Superchunk

smokevswater  said about 5 years ago  or at  3:16PM on Wednesday, July 5 2006 in music

Woke up this morning with a strange compulsion to listen to these fullas for the first time in years - had a couple of tapes back in the day but I couldn't remember what albums they were (I think maybe incidental music was one?).

Went and bought 'Here's where the strings come in' and i'm crankin it now but just wondering - what are their classics? favourites?

fastcanoe  said about 5 years ago:

No Pocky for Kitty is my favorite possibly.. though the S/T album can be worth it for Slack Motherfucker alone.

josejones  said about 5 years ago:

they have some seriously good outtakes too on Cup of Sand.

michael_horse  said about 5 years ago:

just got around to watching their dvd last weekend ... good stuff

smokevswater  said about 5 years ago:

cool cheers dudes

I really like em - they have some pretty cheesey moments but is feels like a good mix of lots of other stuff/styles I like. I know 'throwing things' was one song on the old tapes I had that I really liked...

shunt  said about 5 years ago:

favs: the first part / slack mf / driveway to driveway ... can't remember what else

goingblank  said about 5 years ago:

Ahh, love this band! On The Mouth is a pretty flawless album and Cup Of Sand had some of their best tracks on it. And I've been enjoying Come Pick Me Up lately. Word on the street is they're recording a new record.

goingblank  said about 5 years ago:

Playing the Cat's Cradle on September 1st for anyone lucky enough to be around those parts. One day I'll save up enough money to fly over there and see them, that's a promise.

filterfeed  said about 5 years ago:

yeah, but they should come here!

on the mouth and foolish are my faves.

beertickle  said about 5 years ago:

randomindiekid  said about 5 years ago:

It's all good.

Come Pick Me Up has such great production - those horns!

Foolish has 'Without Blinking' which is such a bitter kiss off to Laura I'm surprised the band stayed together.

shhh  said about 5 years ago:

used to love the 'chunk as a young twenty-something

mswahili  said about 5 years ago:

Yeah I loved 'em too, up to and including 'On The Mouth' (and 'Foolish' maybe), then I kinda lost interest.

As the old band-a-minute list put it:
Superchunk - We're young and high on life. I'm excited. We're old. I'm bored.

rawk  said about 5 years ago:

supported them in '94 on the Foolish tour in NZ. They were very influenced by the Flying Nun stable. Kicked In off Foolish is pretty cool. Sounds pretty dated now tho.

Lorenzo St Dubois  said about 5 years ago:

I loved their cover of 100,000 Fireflies. My favourite LPs were/are No Pocky for Kitty and On The Mouth. Thought the first album wasn't much chop besides Slack Motherfucker. I also really like the 10" they released for the tour here. The red one. And the singles comp is killer.

hainzy  said about 5 years ago:

Im sure I saw them at the Corner. When the hell was that? Seems like eons ago. Im currently listening to Shellac. Same era methunks..

Lorenzo St Dubois  said about 5 years ago:

I saw them at Livid, December 1992.

hainzy  said about 5 years ago:

Sounds about my right. geez theres been a lot of beer since then..

hainzy  said about 5 years ago:

i mean 'sounds about right'..... Fuckin hell. think i need sleep... Brain no good beer function without

SUPERCHUNK to rock The Daily Show's 10 YR Anniversary

What started out to be a "glorified office party" for the staff of the Daily Show on Comedy Central has now morphed into a must see event. 2006 marks the 10 year anniversary of The Daily Show and to celebrate with as many people as possible plans have been unveiled for The Daily Show Presents: Ten F#@king Years (The Concert). And what better band to rock your socks off in NYC than our very own Superchunk?

This show-business extravaganza will take place on November 16th, 2006 at Irving Plaza in NYC. Superchunk will headline, and will be joined on the bill by Clem Snide, The Upper Crust and a super secret fourth band to be announced later. Also taking part will be the Daily Show's regular roster of correspondents and personalities. The show's writers will be hard at work coming up with all sorts of entertaining stuff for you, the very special paying public.

Tickets will be $30 and will go on sale September 18th via
ticketmaster and the Irving Plaza box office. All proceeds from the show will go to benefit 826 NYC, a nonprofit tutoring center in New York City.

From Merge:

"June 5th:

Superchunk - "Misfits & Mistakes"

Your eyes are not deceiving you. That's right. Superchunk is back. A brand new 7-inch single.
Why? Well, why not? A fantastic new song unavailable elsewhere, recorded specifically for the
forthcoming epic Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters. As if that weren't enough
the B-side is a version of "Misfits and Mistakes" sung by Meatwad!
You'd be surprised how much he sounds like Mac. A new Superchunk single!!
How cool is that?"

Hell yes!

COLISEUM has also announced a split 7” with SUPERCHUNK for Record Store Day 2011

This is amazing, yet kind of strange. For people that don't who Coliseum are, check them out here.

I've probably listened to ''Yeah It's Beautiful Here Too'' about twelve times in a row. Not sure how healthy this is.

MelonHCST  said about 10 months ago:

First Superchunk song I heard.
Last year.
Last night.
I'm tired.
Let's fight.

Best

LOVE this band!!! had the pelasure of seeing 'em at the corner years ago - flying nun tour perhaps? and the pleasure of seeing a few times whilst in the uk. saw this thread and got super excited, thinking oh oh oh, they're coming back to oz - YAY!!!. but no:(
favourite song - hmmm - detroit has a skyline - is striking a chord right now... but have to admit they've a hell of a lot of songs that are equally awesome. okay. end of superchunk rant;)

beertickle  said about 10 months ago:

The re-issued re-mastered Here's Where The Strings Come In come with bonus acoustic demos of a few of the songs on the album including Yeah, It's Beautiful Here Too. It's great.

I am still loving Majesty Shredding from last year, if Popfrenzy can bring out Times New Viking and Marnie Stern a tour would seem highly likely.

MelonHCST  said about 10 months ago:

They said they were working on a tour a few months ago. Meredith maybe?

goingblank  said about 2 months ago:

So, about that 2011 Australian tour then...

MelonHCST  said about 2 months ago:

:(
