Wilfred - SBS

anonymous  said about 4 years ago  or at  11:53PM on Tuesday, February 20 2007 in events

Thanks for gabbo's avatar for the reminder

8 part comedy series starting mar 19 or so? Coming alongside new south park episodes, and i think the return of pizza.

Based on the tropfest short of the same name, about a girl and her dog, and the new man in her life, and his interactions with same dog. Dog's a dude in a dog suit.

Could be interesting, could also be crap.

havn't found a website yet, oh well, will update when i find more.

hmm, from sbs independants page..

Wilfred 8 x ½ hr
Production Company: Renegade Films
Producer: Jenny Livingston
Director: Tony Rogers
Writers: Adam Zwar, Jason Gann

One woman, one man and a dog called Wilfred who is one pet who thinks he’s human behaving very badly.

Sarah and her “special little man” dog Wilfred have survived the trials and tribulations of the minefield which is Sarah’s love life. Enter the unsuspecting Adam who is oh so keen on Sarah but who has Wilfred to contend with and the scene is set for this very funny and deeply bent series. Insecure and manipulative, the pot smoking Wilfred will stop at nothing to keep Sarah’s love and affection. So how hard can it be to make friends with a dog? Not half as easy at it might seem.

another quirky australian comedy. yay! remember the last good one? i don't.

tinyman  said about 4 years ago:

sorry, television generally has been disappointing me heaps lately.

anonymous  said about 4 years ago:

fair enough..

pizza had its moment, but i think its just parodying itself these days.

anonymous  said about 4 years ago:

than again, you could say the commericals have stopped trying altogether, so theres not even much competition to rise to the top against.

anonymous  said about 4 years ago:

while im then againing, im now wondering if its been produced with "natural breaks" so sbs can slip some more ads in for mcdonalds or some such.

socks  said about 4 years ago:

This looks really funny though. I am looking forward to it.

sting-bono  said about 4 years ago:

this show better be good

Mrmusic  said about 4 years ago:

When I saw Gabbo's av, then posters around Annandale reading "Have you seen this dog"
Then the ads on SBS, I thought we'd been hit by a viral campaign.

gabbo  said about 4 years ago:

you have been.

VIRUS!!!!

horse  said about 4 years ago:

I've been in Adam's position.. it ended up with me liking the dog more.

Elijah Wood looks like the show's weakest link in that trailer.

HEB  said about 7 months ago:

Not sure why the US version had to spend so long trying to rationalise the basic set-up
The side characters are going to prove really annoying as well

RichardSmoker  said about 7 months ago:

as if we needed more proof that the yanks can't remake comedies.

it's as if they've plonked poor old wilfred into some half-arsed version of friends ... and i totally agree that whole rationalisation of the set up is so tired. Clearly way too many idiots messing up the mix.

But then they create huge holes in it with no0n-sequitars like wilfred somehow bringing his own bong to the scene. It just doesn't work unless that stuff is already in the house and wilfred's just juping on one when he gets the chance ... and the timing and tone of the jokes is way off ... could go on and but ... 2 stars

It's not a plot hole if you work on the assumption that Elijah's hallucinating / crazy.

In the US version you see a 'real' dog - did any real animals show up in the Australian version?

I don't mind the remake though, I must say.

shakethecloudsout  said about 7 months ago:

i didn't mind the whole suicidal/pharmaceutical/hallucinations rationalisation at all. as far as shows being remade for the US go, it's actually quite an obvious/clever & relevant a way to approach it for that audience.

doesn't really matter anyway, jason gann is golden & carries the whole show and he now has even more room to be fucking hilarious ie. we get more wilfred. i thought the first ep was lols, even if i was on some critical high horse and the show was a complete turd, i would just be hoping that dude makes the bigtime eitherway..

Dogbastard  said about 7 months ago:

I didn't find it as horrendous as I thought it would.

Great that Gann is still Wilfred and still Australian, though a couple of interesting vocab choices, obviously made so Seppos could understand - I notice he said ''trash'' (when an Aussie would have said ''rubbish/garbage'').

He did, however, still say ''wanker'', which was nice.

mud  said about 7 months ago:

Americans, huh? They won't read subtitles and they insist on having their anthropomorphised animals explained.

spaceman1  said about 7 months ago:

He should be thankful he didn't get a conviction (don't understand why) which would have prevented him from working in the states.

Coz  said about 7 months ago:

Ha, totes. I don't get it, was that article meant to invoke sympathy for him?

moribunderast  said about 7 months ago:

Have had the displeasure of running into the guy when he's pissed so that article doesn't really surprise me. As far as the remake goes, it's fine thus far. Probably on a par with the original, though I didn't think the original was anything too amazing either. It's in a pretty good position, airing alongside Louie in the States. Will be interested to see if US audiences connect with it at all.

RoastOxCrisps  said about 7 months ago:

haven't watched the original, loving the remake.

gabbo  said about 7 months ago:

i've had the pleasure of dining with him sober, and i liked him. just seemed like a normal queensland dude with a lot of ambition (oxymoron?), willing to 'play the game' and climb the ladder, but also happy to just have fun in life.

d/l-ed the 2nd ep. liked it, though not as many LOL moments. seems to be tracking similarly to the aussie series. loving elijah wood.

shakethecloudsout  said about 7 months ago:

wow that is supremely dickish re: the drunken assault.

postergirl  said about 7 months ago:

Read that article on the weekend. It's appalling and inexcusable. What a nasty piece of work.
