Bike riding

goldfoot  said about 5 years ago  or at  12:04PM on Friday, July 7 2006 in chat

A while back Laverne gave me an old pushie and I've been riding it everywhere. I love the freedom of a bike gives you.

I've slowly been building up to longer and longer rides. Last week I rode to the art gallery and around the Botanic Gardens and under the Harbour Bridge. It was great. I've also done some of the Cooks River bike path and also down through Glebe around The Harbour to the Fish Markets and Casino. I've been riding to work a bit too. Coming home through Redfern at 1am is fun.

Has anyone got any other suggestions for good rides? nonemoreblack keeps trying to get me to go on 'critical mass' rides but they sound a bit gay.

Feel free to share stories about cycling or post pics of your bike on this thread.

you have to put on some rubber gloves and apply a damp rag to your bike collection japanrodeo.

just give em a little clean and they will be usable again.

My poor bike sits neglected in my back yard.

The bay ride (near drummoyne pool and iron cove bridge) is good - easy but good and you can jump off and have a swim in the heated outdoor saltwater pool too!

littlearch  said about 5 years ago:

god i love drummoyne pool

There is Bicycle NSW and a Marrickville bike group called BUGS I think, they have newsletters detailing group rides, Nomoreblack could tell you more about it as he went one of these rides.

I ride to work most days from Newtown to Paddington and I love it because I get to cut through Moore Park.

Yesterday I rode right into the heart of the city which was fun initially but a real pain as both the footpaths and roads are really busy.

SheikYerbouti  said about 5 years ago:

Yeah bay ride is good, also Olympic Park - Rhodes - Newington Armory has loads of bike tracks.

i found out a while ago there's a company that makes bikes called 'nishiki'. i must have one. but i have to get 'em from japan i think.

goldfoot  said about 5 years ago:

I'm getting less timid with traffic now and don't freak out too much on busy roads but fuck it's great to get on a 'bikes only' track.

Is that ride 10 kms, have a pump, ride 10 kms, have a pump & repeat until someone breaks down?

redlips  said about 5 years ago:

the bike only tracks along anzac parade are pretty schmick!

I rode from glebe to UNSW once - it's about 10 kms but mostly flat (around through the back of ultimo) - commonwealth st is the killer.

There's a book (produced by Bicycle NSW) which has safe(r) routes around sydney

I'm with you dude. I ride on the footpath as much as possible and only on the road when I have to. I've received some flack for that but I don't give a fuck. The bike is a money saving A to B for me and nothing more. I'm enjoying riding it but yeah the traffic and fuckwits on the road is far to mental for me to ride on the road much.

cityofthechasch  said about 2 years ago:

yeah I'm moving soon. And I have this thing sorted where I can park my old shitbox truck in the garage and walk and ride around to do things now. So I would like to become a new bike type old dude thingo and get into it. Save money, low impact lifestyle etc.I'm really keen.

yesterday I watched a guy riding in traffic come down the hill trying to change lanes to do a turn and his arm is out and this car is driving up alongside him and so he pedals more and more and the car finally lets him be and he made his turn. he did that momentary wobble handle bar thing cos he had one hand on them and I shit myself watching him. thought he might go over...

fucking drivers.

LaxCharisma  said about 2 years ago:

Yeah...they are cunts. Drivers. GET OFF YER FUCKING PHONE AND STOP WATCHING TV.

cityofthechasch  said about 2 years ago:

haha dvd players in cars. fucking insane.

Zaphod  said about 2 years ago:

I'll not be convinced that the footpath is any place for a bike. Unless you're 12. But yeah, horses for courses - just don't be the cnt who zooms past me and my missus strolling King on a Sunday morning, almost knocking hip bones.

I only realised when the bike got to the shop that I'd busted a few spokes in a minor stack I had Monday night (leaning into a roundabout too fast, clipping the edge, sliding..). Wonder if that's a whole new wheel or if they can patch tat shit up?

bungle  said about 2 years ago:

I'm not riding on the road Lax. no way..haha maybe up on a local road with not much thru traffic but like on real roads etc. nah. not for a while..if evr.

Riding solely on the footpath with cleats on is going to get you in more trouble than riding on the road will.

cityofthechasch  said about 2 years ago:

I won't wear the cleats for a while. I'll just get used to the bike first. I don't think I could do cleats for ages.

bungle  said about 2 years ago:

if like you say you have a proper touring bike, you're probably going to have trouble riding in regular sneakers on those pedals.

cityofthechasch  said about 2 years ago:

hmmm, well I'll see how I go. I spose I could try the cleats. best I just get on the bike and give it a spin and see.

LaxCharisma  said about 2 years ago:

Haha! no, see King Street is one of the few places I WILL ride on the road. Although busy at times the traffic isn't moving heaps fast, and when I do ride on the footpath I'm not so much of an assclown that I will hoon past people walking about. I ride at a walking pace or even get off my bike when I'm on a busy footpath.

mealzebub  said about 2 years ago:

The Lilyfield > Anzac Bridge > Pyrmont > CBD cycleway is ACE on a Sunday ... rode to the AGNSW last weekend and it was tops. There's a great printmaking exhibition on at the mo' - kinda surreal to lock yer bike, then wander in and have a lazy butcher's at William Blake's Book of Job series. For nix!

Peter  said about 2 years ago:

getting another step closer to a bit of Sydney cycling again today. put my Pug into Bike Bug last Friday. picked it up last Tuesday and bought a helmut today. the helmut resembles Luftwaffe issue. sieg heil, coolsies!

cityofthechasch  said about 2 years ago:

whew..just got back from my first ride! walked up the bike shop got a helmet( a black one!!) and discussed tyre pressure which he pumped up and adjusted my seat and sent me on my way. said it's a good bike I got a bargain he said..

bike is awesome, so fast, the gears are so good. wasn't so hard after all! excellent!

Peter  said about 2 years ago:

i'd planned my debut for tomorrow morning but busy now with an appointment. afterwards is possible, but another app. just after midday so i'm sorting logistics on putting the bike in my car and rolling after the second meet. it's at Dee Why so Dee Why to Palm Beach??? fair effort though i haven't done it yet.

cityofthechasch  said about 2 years ago:

I made a splash on my debut. first walk across the roundabout pushing bike and some commodore old cow came flying through beeping me and I laconically didn't flinch as she missed my rear wheel by not much really.. and I just turned and with my hair flailing and conan looks growled what's the problem bitch?

fucking drivers. if I was in the truck I could run over that commodore. like the truck has monstor truck tyres. how lucky they are I am a nice guy...

katiepotatie  said about 2 years ago:

peter - have you pics/links for your helmet? sounds intriguiging....

curses! I knew I didn't just imagine posting on here last night!

tvforcats  said about 2 years ago:

how come posties are allowed to ride on the footpath? Those shared footpath areas shit me too, as they usually end without expecting it.
