Welcome to mess and noise.
Unless people here already know your band, or another on the bill, they won't go to your gig unless you dazzle them with your wit, annoy them till they come just to stab you, post photos that shows how jaw droppingly hot you are, or provide a link so they can listen to and fall in love with your music.

Regards
MrM

bradmurray  said about 5 years ago:

The Instant are friggin' awesome. Hope your launch goes well guys!

filterfeed  said about 5 years ago:

the newcastle show looks awesome.

pity about, you know, not being in newcastle and that.

TransientRandom  said about 5 years ago:

bah! dateclash crap!

agreed on the newy show, looks a treat indeed!

is the album actually out yet? this will have to be one of the 2-odd new records i buy a year for...er.. this year.

number none  said about 5 years ago:

I got the album yesterday. farrk its nice

TransientRandom  said about 5 years ago:

oh cool number none. i'll have to pull my head out of the ground and make a purchase!

filterfeed  said about 5 years ago:

yeah, it's been out for a bit. the artwork is really, really nice.

al  said about 5 years ago:

weird venue, what time to bands play at booby trap? the eastern suburbs scare me.. its like crossing the yarra

beertickle  said about 5 years ago:

knomadix you know that adam is moving to New York for a few months and little Davey Bedlam is joining the fold?

Melody  said about 5 years ago:

MrM, where have you been? The Instant are totally fantastic. They did an amazing show with Pivot at Spectrum last week, slightly marred by cable issues, but dosen't deminish their great music. I stole a poster too.

knomadix  said about 5 years ago:

ahh beertickle.. that is ringing a bell now.. remember NY plans..bedlam huh?

sounds interesting.. but what will Syd do without one of it's most eligible bachelors??

esquared  said about 5 years ago:

They ruled with pivot. I want to see them again.
Anyone know what time they are on at booby trap? I gotta go home at 2 and from memory that place goes late...

The Instant  said about 5 years ago:

Doors are at 8,
The instant are on at 11. sharp.

beertickle  said about 5 years ago:

Anyone know where Booby Trap is?

al  said about 5 years ago:

this will be fucking awesome though..

al  said about 5 years ago:

al  said about 5 years ago:

bizump for the afternoon crowd.. which is so different to the morning crowd..

nothroughroad  said about 5 years ago:

i hear good things about this band....

beertickle  said about 5 years ago:

you hear correct

monochromic  said about 5 years ago:

anyone have the playing times?

McGauz  said about 5 years ago:

one of the best bands in Australia IMHO fucking intense live last week

al  said about 5 years ago:

the instant on around 11.. warhorse on earlier, is what i've been told anyway

monochromic  said about 5 years ago:

cheers al!

beertickle  said about 5 years ago:

yeah mcgauz...i think i commented on the night they sounded angry but they were just pissed off because they thought they played shit...

McGauz  said about 5 years ago:

it wasn't just that though... it was the sounddude... Tim's guitar was super loud in matt's drum fill, and was deafening the poor bastard... and he was ignored repeatedly on his request to have it turned way the fuck down.. so he got pissed off and starting smashing the shit out of his drums.

while the loudness in the drum fill made it unbearable to play, and hence why he stopped playing altogether on several occasions, it made them angry enough to create some wonderful onstage tension which was unleashed in the remaining songs.

Plus Alex's guitar was so quiet in the mix you could hardly hear it. And the mixer made us have shit so quiet onstage that you could hardly hear it yourself either... hence also why Alex was jumping about throwing his guitar around and playing just about anything! ha you couldn't hear it. Looked good thouh :)

I know it would have been shit to be onstage amongst that, but from the audience's perspective, it was explosive.

Punch  said about 5 years ago:

ffs mcgauz. whan are you bringing them here again? i need a fix - it's been about two years for me!!

filterfeed  said about 5 years ago:

yeah, mcgauz!

McGauz  said about 5 years ago:

what you tolkien about? you saw them at Pony late last year.. I was there.. you gave me that live Trail of Dead cd...

still.. yes.. they need to get back to melb. I hear MAY, potentially.

McGauz  said about 5 years ago:

oh whoops... I got the comments mixed around.. thought it was filterfeed who posted punch's comment and vice versa :) whoops.

yes, 2 years is a long time Punch. Adam gets back from New York late April/early May... then there's a possible national tour... i think???

whatever happens.. Melbourne will have to be on the cards! I'll bend over backwards to get these fellas back down here

beertickle  said about 5 years ago:

providing adam comes home and doesn't find a loophole to stay with his bird

Punch  said about 5 years ago:

i'll hold your neck down.

filterfeed  said about 5 years ago:

pfft, late last year. i want weekly show options, damn it.

beertickle  said about 5 years ago:

fuck knows i'd rather be in NY than Sydney especially the wicket he has set himself up on

Punch  said about 5 years ago:

it's not good enough, is it, filterfeed. i say mcgauz is sacked.

beertickle  said about 5 years ago:

oops that sounds weird..

McGauz  said about 5 years ago:

haha must be a good wicket. Adam was smiling sheepishly when I asked him about his trip :) NY is definitely better than Sydney.

I think I was sacked long ago Punch :) The Instant have management now. Hence why their last two trips down to melb they've played Bootleg. I can rarely be fucked dealing (or have any luck) with regularly run nights such as those. I usually just set up my own nights with bands I know.

Are you coming to Pony on Saturday (tomorrow) night Punch? you should.

al  said about 5 years ago:

ive always found them a pretty easy band to mix, they sound fantastic.. the gear is all top notch and maintained, and theres no fucking vocal princess to worry about.. so you just turn up the rock and its awesome

but some people amaze me with their skillz behind a sound desk.. i dont profess to be able to perform open heart surgery with no skillz..

Punch  said about 5 years ago:

yes, you're right, i should. i may not be in town. i'll see.

McGauz  said about 5 years ago:

true al... they're not hard to mix.. I think some mixers are just too set in their ways. this dude was uber-serious and controlling every little detail, even telling the headliner to take gear offstage. Still.. for the most part he did a pretty decent job. But baffles me how people can't even use their imagination or common sense to mix The Instant. When Nao has mixed them, he has the drums sounding superb, with just a slight bit of reverb on the snare, and most importantly, the guitars mostly level so you can hear all the interplay between them.

Some of the guitar interplay is the most important shit in all the songs!!! some of the riffs don't sound the same with only one guitar dominating, you need both mixed in their.

In this regard, it's really only a level thing surely...

best thing about the mix though was Adam's bass up in the mix, much more than any other show I've seen.

al  said about 5 years ago:

yeah i basically just mix the guitars within about 3db of equal and pan them reasonably wide left/right.. the whole point is that effect..

adams bass is probably the hardest part of the mix, because hes very subtle in his playing.. you need to find a space for the dynamics and the tone amongst this wall of noise coming at you :)

McGauz  said about 5 years ago:

it's amazing.. after years of having a copy of their album... I'm only now hearing some of his basslines. One, i can't believe I've never noticed before, is incredible! like you say, so subtle, but he still slides around the neck and creates some pretty damn cool lines, which if you consider the fact they most likely come AFTER the guitar lines, it'd be a fair chore to get in there and work them out

Brendan  said about 5 years ago:

How is that possible to only hear a bassline years later? Is it like those ring tones they sell on Video Hits that only people under 22 can hear?

McGauz  said about 5 years ago:

i guess I've always been a guitarist and payed attention to the guitar lines... but now I play bass more, and listen a lot to the basslines... AND the most logical explanation: the album has been newly mastered before finally being release late last year - because it was recorded years ago... and also, I did notice on last listen that Tim has over-dubbed a bit of acoustic guitar on the intro to one song, which wasn't there on the old copy of the album I have. But the new copy.. well it's a little, just every so slightly different.

The Instant  said about 5 years ago:

You hear right...

beertickle  said about 5 years ago:

sydney's most eligible bachelor in rock as voted by the brag (unsure wether staff or readers though)

McGauz  said about 5 years ago:

man that would be just odd wouldn't it??

anyway... back to melbourne ya sods! :)

The Instant  said about 5 years ago:

up you go.

McGauz  said about 5 years ago:

all Melbourne needs before it can die happy is a My Disco / The Instant bill... actually, once I've seen that I may stop going to gigs forever. What will be the point!?
