I'm about to sign up for ADSL2 and have no idea what constitutes a good wireless modem/router combination these days... Whirlpool is generally no help as it's a typical 12 year old chest beating turf war.
What do all 'yall use and does it actually do what it's advertised to do?

netgear dg834g
needs a firmware upgrade to do adsl2+, but once that's done, it's sweet as
do you get good speeds? range?
adsl speeds ?? no, cause my line is shit as :(
I've got a Belkin iinet ADSL 2+ modem, and it's great, but I just got it coz they sent it to me for $170. It's got good range (2 antennas) and looks nice. Hasn't stopped working yet. But i'm just pushing what I own as i've got nothing to compare it to, so look around.
Also, the motherfucker doesn't work with my Nintendo DS. That sucks.
I'm quite happy with my Netgear DG834PN. About the only thing I'd change is to put in a GbE switch in place of the four port 10/100 one.
Wireless range is great, too. (This one has extended range, whereas the '834g that Horse suggested has the standard range.) The downside is that the '834pn costs about twice as much.
if it doesn't work with the DS then it's no good to me!
Most firewalls will allow you to create a DMZ, so you can always get stuff to work. Creating a DMZ defeats the purpose of a firewall though.
I think the problems with the Belkins & the Nintendo DS is that the DS can only accept wireless speeds at around 1 or 2mbits, whereas the Belkin transmits at 3 or higher or something, and can't scale down slow enough, so it can't establish a connection.
Oops, sorry, I though you were having firewall problems rather than wireless problems.
yeah, nah. Hence why I think Belkin suck.
Belkin are the Behringer of computer equipment.
heh, thought as much...
Bump.
My five-year old Netgear DG834GT died the death of a dead person this afternoon. Suggestions for latest hot-shit router of comparable 2006-adjusted-price and standard welcome.
They still make that netgear model except they are cheaper now.
Officeworks has them
Hmm, funny, I'm back in the same boat again. Just need a router this time though. Anybody know a router that's available in AU that works with OpenWRT? I looked up every single model sold by MSY and CPL on the OpenWRT page and all of them are either unsupported, never supportable, supported with a million hours of agonising hacking, or unknown.
Thanks for the tip, Godzilla. I am thinking I might take the hint from the universe and take the opportunity to upgrade though. The nerds on Whirlpool seem to be losing their shit over the Billion 7800N.
I have a 4yo billion at the office. It's never missed a beat. My home netgear seems to slow down and need rebooting every so often, so your probably right.
Same on Cnet. No stores stock it so it makes me kinda nervous and hppy at the same time. I came here to get a more ''normal'' person view but I guess I'll probably order the Billion. I hve to be able to get the signal next door so it will have to be a cracker but also the gigabit cable will help as a plan B...
I just picked up one of these: Netgear DGND3700
Gb uplink (for NBN), Gb ethernet, dual band.
Ha, so true.
Prolly get this one.
