Gear nerds

JBR  said about 5 years ago  or at  10:51AM on Thursday, July 6 2006 in chat

Just because gear slutz is a bit boring atm.

So what are all you people who actually make music in to at the moment?
What pieces are you lusting after?
What gear do you NEED to make better records/music whatever?

scallywag  said about 5 years ago:

a good producer

BAHAHAHAHA!!!

scallywag  said about 5 years ago:

wipes tears from eyes

seriously though, JBR - could you pick us up an SVT while you're OS?

i'm good for it bro

JBR  said about 5 years ago:

hmm, wait until we hit the states again, have some dude at the guitar centre.... bit of a connection. farken cheap. 2 for the price of 1! Cheaper even.

scallywag  said about 5 years ago:

really?

let's take it to PM land

Mo  said about 5 years ago:

i would really love a nice strat and a good clean combo amp

just for messing about with at home

the power of 666  said about 5 years ago:

YAY! SLUT THREAD!

JBR  said about 5 years ago:

strats are awesome. sometimes.

JBR  said about 5 years ago:

yes, slut threads rule!
you can learn and fantasise and be funny!
its all the best parts of life!

Mo  said about 5 years ago:

well i hate them live and for the sound i need in hcg

that is soley gretsch + jcm800 = my sound i need

but i wanna fuck around on hendrix songs and things of that ilk (ala wind cries mary) etc

and i miss those pretty in between settings on the strat

i aint played one since i was 17

RoastOxCrisps  said about 5 years ago:

What I want at the moment is
The new KONTROL49 combines intuitive design, great feel, familiar hardware and detailed displays into the most comprehensive controller for all your MIDI needs. Equipped with 40 assignable control elements – including the new Vector Joystick – the KONTROL49 provide new musical dexterity when working with soft-synths, MIDI modules, or any digital audio workstation.

JBR  said about 5 years ago:

i still have a strat.
I do actually think they rule.
Ringing bottom end and sweet tops. Need bigger gauge strings though..

RoastOxCrisps  said about 5 years ago:

I am angry that midi controllers which have no synth capabilities of their own cost as much as a fucking synth.

the power of 666  said about 5 years ago:

And I don't think this is a JBR Mail Order thread

But, you reckon you could pick me up either a Rosetta 800 or an Apogee Ensemble?

Anyway, my current lust list is;

  • new A/D D/A box: either an Apogee Ensemble or an RME Fireface. A Rosetta 800 or a Lynx Auroura is in my dreamland...

  • a compressor: I have no idea about compressors... An FMR RNC is my price range though.

for longer term (as i'm kinda ok for preamps at the moment ;) )

  • an API lunchbox with an API preamp, the Shadow Hills Mono GAMA, an API pre, some kind of sweet EQ & if they make a good one, a compressor for within the lunchie.

That's pretty much it for me.

Yo JBR, do you normally compress vocals on the way into the mix? I find that i'm peaking out when just running through the GAMA, due to lack of compression, coz i'm like soo fuckin' dynamic & shit. Also, I wanna pick your branes on a few things;

  • what A/D did Quangs rig use that we used on the album? Do you know?

  • What kind of shit were we running the synths through that made them go GRAAWWRR? Was that just preamp, or was there EQ & shit in there? You know, when you'd turn around and go AWWW SHIT?

scallywag  said about 5 years ago:

those bigger gauge strings are essential

fret buzz 4 eva

paulie  said about 5 years ago:

Mo - there's this green Gretch at Swop Shop at the moment. Worth a play(and a pretty penny) if you're in melbourne.

Mo  said about 5 years ago:

yeh i would love one

but i gotta get one of my marshalls re-tubed

and i got two gretsches at the moment anyways (tho not proper nice ones - they still sound great)

JBR  said about 5 years ago:

Hey ROC that shit so sucks.... they are just switches for fuck sake.... effectively....

RoastOxCrisps  said about 5 years ago:

speaking of switches, this rules

Mrmusic  said about 5 years ago:

yeah, would it kill them to chuck a few pre sets on a midi controller??

JBR  said about 5 years ago:

or just make em cheaper...

The manual for fireface is the worst thing about it. They should get someone whose native language is english to re-write it.

untold/animals  said about 3 months ago:

What is the deal with Totalmix - how can it be that bad that it nearly destroyed speakers? Just wondering; not trying to be indignant and patronising.

Davel  said about 3 months ago:

Have a read of the manual. It's a great unit but the manual really sucks.

untold/animals  said about 3 months ago:

Thanks, but I don't own one and I'm not going to go and seek out a manual just to see why it sucks!

Davel  said about 3 months ago:

It's 97 pages of totalsuck. Luckily the distributor is really nice and helpful, but I don't think I

would have bought it if I'd known how much stress I was up for. If you have a Via firewire

chipset, it probably won't work properly. Via fucked up their early firewire implementation due

to someone's poor reading skills! You need a texas instruments chipset or you will have

errors, particularly at higher sample rates. OTOH it does sound great, and once issues

were sorted it is super reliable and has never let me down.

electricsound  said about 3 months ago:

i changed the output of my monitors but not the channel assignation. so when i pressed play it came out 40db louder than expected as i had switched from an attenuated channel to one that was not

stupid, but yeah

electricsound  said about 3 months ago:

switching from an interface with dedicated monitor outs to one without is taking getting used to

untold/animals  said about 3 months ago:

Oh, that's just stupid!

untold/animals  said about 3 months ago:

I mean, I suppose it makes for a more flexible interface. Still, risky for most users.

venompstinger  said about 3 months ago:

40 odd minute youtube video of Nels Cline walking you through his gear and setup.

rawr  said about 2 months ago:

anyone know where I can get an adapter to go from a 9-pin din socket (old tape recorder) to a 2.5 or 3.5mm jack?

I suppose I could make one myself with parts from jaycar or something, but I have no clue how to do that.

electricsound  said about 2 months ago:

you see din to rca cables about, most seem to be for 5 pin though..

Davel  said about 2 months ago:

I don't think there is a 9 pin din. I can see 3,4,5,6,7,8,10,12 and 14 though.

electricsound  said about 2 months ago:

there is, but it's not for audio, so unless this was a proprietary connector it's probably not really 9 pin

Davel  said about 2 months ago:

It's very unusual to see anything apart from 5.

Davel  said about 2 months ago:

Maybe it's not called a din plug? maybe some other standard/name?

rawr  said about 2 months ago:

oops, it's 8 pin.

Mo  said about 2 months ago:

bought the CLA classic compressor bundle the other week, fkn loving it

electricsound  said about 2 months ago:

maybe something like this rawr?

rawr  said about 2 months ago:

yep, that'd do the job i think. where would i purchase one of those?

electricsound  said about 2 months ago:

that particular one is ''Scosche Industries Scosche DCAXKEN13'' so might be worth having a google about for best price etc
