower new tracks featured lyrics culled from Prince's ''When Doves Cry'' and another lyrics from the Specials' ''Do the Dog'', an apparent homage to Tricky's idol Terry Hall. The introspection of the former and the depiction of thuggery in the latter song seemed to encapsulate the duality of Tricky's own nature; his vulnerability as well as his aggressive impulses in his life and his music.

Tricky exited the stage without returning for an encore, a fittingly indulgent action from this tormented star who appears consumed by his own private, hellish world view.
