Bike riding

goldfoot  said about 2 years ago  or at  1:04PM on Friday, July 7 2006.

A while back Laverne gave me an old pushie and I've been riding it everywhere. I love the freedom of a bike gives you.

I've slowly been building up to longer and longer rides. Last week I rode to the art gallery and around the Botanic Gardens and under the Harbour Bridge. It was great. I've also done some of the Cooks River bike path and also down through Glebe around The Harbour to the Fish Markets and Casino. I've been riding to work a bit too. Coming home through Redfern at 1am is fun.

Has anyone got any other suggestions for good rides? nonemoreblack keeps trying to get me to go on 'critical mass' rides but they sound a bit gay.

Feel free to share stories about cycling or post pics of your bike on this thread.

i used to be a solid distance rider but i've lost all my conditioning. i'm building up to the 10kms to Dights Falls

means nothing to you of course, goldfoot

i bought a bike and it got spiderwebs in it, so i bought a new one. now that has spiderwebs in it. yucky.

my bike

sister  said about 2 years ago:

you have to put on some rubber gloves and apply a damp rag to your bike collection japanrodeo.

just give em a little clean and they will be usable again.

My poor bike sits neglected in my back yard.

The bay ride (near drummoyne pool and iron cove bridge) is good - easy but good and you can jump off and have a swim in the heated outdoor saltwater pool too!

littlearch  said about 2 years ago:

god i love drummoyne pool

There is Bicycle NSW and a Marrickville bike group called BUGS I think, they have newsletters detailing group rides, Nomoreblack could tell you more about it as he went one of these rides.

I ride to work most days from Newtown to Paddington and I love it because I get to cut through Moore Park.

Yesterday I rode right into the heart of the city which was fun initially but a real pain as both the footpaths and roads are really busy.

SheikYerbouti  said about 2 years ago:

Yeah bay ride is good, also Olympic Park - Rhodes - Newington Armory has loads of bike tracks.

nishiki  said about 2 years ago:

i found out a while ago there's a company that makes bikes called 'nishiki'. i must have one. but i have to get 'em from japan i think.

goldfoot  said about 2 years ago:

I'm getting less timid with traffic now and don't freak out too much on busy roads but fuck it's great to get on a 'bikes only' track.

Is that ride 10 kms, have a pump, ride 10 kms, have a pump & repeat until someone breaks down?

redlips  said about 2 years ago:

the bike only tracks along anzac parade are pretty schmick!

I rode from glebe to UNSW once - it's about 10 kms but mostly flat (around through the back of ultimo) - commonwealth st is the killer.

There's a book (produced by Bicycle NSW) which has safe(r) routes around sydney

I hate seeing bike riders pick & choose when they are a road user or a pedestrian

As a relatively new bike rider, I find it hard in some parts to know this also, especially when bike lanes just end and footpaths become shared.

filterfeed  said 23 days ago:

will do, ed_lunch. i was just stunned that they didn't slow done one bit as i crossed the last metre of road. at a traffic light. on the green man. they were wearing a helmet though. one day it will come in handy for them i'm sure.

i would love to ride but this town's roads just scare me. and using footpaths is supposedly against the law isn't it? looks like i'll be using my feet for a while.

Crankenmas Charity ride/race In an adaptation of the ever popular Cranksgiving races across the USA we are bringing to Melbourne a race not just for you, but for others.
There's no registration fee, but you're going to need to bring cash with you, because the checkpoints are all grocery stores. At these grocery stores, you're going to have to leave your bike outside, run in, and purchase** a specified food item. A bag & a lock is absolutely essential! Once you've collected all of the food items and have finished the race, we do a group ride to a soup kitchen & drop off all of our donations. Keep all of your receipts, because I'm going to check them to make sure you made it to each of the checkpoints.
Registration will be at 2pm at the fountain south of the Royal Exhibition Building in Carlton Gardens (Between Rathdown and Nicholson) Don't go Jeff's Shed - we won't be there.
The race will start at 2:30.
Receipts will be used to make sure you've been to the right checkpoints and have actually purchased the items. NO STEALING.

got car door'd the other day, in the rain on a'beckett st. couldn't hate the guy cos i'd been on the other end once myself. did advise hime to use his effin mirror though. he gave me a pineapple to replace my sunnies that had fallen out my pocket & smashed on the street.

the funny thing is trying to work out whether you're in shock or not. but i sure as shit wasn't walking home in the rain so i just got back on the tredly.

tadatadatada  said 19 days ago:

ahh yes. times changed, apparently something else is happening ni the afternoon. definitely meet at 11am, i realised after i cut and pasted and pressed post. hopefully enough people do it, should be a fun way of donating some food

CryMeARiver  said 18 days ago:

Man, I wish I could make it to the race tomorrow...stupid xmas family commitments.
It should be done more often!

littlesmoke  said 14 days ago:

Just realised...ANOTHER new PB for the ride into work this morning! I must actually be getting fit...had to happen eventually.

Coz  said 9 days ago:

My boyfriend got me a sweet new bike for christmas - I can finally ride properly, safely. And I worked out that I can get all the way from home in East Brunswick to work in Port Melbourne without riding on the road for more than about 5mins, woohoo! I'm still all safety concious...

Now all I need now is fitness. I got halfway there and back (about 12kms total) yesterday, so I'll be commuter cycling in no time (I hope)!

tvforcats  said 9 days ago:

which way did you go coz? canning street? Im in east brun too, its a nice ride to the city

Coz  said 8 days ago:

Along the bike path next to the Brunswick train line, down to the citylink path, along paths in the docklands and over to Port Melbourne where I work.

How often do bikes get stolen? Reading this thread, it seems like about every 5.3 seconds.

katiepotatie  said 8 days ago:

i dont think its that bad, just use a good lock, some common sense, and cross your fingers.

CryMeARiver  said 8 days ago:

Man, first day back on the bike post-xmas and those extra helpings sure are slowing me down!
Moved house and have a new and improved ride to work, will be able to get it down to about 20 minutes too, woo!

I like that ride!

I'm after some bike shop recommendations...I have an old ten speed which needs some work. I've tried to fix it myself but I don't have the tools for some of it, and other bits are just beyond me.

Can anyone recommend a good bike shop in the inner north of Melb? My last few bike repair experiences at shops have been way overpriced, had lazy workmanship, or they've just plain not done things I've asked for. I won't name names, because they're not all bad and have been fine to deal with in the past.

At the moment I'm thinking of giving Abbotsford Cycles a go, even though it means walking the bike from Fitzroy to Richmond. Unless there are any other suggestions?

tadatadatada  said 5 days ago:

abbotsford bicycles have a really good rep, and they're generally pleasant and always helpful for me.

Got my average speed on the way home from work up to 26 km/hr this evening - Woohoo!
