The 2007 RPM Challenge
This is the challenge: record an album in 28 days, just because you can.

i would, but albini is booked up this month, damn

dsico  said about 5 years ago:

haha.

mipearson  said about 5 years ago:

That's pretty cool.

Does it have to be any good? I can see myself getting to the end of the month with two decent tracks and 25 minutes of drum loops.

dsico  said about 5 years ago:

yeah,

I'm going to give it a shot but its gonig to be a busy month... 1 song every 3 days.. soem of those might be a bit short...

> But this doesn’t have to be the album, it’s just an album. Remember, this is an artistic exercise.

that "quote" thing isn't working for me

michael_horse  said about 5 years ago:

it only works on the first post

dsico  said about 5 years ago:

clearly no one else gives a shit.

JRB  said about 3 years ago:

Starts tomorrow! I'm all signed up and stuff.

This is a great idea. Saw another one similar a while back except i think it gave a limit of 24 hours. Naturally most results were pretty woeful, but interesting nonetheless.

tadatadatada  said about 3 years ago:

i might give this a shot.i found the pitchfork article about it a couple of years ago pretty intersting.

I'm goign to try again this year. BVut its alr4eaedy the 5th and i got nothing - clearly way behind schedule.

and my soundcard has wigged out.

JRB  said about 2 years ago:

I was lazy last year and produced squat. This year for sure!

froginasock  said about 1 year ago:

I'm having a crack at this, but this month instead (because a few people I know are doing NaNoWriMo, and I'd rather go for music.)

Any tips?

froginasock  said about 1 year ago:

No tips for frog :(

Ach well, 2 weeks in and I'd already rank this as the most rewarding musical expedition I've ever gone on. I'm sure I won't be completely happy with the quality of the songs at the end of the month, there's only so much you can get done, but the exercise is totally worthwhile.

dsico  said about 1 year ago:

sorry Frogs. tips? um well I went alright in 2009 / 2010 with 9 and 11 tracks respectively.

I would just write lyrics everywhere, on the bus, on the train on the way to work and stuff. Then get home from work Crack a beer and get straight into it.

Spend 1 night 'writing' the song and then the next night - retracking all the parts that needed to be re-tracked.

Weekends I'd start off the day writing something new. until i hit a brickwall then load up one of the earlier songs and start mixing it.

froginasock  said about 1 year ago:

So I got it done. Barely.

Spent the whole month writing and recording little minute-long demos to get the ideas straight. Ended up with piles of material to sort through, and by the time I had arranged maybe 3/4 or it, I was staring down the last weekend of the month.

So then I recorded everything in a damn hurry, did no mixing whatsoever (all the levels are all over the shop), with lyrics that were mostly jotted down very late at night. Recorded all the vocals on Monday and Tuesday night, and rendered the whole job.

As a songwriting exercise, it was fuckin magic, I'm going to be pulling apart that material for ages now. I just should have allowed more time for recording, and dedicated time for mixing. The original plan was to leave the last week or more for recording and mixing whatever wasn't done, but I just didn't have the song structures down in time.

I will definiately spend a day or two remixing the stuff that's there soon, but the re-writing and re-recording will have to wait a few weeks.

So in summary: It's fucking awesome, everyone should do it. I'll definitely be doing it again, maybe not as a solo thing though (having people to bounce musical ideas off would be handy.)

froginasock  said about 1 year ago:

Also the people I knew who were doing NaNoWriMo had to drop out, so I totally win November.

Actionralf  said about 1 year ago:

can we hear it?

froginasock  said about 1 year ago:

Oh yeah, go nuts.

Desperately needs a decent mix, some tracks are really suffering, I'll hopefully get some mixes up there after I've recovered from Meredith.

Actionralf  said about 1 year ago:

maybe this year, you can play the secret show near the toilets...

froginasock  said about 1 year ago:

Shhh, it's not a secret if you blab about it on here.
