Dogs In Space

anorakhighst  said about 5 years ago  or at  12:02AM on Thursday, February 8 2007 in films

There doesn't seem to be a Dogs In Space thread here; time to remedy this...

Does anyone know if/when the Dogs In Space DVD is coming out? Richard Lowenstein said in 2004 that he was working on it and the bonus features (which included a making-of documentary shot at the time of filming), but it doesn't seem to have emerged.

Is it true that the project was scuttled because, under recent changes to censorship laws, the film has become illegal in Australia (as it depicts underage sex)?

isn't there dvd copies around anyhow?

jimmytrash  said about 5 years ago:

Man, i adore the primitive calculators in this.

anorakhighst  said about 5 years ago:

Apparently there was a UK DVD, which reportedly had very poor quality (it was apparently made from an old VHS copy or somesuch). As far as I know, this is now out of print.

I was thinking the other day how fucking ridiculous Michael Hutchence’s character is in this movie.

If I knew someone like Sammy I'd give them a stern talking to and tell them to get their shit together!!!

you mean you never knew someone like Sammy?

seamonkeydisco  said about 5 years ago:

man i wish it was still the 80's and everyone hated their parents and moved out into crack dens and ate dogfood to get by.

personally, i blame scientific progress.

modhisattva  said about 5 years ago:

There were no metal gods in this film, though, Plier, if there were, he might have pulled his socks up and not been a loser smackie that killed his girlfriend and shagged the underage girl.

I was disappointed that Nique Needles' character didn't have a punch on with him after being kicked out of the band. Those keys totally made that band.

modhisattva  said about 5 years ago:

It was set in 79, smd

I did a transfer of a friend's VHS copy a couple of years ago to DVD - came out well, better than the UK DVD copy, which was rubbish.

I did read something about copyright release issues - Hutchence related - but can't find the link now.

Fuck yes Hellza....do you have it? a girl I know has it on VHS and we are both scared to watch it again in case it disintegrates. I want to get it converted to DVD somehow...no one ever talks about this movie so I am afraid it won't get the re-issue treatment that Dogs In Space got. I mean Michael Hutchence isn't in it but so fucking what it's fucking great. The band...man...those guys can really like play. The most committed drummer ever.

Hellzapoppin  said about 1 year ago:

I've only ever hired it out on VHS, though I hear there was a small DVD release done in the UK?? But indeed, the movie is grand, one of my personal fav things to watch whenever I happen to come across it. Those final scenes are perfect.

It is a great film.

fowltonmeans  said about 1 year ago:

Strikebound and Evictions are in one respect thematically similar to Dogs in Space but in most nothing like it and not music oriented at all (though as I recall Sam Sejavka is in Strikebound - in a small part). They are docudramas i.e. documentaries using oral history and dramatic recreations, about working class struggles of the 1930s - the first I think in Wonthaggi (this is from memory) and the second in inner-city Melbourne.
Lowenstein's mother Wendy was a well-respected though if I recall rightly not academic historian, her Weevils in the Flour was a particularly popular book in the 70s.

Killing one dog by accident so we can have a global communications network and possibly one day reach the Stars is I think what they call an acceptible loss.

Just in case anyone was wondering...''Whatever happened to that Nique Needles guy''.

The strange and wonderful story, told by the man himself.

pfinger18  said about 3 months ago:

Thanks for the link Frankie. He looks like someone who's about to start a military coup or something.

outerspacextrapnel  said about 3 months ago:

I have often wondered that Frankie. Thanks for the link.

LaxCharisma  said about 3 months ago:

Yeah cheers Frankie

FrankieTeardrop  said about 3 months ago:

Ha ha. I was thinking the same thing about the military coup. I also liked the fact that he refers to himself as the king of the village.
